CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION MEETING
CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO

I. CALL TO ORDER: 6:31 p.m.
II. ROLL CALL:
1. Welcome to New Commissioner Loretta Fornaciari
Director Ranals introduced Commissioner Loretta Fornaciari. Commissioner Fornaciari
stated that she has lived in South San Francisco all her life. She was a free-lance stage
manager. She is currently a Landscape Contractor and the owner of Fornaciari
Landscaping. She is also a member of Soroptimist International of San Bruno/Millbrae.
Director Ranals also introduced Kari Jung, the new Administrative Assistant who has
taken over the duties of retired Administrative Assistant, Janice Hill.
Present: Boldenweck, Fornaciari, Hobson-Coard, Madrid-Nickle, Looper,
Moncé, Ventura
Absent: Commissioner Woo

III. AGENDA REVIEW: No changes.
IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Minutes from November 15, 2018 stand as sent.
Please note that Commissioner Madrid-Nickle arrived at 6:45 p.m. after roll call was
taken.

VII.
1. Community Civic Campus Update
Director Ranals distributed the copy of the schematic design of the Civic Campus that
the Smith Group presented at the Park and Recreation Meeting on Tuesday, January

15. She stated that the Smith Group will be giving additional presentations on the

following dates: Tuesday, January 22 at 6:00 p.m. at the Library Board of Trustees
rd
Meeting; Wednesday, January 23at 7:00 p.m. at the City Council Meeting; on
th
Wednesday, February 6at 6:00 p.m. at the Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee;
th
and finally Thursday, February 7 at 7:00 p.m. at the Planning Commission Meeting.
She informed them that the dates of these presentations as well as others could be found
on-line. She encouraged the Commission to attend.
Director Ranals continued and gave a brief overview of the presentation. She stated the
Civic Campus building will have 3 stories. The entry level will include the social hall
and atrium area. The Council Chambers will be a separate building. The second floor
host the Park and Recreation classes. The third
floor will consist of the adult library, a flex space and the administrative offices. She
reported that construction would start the middle of 2020 with completion of the
building targeted for 2022.
Director Ranals gave an update on the vandalism of Orange Slices. Director Ranals
stated that the artist of Orange Slices and Popsicles did not represent his sculptures as
he had stated. Orange Slices should have been constructed with a post down the middle
of the sculpture. This is why it was vandalized so easily. Popsicles was checked and
also was not supported with a post. The artist has stated he will replace both sculptures
at no cost. She reported that Popsicles is being removed next week. Director Ranals
stated that the teenagers are being prosecuted, but there will be no restitution for the
sculptures.
2. 2019 Goals Questionnaire Results
Specialist Santos distributed the summary of the three returned surveys. She requested
the Commissioners check their committee assignments and contact her if they had any
changes.
3. Friends of Cultural Arts Commission Group
Commissioner Looper had nothing to report at this time.

VIII. SUBCOMMITTEES:
1. Sculpture
Vice-Chair Boldenweck stated that it would be good to do a call for entries. Director
Ranals advised them to identify at least two locations for the prospectus. Vice Chair
Boldenweck asked if they could use the five locations from the previous call for entries.
Director Ranals stated that they could and that she would provide these locations at the
next meeting.
Commissioner Looper suggested a possible location on Westborough Boulevard between
Junipero Serra Boulevard and Orange Avenue
Art.
Commissioner Fornaciari suggested the Brentwood Park area and Avalon Park.
Commissioner Looper stated that the Brentwood area has been selected before, but that
the Council did not approve it. Director Ranals also stated that in the past the residents
indicated that they did not want a sculpture at the park.
Director Ranals stated that her impression is that Councilmember Addiego would like to
see street art along the Grand Avenue area where it would be more visible.
Commissioner Madrid-Nickle stated she would like to be in charge of a committee on
street art. Commissioner Looper made a motion to start an Urban Art Committee with
Commissioner Madrid Nickle as the Chair. Vice Chair Boldenweck seconded the motion
and it was unanimously approved Commissioner Fornaciari added that she would serve
on the committee as well.
2. Utility Box Mural Program
Specialist Santos reported that the Utility Box guidelines and applications are on-line.

Specialist Santos reported on behalf of Commissioner Woo. The language on the
applications was updated to include language indicating the Commission could elect to
increase the final award amount at their discretion and depending on the available funds.

was discussion about including a condition that the student would have to be present at
either the school ceremony or City Council meeting to get their prize. Director Ranals
also stated they might want to include a stipulation to allow an exception for a hardship
case in which the student is not able to attend either meeting.

4. Photography Show (January 25 & 26)
Specialist Santos distributed the docent list. She stated that Commissioner Woo was
unable to assist. Therefore, she requested two volunteers in order to help receive the art
on Wednesday, January 23, from 5:00 p.m.to 7:00 p.m. Commissioners Boldenweck and
Moncé volunteered.
5. Sing in the New Year Karaoke Night (January 25)
Specialist Santos reported that the D.J. is confirmed. Chair Hobson-Coard stated she is
looking forward to the event.
6. Youth Art Show (March 15 & 16)
Specialist Santos reported that the January Visual Arts Meeting had been cancelled. The

next one is scheduled for Monday, February 11 at 3:30 p.m. at the School District
office
7. Floral Mania A Quilting Exhibit (May 10 & 11)
Specialist Santos reported that the title selected for the Quilting Show was
IX. NEW BUSINESS
1. Election of Officers
Director Ranals asked for nominations for Chair and Vice-Chair. Commissioner Looper
nominated Vice Chair Boldenweck for Chair and she accepted the nomination. The
nomination was seconded by Commissioner Ventura. The Commission unanimously
approved.
Commissioner Moncé nominated Chair Hobson-Coard for Vice Chair and she accepted
the nomination. The nomination was seconded by Commissioner Looper. The
Commission unanimously approved.
X. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION:
Chair Hobson-Coard informed the Commission that her 15 piece art exhibit, at the San
Bruno Library, has been extended until the first week of February. She invited the
Commission to attend.
Commissioner Madrid-Nickle informed the members that there was a tattoo convention in

XI ITEMS FROM STAFF:
1. Commissioner Photographs on Cultural Arts WebPage
Specialist Santos informed the Commission of a proposal to include their photographs on
the Cultural Arts Commission webpage. They could opt to take individual photos or a
group photo. She reported that the Park and Recreation Commission had decided on a
group photo. The consensus of the Commissioners was to also take a group photo.
Director Ranals stated she would inform them when the date is selected.
Director Ranals also informed the Commission of the CPRS District 4 Awards and

Volunteer Recognition Dinner being held on February 28 in Cupertino. She stated that
Commissioner Looper and Vice-Chair Boldenweck had been selected as outstanding
volunteers and will be recognized at the dinner. Fellow Commissioners congratulated
them.
Specialist Santos thanked the Commissioners for providing art and collectables for the
Commission group atrium window exhibit. She also gave a special thank you to past
commissioner, Rena Donati, for providing additional art for the window. She stated the
display will be up until after the Photography Show.
