CALL TO ORDER: 6:30 p.m. II. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners Looper, Gekker, Ventura, Boldenweck, Pettinari, and Hobson-Coard Absent: Commissioners Madrid-Nickle and Woo Staff Present: Sharon Ranals, Director of Park and Recreation Ercie Santos, Cultural Arts Specialist Marie Patea, Administrative Assistant III. AGENDA REVIEW: No changes. IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes from June 15, 2017, stand as written. - Note that Commissioner Gekker arrived at 6:33 pm and Commissioner Ventura arrived at 7:02 pm. V. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION: VI. PRESENTATIONS: a. Xavi Camacho and his parents, Hector and Kristy, were present and Chair Moncé gave Xavi an autographed dragon book and took photos. b. General Art Show finalists were recognized with signed certificates and keepsake photos were taken with Chair Moncé. The following artists were present: Indiana Carcamo, Shirley Edwards, Bobbie Kahan, Lisa Rego, Allen Sinor, Tony Baran, Mary Ciofalo, and Arceli Santos. VII. OLD BUSINESS: None Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of August 17, 2017 Page 2 VIII. SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS: 1. Sculpture a. Dragon plaque wording draft was reviewed and Commissioner Gekker made a motion to table the action for the September meeting. It was seconded by Commissioner Boldenweck; unanimous. Drafts attached. b. Sculpture purchases were discussed. Commissioner Looper noted that locations and maintenance of sculptures are in question. Director Ranals reported that she spoke to all three artists and they proved that the sculptures are suitable for outdoor public installation. As a reminder, these are the sculptures being discussed: 1. Popsicles and Orange Slices (9’ tall) - Made of concrete stucco. Will need to be repainted as needed and are graffiti coated. 2. Windswept (10’ tall) - A contemporary piece made of alloy-aluminum. 3. Full Sails - Brushed stainless steel. Maintenance required every few years. Commissioner Looper will review possible locations with the subcommittee and report at a future meeting, noting that a more visible location is desired. 2. General Art Show (July 14 & 15) Vice Chair Hobson-Coard reported that she received great feedback on the show. She stated that we had 64 exhibits, 28 artists, 1 piece sold, 15 awards in 5 categories, 3 best of show awards and 13 pieces chosen for the extended exhibit in the atrium window. She thanked Guy Magallanes for being the show judge and Specialist Santos for all of her work. 3. Quilt Show (October 13 & 14) Commissioner Boldenweck reported that ex-Commissioner Rena Donati is all set for the show and kindly dropped off a basket for the barbeque fundraiser silent auction. 4. Fundraiser (August 27) Commissioner Ventura reported that she has one person planning to sing at the end of the fundraiser. This will entertain the guests while the committee gathers and calculates the auction winners. 5. Collaboration with P&R Commission Specialist Santos reported on behalf of Commissioner Woo that the July 21, Moana Movie in the Park collaboration was a great success. Polynesian dance class Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of August 17, 2017 Page 3 performed and set the tone for the movie. Little roosters were created with the help of Commissioners Boldenweck and Ventura and Helen Fong. September 9, is the Chili Cook off hosted by Friends of Parks and Recreation. Please support if possible. September 23, is Concert in the Park and Friends of Parks and Recreation will be hosting the beer and wine booth. Commissioners Gekker, and Boldenweck offered to volunteer. October 21, is Halloween Extravaganza from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Commissioner Boldenweck will look into prepping materials for a witch hat project. 6. Performing Arts Vice Chair Hobson-Coard reported that a karaoke event is being discussed by the subcommittee. In order to attract families and adults, the event may begin with kid friendly karaoke and end with adult only karaoke with adult beverages. IX. NEW BUSINESS: 1. The following dates for the 2018 Art Show Schedule were discussed: February 9-10 Photography exhibit March 23-24 Youth Art Show May 11-12 Karaoke (Performing Arts) Commissioner Looper made a motion to approve the photography exhibit on February 9-10, and May 11-12, for a performing arts event. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Gekker; unanimous. The final show is to be decided pending feedback from the commissioners that were not present. Chair Moncé requested this be agendized for the next meeting. X. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION: Commissioner Looper stated that ex-Commissioner Ron Burgess has a few paintings available for purchase. She will bring photos to the next meeting or perhaps the actual paintings can be brought to the meeting for review. The value of the pieces is $1,500 each and he is offering them to the Commission for $700 each. Vice-Chair Hobson-Coard reported that her band is performing at the Beach Chalet on August 20, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm and all are welcome. XI. ITEMS FROM STAFF Specialist Santos distributed information about Commissioner Ventura’s December musical. Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of August 17, 2017 Page 4 Social media for South San Francisco was discussed. Twitter #SSFParkandRec. Facebook SSFParks, and Instagram is SSFParks&Rec. Commissioner Gekker suggested posting all events on South San Francisco Facebook. XII. CORRESPONDECE: Posted XIII. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Moncé adjourned the meeting at 7:44 pm.
