CALL TO ORDER: 6:32 p.m. II. ROLL CALL: Present: Boldenweck, Campagna, Fornaciari, Madrid-Nickle, Ventura, Woo Absent: Hobson-Coard, Looper, Moncé Staff Present: Danielle Sanderson, Business Manager Ercie Santos, Cultural Arts Specialist Susan Filereto, Administrative Assistant III. WELCOME NEW COMMISSIONER RYAN CAMPAGNA: Chair Boldenweck welcomed new Commissioner Campagna. He expressed his enthusiasm and referred to the comments he made on his background at the February meeting. Chair Boldenweck also introduced, Danielle Sanderson, the new Business Manager for the Parks and Recreation Department. Manager Sanderson stated that Director Ranals was attending the California Association of Parks and Recreation Commissioners and Board Members (CAPRCBM) Conference in Sacramento, and that she was covering the meeting in her absence. IV. AGENDA REVIEW: V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes from February 21, 2019 stand as sent. VI. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION: VII. OLD BUSINESS: N/A Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of March 21, 2019 Page 2 VIII. SUBCOMMITTEES: 1. Sculpture Chair Boldenweck asked if there had been any response from City Council about sculpture locations. Specialist Santos replied that Council had no direction. Chair Boldenweck stated that she would like to proceed with the call for Sculptures. Specialist Santos informed Commissioners that locations must be identified in order to prepare a prospectus. Commissioner suggestions for possible locations were welcome. She also offered the possibility of considering suggestions by staff. Commissioner Ventura suggested Avalon Park on the corner of Avalon Drive. Commissioner Fornaciari suggested Brentwood Park. Specialist Santos informed Commissioners that this location had been chosen in a past year, but the residents did not want a sculpture there. However, she noted that this location could be revisited. Commissioner Campagna suggested Winston Manor Park. Chair Boldenweck stated there are two parks in Winston Manor. One is at the end of Clay Park and the other is on Dundee. Chair Boldenweck also suggested the Sunshine Garden area. 2. Utility Box Mural Program Commissioner Madrid-Nickle stated she had nothing to report at this time 3. Youth Art Scholarship Commissioner Woo reported that the application was on the City website and distributed to all the schools. They also promoted the scholarship program at the Youth Art Show. th Awards Ceremony will be on the same day this year, Tuesday, May 14. will be from 6:00 p Commissioner Ventura asked if the scholarship included the Performing Arts. Specialist Santos stated it did, and that in 2004 they did award the scholarship to a dancer. Youth Art Show (March 15 & 16) Commissioner Woo reported on the Youth Art Show. She stated that Chair Boldenweck did a wonderful job as the Master of Ceremonies. The Friday night performances included Parkway Heights Woodwinds, El Camino Jazz Band and the Polynesian Dance group. There were 424 art exhibits and 594 vistors signed the guestbook. She reported that the teachers did a wonderful job hanging up the art work. On Saturday, she stated that the Recreation Ballet Folklorico group performed. There was a craft project hosted by a South San Francisco School District teacher. Commissioner Woo reported that there is an extended exhibit of 126 pieces at the Municipal Services Building and 10 pieces are at City Hall. The exhibit will run until th April 16. 5. Floral Mania A Quilting Exhibit (May 10 & 11) Chair Boldenweck reported the sign-up sheet was going around and would also be available at the next meeting. 6. Urban Art Commissioner Madrid-Nickle reported that the committee met on Monday. They recommended creating a Request For Proposals (RFP) that will include 15 to 20 art pieces that will be located in downtown Grand Avenue. City Council supported a theme to inform the public of the downtown non-smoking ordinance. Other health related themes could also be included. Commissioner Fornaciari stated that they will be using garbage cans, poles, fire hydrants, etc. Future projects could include walls on the parking structure. Commissioner Woo requested $10,000.00 for the Urban Art Project. The RFP will include a request for 15 to 20 pieces of Urban Art with Specialist Santos stated a rough draft of the RFP would be prepared for the next meeting. Commissioner Fornaciari made a motion to approve $10,000.00 for the Urban Art project. Commissioner Ventura seconded the motion, and it was unanimously approved by roll call vote. Specialist Santos also informed the Commissioners that another $50,000.00 dollars for Public Art has been requested for the next fiscal year budget. Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of March 21, 2019 Page 4 Business Manager Sanderson stated that she will be attending a Park and Recreation and Public Works Joint Meeting. She will follow up with Public Works on the Urban Art project and ask them what paint is good to use. Commissioner Woo asked her to inquire about glow in the dark paint too. IX. NEW BUSINESS N/A X. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION: Commissioner Woo stated the City Council is approving the addition of two more Cultural Arts Commissioners. Business Manager Sanderson informed Commissioners that it is on the City Council agenda for this Wednesday. Chair Boldenweck stated originally there were 15 Cultural Arts members. She stated increasing the size of members spreads the workload. Chair Boldenweck also stated she will not be at the April meeting. She will be in New Orleans. She will advise Vice Chair Hobson-Coard. XI ITEMS FROM STAFF: Specialist Santos stated she updated the 2019 Goals/Committee List to include the committees that Commissioner Campagna has chosen. Specialist Santos also reported that the Childcare Division will be doing an Art Show on April 12. She stated no time has been set yet. Business Manager Sanderson stated the Smith Group will be doing a presentation on the th Civic Campus at the April 16 Park and Recreation Meeting. She invited the Commissioners to attend. Business Manager Sanderson also reported that the Admin Team is transitioning the Cultural Arts Agenda and the Parks and Recreation Commission Agenda to Legistar. She stated that the Commissioners will be able to download it on their smart phone or go to the City website to access it. To Chair Boldenweck observation regarding the quantity of events on the City website. Business Manager Sanderson stated Veronica Ortiz, Office Specialist in the Recreation Department has been responsible for uploading all the Recreation Special Events on the website.
