CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION MEETING
CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO

I. CALL TO ORDER: 6:31 p.m.
II. ROLL CALL:
Present: Boldenweck, Hobson-Coard, Campagna, Foley, DeNatale,
Looper, Moncè, Madrid-Nickle, Ventura, Woo

III. WELCOME NEW COMMISSIONER PETER FOLEY
Chair Boldenweck welcomed Commissioner Foley. She stated they are all very happy to
have him on the Commission.
IV. AGENDA REVIEW:
Chair Boldenweck noted two corrections. The first one, under Item 8 Subcommittees,
number five, should read General Art/Sculpture/Performing Arts. The second one,

under New Business, should read 2020 Art Show Dates Selection of 3 Date in May or
July.
V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Minutes from May 16, 2019 stand as sent.

VII. OLD BUSINESS:
1. Community Civic Campus Update
Director Ranals reported that the City Council approved the schematic design of the
Community Civic Campus at the last City Council meeting. She also stated that there
were no public comments and that the architects are moving ahead with the design.
Commissioner Looper asked when they would start construction. Director Ranals
replied that the construction of the Police Department would begin in January 2020
and the Community Civic Campus building would break ground around July 2021.
VIII. SUBCOMMITTEES:
1. Sculpture
Chair Boldenweck had nothing to report at this time.
Specialist Santos reminded Commissioners that sculpture locations need to be
identified. Also the utilization of the funding required consideration. The question
was whether to reserve funds for a larger piece in the future or to use funding now to
acquire more moderate selections.
She also reported that Popsicles and Orange Slices have arrived and are at the
Corporation Yard. Director Ranals gave a brief overview on the status of these
sculptures for the new commissioners. She informed them that the two sculptures
will return to their original locations. She will notify the Commissioners when the
installation is scheduled.
2. Utility Box Mural Program
Commissioner Campagna reported that the subcommittee is recommending utility
box locations for the submissions selected in June. Chestnut and Hillside was
Megan Pagano. South Spruce and Centennial
Way was selected by Tiffany Van Walter and
Finny Balboa. Westborough and Gellert was chosen for Charlene
Casuga. The exact location for the Paradise Valley entry is yet to be determined. The
artist provided a water color sample of her work in response to the subcommittee
request.
There was discussion regarding reasoning for the location selection. Commissioner
Woo mentioned that there were other locations including Hillside and Hilton, North
Canal and Linden, and Hickey and Hilton.
Commissioner Foley asked how the Utility Boxes are chosen. Specialist Santos and
Director Ranals gave a brief overview of the program and how it was promoted.
Director Ranals also stated that if Commissioners had any artist referrals, they can

forward them to staff. Specialist Santos added that they have extended the deadline
to July 12 and that the call for entries is available on the Cultural Arts webpage.
Commissioner Woo made a motion to approve the three utility box locations,
Chestnut and Hillside, South Spruce and Centennial Way, and Westborough and
Gellert. Commissioner Campagna seconded the motion, and it was unanimously
approved by roll call vote.
In regards to the Paradise Valley entry, Director Ranals stated it was the Paradise
Valley residents who had requested having input on the art that is chosen for that
particular box. She stated that it is up tas to what they
would like to do. Director Ranals also reminded the Commission that the utility box
mural artworks are temporary installations. Specialist Santos stated there had been
no indication of an exact location on the entry. After discussion, it was decided to
only approve the design with follow-up discussion regarding the location to occur
with the residents. Commissioner Woo made a motion to approve the design for
Paradise Valley. Commissioner DeNatale seconded the motion, and it was
unanimously approved by roll call vote.
3. Urban Art
Commissioner Madrid-Nickle reported that the sub-committee has rescheduled the

