Thursday, May 18, 2017, at 6:30 p.m.
Municipal Services Building – Betty Weber Room

I. CALL TO ORDER: 6:30 p.m.
II. ROLL CALL:
Present: Commissioners Moncé, Gekker, Ventura, Boldenweck, Pettinari
and Hobson-Coard
Absent: Commissioners Looper, Woo and Madrid-Nickle
Staff Present: Sharon Ranals, Director of Park and Recreation
Ercie Santos, Cultural Arts Specialist
Marie Patea, Administrative Assistant
III. AGENDA REVIEW:
No changes.
IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Minutes from April 20, 2017, were approved as written.
Please note that Commissioner Gekker arrived at 6:32pm after roll call.
V. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION:
None.
VI. OLD BUSINESS:
None
VII. SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS:
1. Sculpture
Commissioner Looper reported that seventeen artists have submitted sculpture
entries and several artists have multiple entries.
2. Youth Art Scholarship

Chair Moncé presented the Jack Drago Youth Scholarship to Sean Michael Reyes at
SSFHS and Vice-Chair Hobson-Coard presented it to Bianca Joy Catolos at ECHS;
noting that a lot of students were in attendance. Each recipient received $750.
3. General Art Show (July 14 & 15)
Vice-Chair Hobson-Coard circulated the docent list and event flyer hard copies. She
reported that artist, Guy Magellanes, agreed to jury the show.
4. Fundraiser (August 27)
Chair Moncé circulated a task sign-up sheet for the barbeque fundraiser. Some of
the tasks suggested were as follows: food, dessert, beverages, auction (solicit &
organize), ticket sales, shopping, decorations, and entertainment.
5. Collaboration with P&R Commission
Commissioner Pettinari noted that an arts and crafts table was at Streets Alive / Parks
Alive and was well attended. She also mentioned that the drummers were fantastic.
No collaboration activities were discussed.
6. Performing Arts
Vice-Chair Hobson-Coard reported that the sub-committee met and a couple ideas
discussed were JAM night with musicians and Karaoke night. The venues discussed
were Council Chambers and Fernekes Building. Donated items for an Enter to win
contest with a donation box for appetizers were a couple fundraising suggestions.
VIII. NEW BUSINESS:
1. Cancellation of Summer Meeting
Commissioner Gekker made a motion to cancel the July 20, 2017, meeting.
Commissioner Boldenweck seconded the motion. A roll call vote was taken and it
was unanimous.
IX. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION:
Vice-Chair Hobson-Coard invited the Commission and Staff to the San Mateo
County Fair on Tuesday, June 13, to see her Band Perform on the Coors Stage from
3:30pm – 4:30pm. The band’s name is Love Struck. She has also submitted
artwork.

Commissioner Gekker inquired about the Dragon naming contest. Director Ranals
reported that names will be brought to the June meeting for the Commission to vote
on.
Commissioner Pettinari requested to have the green irrigation box painted dark green
on the corner of Hickey and Junipero Serra. She noted that she loves the tree!
X. ITEMS FROM STAFF
Specialist Santos asked the Commission if they were interested in hosting a table at
the Farmers’ Market. Commissioner Gekker suggested teaming up with another
commission.
Director Ranals provided an update on Evohelix after speaking to art conservator on
the restoration of Evohelix. The four methods/options discussed were as follows:
1. chemical (full day labor – annual process)
2. electric current (detours corrosion)
3. mechanical method (grind and repair / multiple attempts)
4. do nothing (change expectation).
Evohelix is 304 stainless and is not for marine environment. Millennium
Sculpture is high polished steel which is why it remains shiny.
Director Ranals will narrow down cost estimates for future discussion.
