Director Ranals reported that she had been in contact with sculptor Patricia Vader,
creator of the “Flying Fish,” who commented that the sculpture was so eroded that it
cannot be repaired. Commissioner Looper asked if it could be remade. Director Ranals
stated the South San Francisco environment is very hard on sculptures After more
discussion, it was decided that Director Ranals would contact the artist on the cost of
replacing the sculpture.
2. Utility Box Mural Program
Specialist Santos reported she has reached out to Kelly Moore Paint requesting a
donation. After several inquiries, she made contact with a new manager. A letter of
request was sent and she is waiting for a response. There was a discussion regarding the
utility box at South Airport and Baden. The mural does not look appropriate near the
newly-constructed building. Director Ranals indicated that it was staff’s understanding
that this electrical box would be removed and the wiring would be placed underground.
She will check with ECD for more information.

May 10 and 11, and October 11 and 12 will feature a General Art, Sculpture and Dance

be consistent. Everyone was okay with this. It was agreed that staff should receive emails
and then share and forward to Commissioners.
Commissioner Woo also asked when there are combined meetings regarding the Civic
Campus with Park and Recreation Commission if they could be given more time to speak.
Director Ranals responded that combining meetings gives everybody the chance to receive
updated information at the same time. She also mentioned that staff can not represent the
community that is why it is important for Commissioners to attend and voice their ideas
and concerns.
There was a discussion on how the Civic Campus meetings are not always at convenient
times for the Commissioners to attend.
Commissioner Woo thanked Director Ranals and her staff for all their hard work on the
Civic Campus planning.
X. ITEMS FROM STAFF:
Specialist Santos reported she attended the Sales Force Transit Building opening. She
distributed photos of the beautiful, temporary art murals that were at ground level where
the retail space is located.
Director Ranals reported that she and Specialist Santos went to the North Towers on
Airport Boulevard to look at a location where public art could be displayed. Director
Ranals stated the location suggested for art displays is a long white corridor. There was a
discussion about possibly hanging South San Francisco Historical Society pictures or 2
dimensional art or possibly hosting a show at the location. Art displays could be left for
