CALL TO ORDER: 6:30 p.m. II. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Moncé, Gekker, Ventura, Boldenweck, Hobson- Coard, Looper, and Woo Absent: Commissioner Pettinari, and Madrid-Nickle Staff Present: Sharon Ranals, Director of Park and Recreation Samantha Haimovitch, Parks Manager Ercie Santos, Cultural Arts Specialist Marie Patea, Administrative Assistant III. AGENDA REVIEW: Request to move Caltrain Station Improvement update before Sub-Committee Reports on the agenda. IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes from March 16, 2017, were approved as written. V. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION: Eddie Flores and Rich Holt, Parks and Recreation Commissioners attended the meeting. VI. OLD BUSINESS: None VII. SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS: 1. Sculpture Commissioner Looper invited Commissioners to check the City website for the call for entries information and to encourage others to submit entries. She reported that we have had some inquiries. Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of April 20, 2017 Page 2 2. Youth Art Scholarship Commissioner Woo reported that six entries were received. Three entries from El Camino and three from South San Francisco High School were received. The sub- committee and Commissioners reviewed the entries. Commissioner Woo made a motion to approve Sean Michael Reyes’ entry from SSFHS with a second from Commissioner Looper. Commissioner Woo then made a motion to approve Biancha Joy Catolos’ entry from ECHS with a second from Commissioner Gekker. Both motions were unanimously approved with a roll call vote. Vice-Chair Hobson-Coard will be presenting $750 to Biancha on May 16, at the El Camino High awards night. Chair Moncé will present $750 to Sean on May 9, at the South City High awards night. The scholarship recipients will be invited to an upcoming City Council Meeting to be acknowledged with a commendation. 3. Youth Art Show (March 31 & April 1) Commissioner Woo reported that the show was a great success. She thanked Specialist Santos for all of her work on the show. Over 530 art pieces were exhibited. Over 400 guests attended with three performing arts performances. Chair Moncé was a great master of ceremony for the performances. She noted that Commissioner Ventura decorated the sign in table beautifully. SSFUSD hosted an art table and the Library had an information “pop up” table. An extended exhibit is on display at City Hall in the Municipal Services Building. 4. Fundraiser (August 27) Chair Moncé asked the Commissioners to think about tasks that they are interested in leading to support the fundraiser. Some of the tasks suggested were as follows: food, dessert, beverages, auction (solicit & organize), ticket sales, shopping, decorations, and entertainment. A sign-up sheet will be circulated at the May meeting. 5. Collaboration with P&R Commission Commissioner Woo had nothing to report. 6. Performing Arts Vice-Chair Hobson-Coard reported that work is in progress and developing. 7. Art Tiles Program Manager, Haimovitch reported the Alta Loma Park construction project is in place and should take about four months to complete. Project completion is planned for fall 2017, which includes the art tile seatwall project. Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of April 20, 2017 Page 3 VIII. NEW BUSINESS: 1. Caltrain Station Improvement Project Update Tony Rozzi, Senior Planner presented colored handouts of preliminary improvement designs and materials. He welcomed feedback from the Commissioners on station aesthetics and art. He noted that the original design was from 2008, and was based on function. He is striving to now create a comfortable pedestrian experience. The goal is to present to City Council in May. Discussions included the following: color scheme, Prometheus mural (will stay), gate, closed circuit television in the tunnel and parking lot, art on the walls, sustainability, paving, grading, art with tile pavers, furnishings, lighting, bike repair, lockers, security, PA system, music, community partners, and transportation partners. Next week Tony will gather input from downtown merchants. This is a 3-Phase Project with an end date of December 2019. There is currently no funding for art opportunities and it is a $60,000,000 project. IX. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION: Commissioner Looper inquired about the Evohelix sculpture on Spruce Avenue rusting. She requested that staff get quotes on removing the rust and coating it. Commissioner Boldenweck suggested relocating the sculpture indoors. Commissioner Boldenweck requested a light, if possible, on the crane sculptures to illuminate them at night. Commissioner Gekker requested a plaque on the corner of Westborough and W. Orange celebrating the temporary art piece brought to you by SSF Cultural Arts Commission. Vice-Chair Hobson-Coard mentioned that the San Mateo County Fair deadline for art submission applications is May 9. X. ITEMS FROM STAFF Specialist Santos asked the Commission if they were interested in hosting a table at the Farmers’ Market on May 6, during Streets Alive/Parks Alive event. The Commission declined. She also mentioned the on-line parks grant opportunity for $20,000 that ends in April and encouraged voting! Specialist Santos reported receipt of a letter from Shawnterra Moore, Superintendent of SSFUSD thanking the Commission for the utility box honorarium. She also mentioned the Art Fair at Fort Mason by KQED. Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of April 20, 2017 Page 4 Parks Manager, Haimovitch reported that the landscape project at Hickey and Junipero Serra Boulevard is complete with blue pebbles in the pond. She also reported that the six tons of boulders were installed at the corner of West Orange and Westborough Boulevard and that the dragon will be installed soon. A row of pacific waxed myrtle was planted to provide a nice backdrop for the sculpture. Specialist Santos offered to post information on the website about the sculpture. A dragon naming contest was mentioned by Commissioner Gekker. Director Ranals reported that this is Samantha Haimovitch’s last meeting since she has accepted a job with the County of Marin as a superintendent. She thanked Samantha for all of the fabulous projects that she has helped with. Vice-Chair Hobson-Coard thanked Haimovitch and stated that her mom said nice things about Samantha after meeting her just one time. Manager Haimovitch invited the Commission to a SSF Earth Day event on April 21, at 11am. The event will kick off at the Eucalyptus Shelter in Orange Park. XI. CORRESPONDECE: Posted XII.