deadline for September 6.
4. Fundraiser BBQ (August 25)
Commissioner Moncè reported on the barbeque stating that Specialist Santos would
be passing around the Volunteer List for them to sign up. She emphasized that help
would be needed starting at 8:30 a.m. on the event date.
She stated that Administrative Assistant Patea requested a recommendation on the
Trader Joes donation of $50.00. It could either be a silent auction gift card or $50.00
worth of products excluding alcohol. It was decided to leave the use of the donation
to her discretion.
Specialist Santos stated that each Commissioner was allotted ten adult tickets and
reminded them that there were no sales quotas. Unsold tickets could be returned.
Administrative Assistant Susan Filereto would have tickets available after the
meeting. Specialist Santos also reported that J & J Barbeque is donating the hot dogs
and hamburgers.
There was discussion about the amount of food to purchase. In 2018, the attendance
was 190 people and they ran out of food. However, in previous years the attendance
had only been approximately 100 people. The consensus was to increase the amount
of food to accommodate 250 people. Any excess food would be donated to a charity
such as Safe Harbor Shelter.

Commissioner DeNatale asked about silent auction donations. Specialist Santos
stated that donation request letters had been sent. She added that they should contact
staff if they had a donation or know of someone who wanted to donate.
5. General Art/Sculpture/Performing Arts
Specialist Santos confirmed the availability of the Marie Peterson Room for the
Visual Arts Exhibit freeing up the Council Chambers for performers.
There was a discussion on what kind of performers and the performance dates.
Various suggestions were discussed including having Friday musical groups,
Saturday classes, a Karaoke event, and a smaller scale Dia De Los Muertos feature.
Commissioner Woo commented that a Master of Ceremonies (MC) was required for
the performances.
Director Ranals stated the Department would be willing to pay for a music group as
they did once in the past.
Specialist Santos requested a decision by the July meeting because preparations,
including document creation and scheduling of the artists, had to be made
immediately.
IX. NEW BUSINESS:

1. 2020 Art Show Dates Selection of 3 Date in May or July
Specialist Santos stated that the third 2020 art gallery show date needed to be
selected. Similar to past years, available dates were either in May or July. After
discussion, there was a call by show of hands. It was five to three in favor of the third
show being held in July. Chair Boldenweck and Commissioner Woo abstained.
X. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION:
Commissioner Moncè stated that her dance group was celebrating 25 years of performing
and a show is scheduled for August 10 at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center. She
added that they were selling advertising space as a fundraiser. If Commissioners wanted
details they could contact her directly.
Vice Chair Hobson-Coard invited the Commission to watch her band, ,
perform on Saturday, July 21, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Park Chalet. They would
also be performing there on September 8.
Commissioner Woo raised a concern that the first 2020 art gallery show was scheduled
for February 14. After discussion, it was decided to keep the February date with the
thought that it could be promoted as a holiday-themed special art event.

XI. ITEMS FROM STAFF:
Specialist Santos stated that Mayor Masumoto proposed that the Commission present an

art-themed workshop for the Childcare STEAM Program. The program, for 3 to 8
graders, runs until July 11. The Childcare Program supervisor welcomed a 30 to 45
minute demonstration from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Manager Duldulao added the SSF
Unified School District had received a grant for it. Commissioner Campagna volunteered

to present a one hour workshop on photography for 6, 7, and 8 graders on June 27.
Specialist Santos spoke to Parks Manager, Greg Mediati, regarding Commissioner
inquiry on painting the metal pipe on the corner of West Orange and El
Camino. Parks Manager Mediati responded that the property is owned by SFPUC and
that he is doubtful that they will allow painting.
Specialist Santos reported that July is Parks and Recreation month. The Department will
be offering free classes during the month of July.
Director Ranals reported on a new Cultural Diversity Grant Program which supports local
organizations that offer free or low cost community events and activities. This grant
program awards between $500.00 to $2,000.00. Director Ranals reported that five groups
were recommended to receive a $2,000.00 grant.
Recreation Manager Duldalao reported that Melinda McMonigle was recently hired as
the Recreation DepartmentSSF native who is
currently completing her senior year at UCLA as a Geography/Environmental Studies
major with a minor in Food Studies. She will be assisting with marketing programs and
helping out with special events.
Recreation Manager Duldulao also let the Commission know that their jackets had
arrived and they could pick them up after the meeting.
