I. CALL TO ORDER: 6:30 p.m.
II. ROLL CALL:
Present: Commissioners Boldenweck, Gekker, Ventura, Hobson-Coard,
Looper, Madrid Nickle, Pettinari, Moncé and Woo
Absent: None
Staff Present: Sharon Ranals, Director of Park and Recreation

III. AGENDA REVIEW:
No changes.
IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Chair Woo approved the minutes of November 17, 2016; as presented.
V. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION:
Garina, art student, observed the meeting.
VI. OLD BUSINESS:
1. 2017 Questionnaire Results
Goals were reviewed and Commissioner Boldenweck suggested a Day of the Dead sugar
skull workshop; either through Parks and Recreation or as a Cultural Arts event.
Commissioner Gekker suggested pairing the skull workshop with an exhibit.
Commissioner Madrid Nickle has a friend who specializes in sugar skulls and face
painting. Consider collaborating with the Farmers’ Market and planning with the Parks
and Recreation brochure deadlines.
Commissioner Hobson-Coard shared an idea of a music event. This would be a
fundraiser to help music programs in schools and support local talent. Ideas discussed

were as follows: hosting a music event before Movie in the Park, in Council Chambers,
multicultural event with food trucks and incorporating local businesses.
Art and wine paint night was discussed; noting that the Town of Colma charges $30 for
residents. Consider hosting a class through Parks and Recreation.
Commissioner Madrid Nickle suggested a classic car event. She suggested a car
invitational incorporated with an existing Cultural Arts Exhibit. The cars may draw
attention from passersby thus bringing more attendees to the art exhibit. She also noted
that a non-docent art show allowing artists to exhibit for a longer period of time may be
appealing to artists and spectators.
The Commission decided to add a Performing Arts Committee and C ommissioner
Hobson-Coard will chair the committee and the members will be Commissioners
Ventura, Moncé, and Madrid Nickle. Commissioner Ventura noted that she has written
a play with a theme of celebrating Christmas in various cultures. Other performing art
ideas discussed were a film festival and bands.
VII. SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS:
1. Sculpture
Commissioner Looper had nothing to report.
2. Utility Box Mural Program
Commissioner Pettinari reported that the utility box mural program is complete for
now. The final two murals are on Mission Road at Evergreen and Grand Avenue at
Magnolia Avenue.
3. Youth Art Scholarship
Commissioner Looper made a motion to change the Youth Art Scholarship verbiage
of the scholarship to, “a total prize award of $1,500 and each recipient will receive
an equal share, with the potential of three winners.” She requested that Specialist
Santos words it as needed for the application. Commissioner Boldenweck seconded
the motion and it was accepted unanimously; with a roll call vote.
4. Photography Show (February 10 & 11)
Commissioner Hobson-Coard reported that Scott Buschmann will judge the show.
Utility Box Mural Program artists were invited and will receive certificates on
February 10. A docent list was circulated.

Meeting scheduled with SSFUSD next week to discuss show details.
VIII. NEW BUSINESS:
1. Election of Officers
Commissioner Boldenweck nominated Vice-Chair Moncé as Chair and she accepted.
Vice-Chair Moncé nominated Commissioner Hobson-Coard as Vice-Chair and she
accepted. A roll call vote was taken and unanimously approved.
IX. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION:
1. Commissioner Pettinari stated that she loves the cranes on Hickey and Junipero Serra
Boulevards.
X. ITEMS FROM STAFF
1. Manager Haimovitch reported that the utility box at Francisco Terrace Park was tagged
with graffiti. The graffiti was removed by Parks staff but art touch up is needed. Vice-
Chair Hobson-Coard said that she will touch it up as soon as possible.
2. Director Ranals thanked Commissioner Woo for her extra efforts as the Commission
Chair in 2016. A brick has been installed in her honor in Centennial Plaza as a thank
you! Commissioner Woo thanked staff and the Commission!
3. Specialist Santos highlighted the Boys and Girls Club Showcase on January 20, from
5pm – 6:30pm at the West Orange Avenue Club House location.
4. Rotary Club Mardi Gras event is February 24, and proceeds go to Cultural Arts
Commission if noted when purchasing a ticket.
