MINUTES OF THE
CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION MEETING
CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO
Thursday, September 21, at 6:30 p.m.

I. CALL TO ORDER: 6:30 p.m.
II. ROLL CALL:
Present: Commissioners Moncé, Looper, Madrid-Nickle, Woo, Ventura,
Boldenweck, Pettinari, and Hobson-Coard
Absent: Commissioner Gekker
Staff Present: Sharon Ranals, Director of Parks and Recreation

III. AGENDA REVIEW:
Director Ranals asked to move VIII New Business, Ron Burgess, painting proposal
after Citizen Participation.
IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Minutes from August 17, 2017, stand as written.
V. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION:
Item VIII. New Business
1. Ron Burgess Painting Proposal
Former South San Francisco Cultural Arts Commissioner, Ron Burgess, introduced
himself and his wife Elizabeth Fricke. Due to health reasons he has to close his
studio and sell his artwork adding that the Peninsula Museum of Art selected seven
of his paintings for their collection. He displayed two large paintings, titled
Harmony and Chaos, and proposed the Commission consider purchasing them. The
pair is titled Conflict if hung together. He answered questions related to his process
and inspiration. Commissioners continued discussion on his proposal later in the
meeting.

VI. OLD BUSINESS:
1. Selection of Final 2018 Art Gallery Show
There was discussion as to what media would be exhibited for the October 12, and
13, 2018, art show. General art was suggested as an option. Commissioner Looper
reported that the floral design members were also interested in exhibiting their work
in October. Specialist Santos requested a determination be made by October or
November. It will be placed on the agenda for the next meeting.
VII. SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS:
1. Sculpture
a. After discussion, the Dragon plaque sample with less text was chosen. Chair Moncé
made a motion to approve the selection of this sample. It was seconded by
Commissioner Boldenweck; unanimous.
b. Commissioner Looper suggested that the Commission come to a consensus on the
three sculptures recommended by the subcommittee. The three sculptures selected
for purchase are “Popsicles,” “Slices of Heaven,” and “Windswept” with the
alternate sculpture being “Full Sails.” Possible locations were discussed including
the Terrabay Fire Station lawn or Paradise Valley Park for “Windswept” and the
Bay Trail or Antoinette & Chestnut for “Popsicles” and “Slices of Heaven.”
Commissioner Woo also suggested rotating pieces in different locations.
Commissioner Woo made a motion to purchase the three sculptures. Commissioner
Pettinari seconded the motion and it was unanimous.
2. Quilt Show (October 13 & 14)
Commissioner Boldenweck stated that the quilters installed the atrium window
display and it looked great. She distributed the docent sign up list for the event and
asked that all the commissioners volunteer. She stated two people needed to be
present at all times.
3. Fundraiser ( BBQ August 27)
Chair Moncè gave a brief overview of the event. They had 73 attendees and 41
auction items. She thanked Commissioner Ventura for her group’s performance.
The total they collected from ticket sales and auction items was $2,865.18.
Specialist Santos asked if they wanted to choose a date for next year’s fundraiser.
The available dates were August 19 and August 26. Following discussion, the date
selected was August 26.

4. Event Collaboration with P&R Commission
Commissioner Woo reported that Commissioners Boldenweck, Gekker, Ventura and
she would be helping out at the Friends of Park and Recreation booth at Concert in
the Park. She also informed the Commission that they would host a crafts table at
the Halloween Extravaganza, which runs from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., on October
21. Their crafts table would consist of decorating pirate-themed felt eye patches and
coloring sheets for the children. Commissioner Ventura invited the Commission to
set up a table at her December 2 event, “Christmas in my Hometown,” to promote
the work of the Cultural Arts Commission.
5. Performing Arts
Chair Hobson-Coard reported that the subcommittee is developing ideas for the May
2018 Karaoke Night including using props, and inviting a celebrity or
councilmember to judge. As discussion progressed, it was agreed that presenting the
Karaoke event combined with the General Art Show was an excellent opportunity to
increase audience participation and add variety to an established show.
VIII. NEW BUSINESS:
1. Ron Burgess Painting Proposal
Commissioner Looper recommended purchasing the two pieces, Harmony and
Chaos, because of their artistic merit. She added that Ron Burgess is a local artist,
long-time resident and served as a Cultural Arts Commissioner. She stated that she
would like to see the paintings displayed in a public building. The price quoted for
the pair was $1,400. After discussion, Commissioner Looper made a motion to
approve the purchase of the art pieces. Vice Chair Hobson-Coard seconded the
motion and it was accepted unanimously. Director Ranals stated she would present
the recommendation to City Council for final approval.
IX. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION:
Commissioner Looper stated that the Commission should consider smaller sculpture
installations in playgrounds.
Vice-Chair Hobson-Coard reported that she will have a one woman art exhibit of 25
pieces of art at the Redwood City, City Hall, from October 31, to January 8. Her show
is titled Tropical Breeze.

Commissioner Boldenweck asked if anyone had a few photos of 2017 Cultural Arts
events. If so, she asked that they be forwarded to Specialist Santos for inclusion in the
scrapbook.
X. ITEMS FROM STAFF
Director Ranals reported that she attended the League of Cities Conference. She
informed the commission that Councilmember Garbarino was elected President of the
League of Cities. She also reported that at the event she met an art restoration and
metallurgy professional. She spoke with him about the Evohelix discoloration. He
subsequently had the opportunity to test a small discreet section of the sculpture with a
restorative solution and it worked. He was currently out of the country, but when he
returns she will obtain a repair quote from him.
Specialist Santos informed the Commission that there was a free, two-part Public Art
Workshop Event at the Burlingame Recreation Center on September 26, and October
24. She also mentioned that Napa is holding an open studio the upcoming weekend and
passed around an exhibitor’s program. Specialist Santos stated that she had parking
passes for Commissioners who were helping out at Concert in the Park.
A continued Item from Commission occurred as follows:
Commissioner Looper noted that the December meetings were usually cancelled. She
asked if commissioners wanted to cancel the 2017 December meeting. Commissioner
Moncè made a motion to cancel the December meeting. Commissioner Looper
seconded the motion; unanimous.
