I. CALL TO ORDER: 6:30 p.m.
II. ROLL CALL:
Present: Commissioners Moncé, Looper, Madrid-Nickle, Gekker, Woo,
Ventura, and Hobson-Coard
Absent: Commissioner Pettinari
Staff Present: Sharon Ranals, Director of Parks and Recreation
Susan Filereto, Administrative Assistant

IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Minutes from October 19, 2017, stand as written.
Please note that Commissioner Gekker arrived at 6:35 p.m. and Commissioner Woo
arrived at 6:40 p.m. after roll call.
V. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION:
None
VI. OLD BUSINESS:
1. Commission Atrium Window Exhibit (January 2018)
Director Ranals reported that Specialist Santos would not be at the meeting because her
mom was in the hospital so she would report on the atrium window exhibit. She stated
that Specialist Santos had informed her that everything was set and that as of right now
Vice Chair Hobson-Coard would be donating her art to display in the window as well as
Chair Moncé. Commissioner Madrid-Nickle also stated she would be participating.
Director Ranals stated they might want to consider a theme.
VII. SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS:
1. Sculpture
Commissioner Looper had no new update.

Director Ranals reported that the sculpture pieces, Popisles, Orange Slices and
Windswept are still available and that the artists stated that the pieces the Commission
will purchase will be new. Director Ranals also stated that she tried to negotiate a better
price, but that the artists would not consider it. She also informed the Commission that
the locations chosen should be visible and on city owned properties.
2. Photography Show ( February 9 & 10, 2018))
Vice Chair Hobson-Coard had nothing to report at this time.
3. Youth Art Show (March 23 & 24, 2018)
Director Ranals reported on the Youth Art Show since Commissioner Woo had not yet
arrived. She stated that Supervisor Erin O’Brien attended the South San Francisco
Advisory Meeting in Specialist Santos absence. Supervisor O’Brien reported that
everything was moving along very well.
4. Event Collaboration with P&R Commission
Commissioner Woo reported that their art table at the Halloween Extravaganza went very
well. She thanked Commissioner Ventura for helping out.
5. Performing Arts (Karaoke – May 2018)
Vice Chair Hobson-Coard had nothing to report at the time. Director Ranals asked for
confirmation of the date and details of the event so that it could be included in the Spring
Activity Guide. Vice Chair Hobson-Coard confirmed the date of May 11, 2018 and that
the Karoake Night was being combined with the General Art Show. She stated details
were still being discussed.
VIII. NEW BUSINESS:
1. 2018 Goals Questionnaire
Director Ranals distributed the 2018 Goals Questionnaire and asked Commissioners to
return it back to Specialist Santos by January 4. She also requested that the 2019 Youth
Art Show date be confirmed as soon as possible so that the venue can be secured.
IX. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION:
Vice-Chair Hobson-Coard invited Commission to her show which is titled Tropical
Breeze. The hours of the exhibit are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and
the admission is free.
Commissioner Ventura reminded and invited the Commission to her show Christmas In
My Hometown on Saturday, December 2, starting at 6:30 p.m. It will be held at South
San Francisco High School Auditorium. She stated she hopes to see everyone there.
Commissioner Boldenweck had a concern regarding why we received a payment from
the Greenhouse Quilters. Director Ranals stated that this has been the policy for years.
She explained that the quilters have a boutique and sell raffle tickets at this event and that
the Commission gets five percent of what they sell. The Greenhouse Quilters also make
a donation because they are appreciative of being able to have this event.

X. ITEMS FROM STAFF:
Director Ranals highlighted the Nutcracker Ballet happening on Saturday, December 16
and Sunday December 17. She stated that there will be two shows on Saturday. There
will be a 1:00 p.m. performance and a 7:00 p.m. performance. On Sunday, December 17
there will be a 1:00 p.m. performance only. The price of the tickets is $8.00 for adults and
$6.00 for children. She stated Commissioners are entitled to two complimentary tickets.
Director Ranals also highlighted the Wreath Workshop that will be held on Sunday
December 3. There are two sessions. There is a morning session from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00
p.m. and an afternoon session from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. It will be held at the Joseph
Fernekes Recreation Building.
A continued Item from Commission occurred as follows:
Commissioner Madrid Nickle made a suggestion of having a face painting table
at Commissioner Ventura’s musical performance Christmas in My Hometown.
She stated that this could be a good fundraising event. She also stated that they would
need at least three Commissioners to staff the table.
