CALL TO ORDER: 6:32 p.m. II. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners: Boldenweck, Hobson-Coard, Foley, Fornaciari, DeNatale, Moncè, Madrid-Nickle, Ventura Absent: Commissioner Campagna, Commissioner Looper Staff Present: Sharon Ranals, Assistant City Manager, (ACM)/Director of Parks and Recreation Angela Duldulao, Recreation Manager Ercie Santos, Cultural Arts Specialist Susan Filereto, Administrative Assistant III. AGENDA REVIEW: No changes IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of August 15, 2019 stand as sent. V. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION: N/A VI. OLD BUSINESS: N/A Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of September 19, 2019 Page 2 VII. SUBCOMMITTEES: 1. Sculpture Chair Boldenweck reported the sub-committee is meeting after the conclusion of the regular meeting. They will have an update in October. 2. Utility Box Mural Program Commissioner Madrid-Nickle reported that the artists have started painting the utility boxes at South Spruce and Centennial Way, Westborough and Gellert, Hillside and Linden, and Chestnut and Hillside. 3. Urban Art Commissioner Madrid-Nickle reported that the sub-committee reviewed the only submission received, which was from artist, Aaron Arevalo. She added that he is a local artist. Commissioner DeNatale for consideration and stated they would like to move forward with this submission. He also read the After discussion and a generally positive consensus, ACM/Director Ranals stated the next step was to forward a recommendation to Council. Commissioner Fornaciari made a motion to approve Urban Art proposal. Commissioner Foley seconded the motion. 4. Fundraiser BBQ (August 25) Commissioner Moncè reported that they had approximately 75 to 120 guests at the BBQ. Their proceeds were $3,057 dollars. She stated this amount was down from 2018; however, the proceeds were about even with the previous years. They had 39 silent auction items and one live auction item which were the Giants tickets. She acknowledged the South San Francisco Scavengers for donating the Giants tickets and thanked Commissioner Foley for facilitating the live auction. She also thanked Vice Chair Hobson-Coard and Commissioner Ventura for providing entertainment while the silent auction winners were being determined. Commissioner Moncè stated that the 2020 BBQ date needed to be confirmed. They had the option of either August 23 or August 30. After discussion, it was decided that they hold the fundraiser on August 30. Commissioner DeNatale made a motion to approve the date of August 30, 2020 for the Cultural Arts BBQ Fundraiser. Commissioner Fornaciari seconded the motion. Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of September 19, 2019 Page 3 Commission feedback for the future event included raising the bidding increments, getting more art-related donations, designing and promoting the event so as to distinguish it from the annual Senior picnic, and featuring an art exhibit. Commissioner Fornaciari commented on the importance of all Commissioners being present and Commissioner Ventura responded that even though some Commissioners were not present for the entire event from set up to break down, they put in a lot of work behind the scenes in preparation for the event. ACM/Director Ranals mentioned that Administrative Assistant Marie Patea, who has helped organize the Cultural Arts BBQ for many years, may not be available next year due to her new assignment. Commissioner Moncè mentioned that more volunteers are needed in the Fundraiser (planning) sub-committee. 5. General Art/Sculpture/Performing Arts (October 11-12) Vice Chair Hobson-Coard reported that 2-dimensional art only will be accepted on Wednesday, October 9 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. On Thursday, October 10, Sculpture and Recycled Art will be accepted from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. She stated Commissioners are welcome to submit entries with no entry fee charged. However, their entries cannot be judged and they needed to complete the application form. Art will be hung on Thursday, October 10 starting at 1:00 p.m. in Betty Weber and Marie Peterson rooms. She stated they will need at least two volunteers to hang art. Entertainment will be held in the Community Room on Friday, October 11 starting at 6:30 p.m. It will consist of musical performances by Diversity Glee and Elvis Chair Boldenweck raised concerns about not having enough space for the Recycled Art pieces. Specialist Santos responded that in the past they have received on average about 40 pieces of General Art; however, one year they did receive up to 71 pieces. As far as sculpture pieces they have received no more than a couple of pieces. Since Recycled Art is a new media, she did not know how many entries to expect. Commissioner DeNatale suggested raising the entry fee. Commissioner Boldenweck responded that the low fee was more of a courtesy to the artist. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION: Vice Chair Hobson-Coard invited the Commission to see her extended three-month art exhibit at Philz Coffee in Redwood City. Vice Chair Hobson- perform on Sunday, October 13 at Pier 32 for Fleetweek, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. She stated they will also be performing on October 19 at the Park Chalet from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Commissioner DeNatale stated he attended the Civic Campus presentation at the Parks and Recreation meeting and found it very informative. He encouraged his fellow Commissioners to attend the October 9 City Council meeting where there will be another Civic Campus presentation. He reported that it may be possible to hang temporary art in the hallways of the new building; however, there will be no permanent art space, although some areas may be utilized for exhibits. Chair Boldenweck stated that she will be attending the Tuesday, September 24 Library Board meeting. There is a Civic Campus presentation scheduled. ACM/Director Ranals informed the Commission that there is no permanent art exhibit location because due to costs they had to scale back. She added that they are exploring the possibility of art exhibit hanging systems with the architect. She suggested that since the Civic Campus is not scheduled for completion until 2022, the Commission could bank their cultural arts funds and consider purchasing a public art piece for the new building. She appreciated any feedback that the Commission had on art displays. Commissioner Fornaciari asked at what City Council meeting the Urban Art proposal would be presented. ACM/Director Ranals replied that at this time it would be presented to the City Council as a memo so they could provide feedback. Commissioner DeNatale mentioned he attended a recent Shape SSF General Plan meeting. He prepared notes on his thoughts regarding the future planning of Public Art projects and shared them with the Commission. He requested the topic be included in Chair Boldenweck stated she would like the Commission to present a Day of the Dead themed art show for the October 2020 art show dates. She added she would chair this event. Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of September 19, 2019 Page 5 Commissioner DeNatale mentioned that a Valentine Holiday love theme had been discussed for the General Art & Music show in February, but suggested the theme could also reflect Black History month. ITEMS FROM STAFF: 1. Notice of Commissioner Events and Exhibits Manager Duldulao reported that the Administrative staff generates a weekly memo to Council in order to update them on important Parks and Recreation Department activities and issues. It is prepared and sent on Tuesdays so that Council receives it on Thursday. She suggested that the Commissioners use this venue to highlight their personal art events if they wish to invite City Councilmembers. Manager Duldulao stated that Commissioners can either email her or Specialist Santos if they have any notices they would like included therein. Specialist Santos reported that she and Manager Duldulao toured Miller Garage, Magnolia Center, and the Orange Library to assess their feasibility for possible longer art shows. She distributed photos for Commissioners to review. She briefly commented on the pros and cons regarding availability, access, lighting, space and security. She added that all the building contacts were supportive of an art exhibit. Chair Boldenweck commented that they can follow-up on the suggestions or pursue different venues. Specialist Santos also highlighted the upcoming Civic Campus presentation, Concert in the Park, and General Art, Sculpture, Recycled Art Show. Flyers were distributed. Specialist Santos mentioned that the annual San Francisco Open Studios Program takes place four weekends in October. Commissioner Fornaciari asked if a comedy night could be considered for the 2020 General Art and Music Show. Commissioner DeNatale responded that a comedy night was a good idea; however, it was a more adult-oriented entertainment. Other more suitable locations such as Fort McKinley or 47 Hills Brewery were suggested as possible venues. XI.
