CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION MEETING

I. CALL TO ORDER: 6:30 p.m.
II. ROLL CALL:
Present: Commissioners Looper, Madrid-Nickle, Gekker, Ventura,
Boldenweck, Pettinari, Hobson-Coard, and Woo
Absent: Commissioners Moncé
Staff Present: Sharon Ranals, Director of Park and Recreation
Ercie Santos, Cultural Arts Specialist
Marie Patea, Administrative Assistant
III. AGENDA REVIEW:
No changes.
IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Minutes from May 18, 2017, were approved as written.
Motion by Commissioner Gekker/Boldenweck; unanimous.
- Note that Commissioner Madrid-Nickle arrived at 7:20 p.m.
V. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION:
Jack Drago award recipients, Bianca Joy Catolos from El Camino High School and Sean
Michael Reyes of South San Francisco High School, received certificates and took
photos with Vice Chair, PaulaClaudine Hobson-Coard. They had received their $750
awards prior to the meeting and thanked the Commission for their support.

None
VII. SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS:
1. Sculpture
Commissioner Looper reported that thirty sculpture entries were received and the
subcommittee has narrowed down the list to four for the Commission’s review.

a. Popsicles and Orange Slices (9’ tall)
- Possibly for Bay Trail. Made of concrete stucco. Will need to be repainted as
needed.
b. Windswept (10’ tall)
- Possibly for Maple/Grand at City Hall. Made of alloy-aluminum.
c. Full Sails
- Brushed stainless steel. Maintenance required every few years. No suggested
location for this piece.
Other discussions included local artist options, exact location on the Bay Trail,
research of the artist and the maintenance of the pieces, and to gather feedback from
other communities that hosted art pieces from these artists.
Vice-Chair Hobson-Coard requested to table the discussion until the next meeting.
2. General Art Show (July 14 & 15)
Specialist Santos circulated a docent list and confirmed that Guy Magellanes agreed
to jury the show.
3. Quilt Show (October 13 & 14)
Commissioner Boldenweck spoke with ex-Commissioner Rena Donati and received
confirmation that she and other quilters are ready for the show and have vintage
pieces to showcase.
4. Fundraiser (August 27)
Specialist Santos distributed ten (10) tickets to each Commissioner to sell. Tickets
can be purchased on-line, Recreation office, Corporation Yard, and at the event.
Event flyers were also circulated and Commissioners were encouraged to post them.
5. Collaboration with P&R Commission
Commissioner Woo announced that hula dancing, and lei making were in the
planning process and may occur prior to movie night on July 21. The movie is
Moana and based in Hawaii.
6. Performing Arts
Commissioner Ventura reported that she and Vice-Chair Hobson-Coard met and
discussed Jazz standards with seniors, karaoke night, and Jam night as possible
performing art opportunities. Keeping with a theme of simply classy! Raffle tickets
could be sold with prizes based on an “enter to win” program. If someone sings,
they are entered to win a prize. Sub-committee is proposing to host an event in
spring 2018 and will check with staff on available locations. Locations discussed
were Municipal Services Building Social Hall and Council Chambers. A discussion
about a family friendly event prior to an adult only event occurred.

VIII. NEW BUSINESS:
1. Selection of Dragon Name
Each Commissioner voted on their favorite dragon name for the sculpture on West
Orange Avenue and Westborough Boulevard. The winner is Yomu with 50% of the
votes. Director Ranals stated that she will invite the person who submitted the name
to a Commission meeting. A plaque will be drafted with details about the name in
English and Japanese.
Commissioner Woo made a motion to approve Yomu with a second by
Commissioner Gekker; unanimous.
IX. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION:
Commissioner Looper stated that SSF was represented well at the San Mateo County
Fair. Ballet Folklorico performed and it was listed in the program as SSF P&R.
Vice-Chair Hobson-Coard reported that her band’s performance at the Fair was good
with a lot of people in attendance and good weather. She received an honorable mention
for one of her art submissions. She invited the Commission to hear her band at the Surf
Spot in Pacifica and in Japan town on August 6.
X. ITEMS FROM STAFF
Specialist Santos met with the SSFUSD liaison and discussed March 23-24, 2018 as a
possible Youth Art Show date.
