AN ORDINANCE REGULATING THE SPEED OF AUTOMOBILES AND OTHER
MOTOR VEHICLES PROPELLED BY STEAM, ELECTRICITY, GASOLINE OR, OTHER
SOURCE OF ENERGY, AND PROVIDING FOP THE EQUIPMENT THEREOF WITH
BRAKES AND SIGNALS AND REQUIRING THE SAME TO BE PROVIDED WITH
LAMPS OR LIGHTS, AND REGULATING THE DRIVING OR USE THEREOF UPON ALL
STREETS, ROADS AND THOROUGHFARES WITHIN THE LIMITS OF THE
CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO.

The Board of Trustees of the City Of South San
Francisco do ordain as follows
Section 1.
No person shall be allowed to drive any automobile
or other motor vehicle propelled by steam, electricity, gasoline,
or other source of energy, within the limits of the City of South
San Francisco, save in accordance with the provisions of this
ordinance.
Section 2.
No person shall drive or run an automobile or other
motor vehicle on any street, road or thoroughfare within the
limits of the City of South San Francisco at a greater rate of
speed than I__Q0 miles per hour.
Section 3.
Every Person driving an automobile or other motor
vehicle within the limits of the City of South San Francisco, on
arriving within five hundred (500) feet of any vehicle propelled
by animal power, or of any person leading or driving domestic
animals shall slow down to a speed not exceeding six (6) miles
per hour, and shall take the right hand side of the center of the
road or street, and shall not increase such speed until said
vehicle or animals shall have been passed, and every person
driving an automobile or other motor vehicle, shall at request
or signal by putting up the hand or by any other means of
notification by a person riding or driving a restive horse or
horses, or leading or driving domestic animals, cause the automobile
or other motor vehicle to immediately take the right hand side
of the center of the road or street, stop and remain stationary,
so long as it may be necessary to allow said horses or domestic
animals to pass or get out of the way.
Section 4.
Every automobile or other motor vehicle shall be
provided with good and sufficient brakes, and shall also be provided
with a suitable bell, horn or other signal, and every automobile
or other motor vehicle shall, while being propelled or run within
the limits of the City Of South San Francisco,, have exhibited
during the period from one hour after sunset to one hour before
sunrise, one lamp in front of said vehicle, or a lamp on each side,
these showing white lights visible within a reasonable distance in
the direction in which the automobile or other vehicle is proceeding,
also one red light in rear at night.
Section 5.
Any person violating the provisions of this ordinance
shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and shall be punished by
a fine not exceeding FIFTY ($50.00) Dollars, and a person adjudged
guilty under this ordinance shall be imprisoned until such fine is
paid, not exceeding one day for each two (2) Dollars of the amount of
the fine.
Section 6.
This ordinance shall be published once in
"THE ENTERPRISE", a weekly newspaper printed and published in
the City of South San Francisco and shall take effect and be in
force from and after its passage.
Introduced, the 9th, day of November, 1908.
PASSED AND ADOPTED as an ordinance of the City of
South San Francisco at a regular meeting of the Board of Trustees
of the Cit of South San Francisco, this 16th day of November,
1908, by the following vote:
Ayes and in favor of the passage of said ordinance;
Trustees Harry Edwards. Herman Geardes.
Thomas Hickey. Andrew Hynding. Dan McSweeney
