HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes 1928-09-04364 ~,~n k~ETING 0F THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH FZ A CISCO, HSLD T SSDA¥, The regular meeting of the City Council ef the City of South San Francisco was held in the City Hall, Tuesday e~ening, September 4th,1928. The meeting was call,~d to order at ?;30 o'clock p.m. by Councilman A.J.Eschelbach, Mayor of South San Francisco. ROLL CALL. Roll call found all members of the council present, to-wit;- Councilmen, A.Hyndtng, R.Lloyd, E.Ninuccianf, E.Ttbbetts, A.J.Eschelbach. The minutes of the previous meeting were read. There being no errors or omissions they were approved as read. A communication was received from Mfs.hate Kaynard,905 Grand Avenue, asking the city to refrain from disturbing the sidewalk and curb in front of her property, under proceedings ~60. The clerk was instructed to answer her comm~unication stating the contract had already been let for the work and the time for filing protest had long since psat. The Fontana Food Products Company wrote t~e city asking that the course of the proposed unde~ underpass of the State Highway be changed to emerge on the east side of their property line. Councilman Hyndtng stated no work would be commenced in this district by the State Highway authorit~es for approximately a year. The clerk was instructed to answer the request stating the city would work ~.'~ ~ in conjunction with the State Highway Com~isslon and look after the interest of The Fontana Company when the work begins. The city engineer was requested to look after the matter also. An invitation was received by Eayo~ Esche!~,ach from the City of Sacramento asking that a representation be sent to Sacramento to attend the banquet of the Pacific Coast Association of Fire Chiefs. No action taken and the communication ordere~ filed. E.R.Anthoney, Superinte~dent of the Southern Pacific Company, ~ubmitted a request that the city act on his suggestiton of some weeks ago to erect stop signs on each side Of the Southern, Pacific Company's tracks at Butler Road, in the interest of public safety. The matter was laid over until a future meeting to allow for including additional stop signs in amending the ordinance. Nr. Anthoney, in a separate communication ~equested information concerning the widening ofthe pavement across the S.P.t~acks at Swift and Grand Avenues. Councilman IfJnding stated the Market ~treet kailway officials intimated the cost of moving 'their tracks in relocating would amount to between $3000 and $4000, and ~he matter still unsettled. A communication was received from The Pacific Coast Building Officials ~onference requesting %he city to send the Building Inspector to their annual convention at Fresno, October 16 to 19 inclusive. On motion regularly carried Building Inspector Brawn was appointed to attend the convention and the sum of $§0.00 allowed for expenses. The offimial Call of the League of California ~unicipalities for the 50th annual convention to be held in San Bernamdino in October was submitted %0 the council with the request that the city send as many officials to ~he convention as can con~i~ntly attend. ~ayor Eschelbach stated all city officers are welcome to attend as in ot].er years, aha further arrangements would be ~ade at a future meeting. A copy of a resolution aeop~e~ ~y %he co~ittee of thirty appoin~ee by Ers. Uinterhalter to promote the project of %he construction of a ~unicii?~al swimming pool, auditorium, children's Plag- ground, tennis courts, etc, etc, was submitted to the city council. The resolution recomm~ends that the cit~ council take steps %o call a bomd election to raise the the sum of approximately $£00,000.00 to cover the cost of the construction o~ the various items proposed to be constructed. Councilman Hynding reconn'endea that no action be taken until the next~ meeting, when plans, specifications and estimates shoula be submitted for the Council~s consideration. it was so ordered. ~ayor ~schelbach submitted a letter from the ~oard of Fire underwriters of the pacific, stating their belie~ ~at owing to the installation of the n~-' fire alarm system, hydrants, e~c. a reduction of 15~ in the insurance rates will be allowed in £outi~ San ~'rancisco, on brick~andlframe mercantiles, and 10~ in the basic rate on frame dwellings,the bo~rd having endorsed the recommendation of ~r. Jos. I.Thomas, secretary, for a reduction. Oommunication created filed. ~r. P.J.Shsw, ueneral ~anager of the South S~n ~'rancisc~3 Land & Improvement uompany, in a communication to the council, askedto be advised as to w~at action the council contemplates in the matte~ constructing sewers in the region close to the new ~re house. ~e stated several new factories are proposed for that district, some acreage already havi'£ been sold. The matter was referred to the city engineer, and the clerk instructed to so inform Er. Sh~w. An application for a soft drinl license was ~resented by F.Narker, for the S.P.Hotel, 14 Grand Avenue. Referred to the police commission. The monthly reports of the School l~urse,Buileing Inspector,Fire Chief, Chief of ~olice, and City Clerk for the month ending August Z1,19£8 were reae and accepted. ORDINANCE NO. ~ An ordinance entitled "AN OhDINANCE OF THE CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRA~CIOC0 ADOPTIEC THE LEIF0~ BUILDING CODE 1927 EDITION ADOPTED BY THE PACIFIC C0A~T BUILDING 0FFICIAL~' CONFERENCE AT THE SIXTH, ( A~:h~AL ~ZETIEG OCTOBER 1927" was imtroauced by Counc~lnmn Lloyd, bad.its first reading, and was laid o~er to come up under th~ regular order of business ~t the next regular meeting~of the Cit~ Council.' Ers. Holbrook, Ers. Spindler and l~!rs. ~d. Kauffm~nn of the Women's Club, appe&red before the ..... council and asked to be ~ermitted ~o donate the sum of ~100 toward the purchase of a suitable memorial piece to the late Ers. Eartin, and asked ~he council t~ indicate what sort of piece would be preferred. The council's answer wil~ be given by the first Thursday in October. Ben Hjerpe suggested the c~ptured field cannon might be place~ in the civic center. No action' taken~ on account of the delapidatee condition of the relics.
