CALL TO ORDER: 6:30 p.m. II. AGENDA REVIEW: Agenda item IX.4, Fundraiser – Virtual Auction – August 27 – 29, was moved to the first item under Unfinished Business. IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES of July 15, 2021: Minutes for July 15, 2021 stand as sent. V. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION: N/A VI. PRESENTATION: Recognition of the Virtual General Art Exhibit “A Study in Contrast” Finalists (Cultural Arts Specialist, Ercie Santos; Commissioner Risha Bond) Specialist Santos welcomed each of the exhibit finalists to speak about their submitted pieces.  Rose Wong, “Misty Mountains”  Marilyn Foley, “Wide Water View #6”  Jay Bergman, “Striation 1”  Nancy Calef, “Cliffhanger”  Nadine Levin, “If Not For The Light There Would Be No Shadow”  Jeffrey Nemeroff, “Abstracts Sea 1” and “Abstract Sea 2” ACM/Director Ranals suggested that the Cultural Arts Commission (CAC) begin to integrate this format of artist spotlights at future shows, virtual or in-person. Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of August 19, 2021 Page 2 VII. UNFINISHED BUSINESS 1. Update: 2022 Art Show Schedule (Cultural Arts Specialist, Ercie Santos) a. 1st show – February 11 & 12  Commissioner Hobson-Coard identified as Chair of this exhibit. b. 2nd show – March or April TBD c. 3rd show – May 13 & 14 or July 14 & 15  July 14 & 15 selected d. 4th show – October 14 & 15 Action: Commissioner Hobson-Coard to consult with subcommittee to determine media for February show. 2. Caltrain Public Art Update (Deputy Director of Capital Projects, Philip Vitale) Deputy Director Vitale detailed the public art selection process for the Caltrain Station Improvement Project, and introduced the selected piece.  City Council dedicated $500,000 to bring public art to the plaza and tunnel.  Request for proposals (RFP) received 16 proposals from 15 artists.  Kinetic wind sculpture piece titled “Inspire” by Ride Art, LLC selected, site preparation and installation planned for Fall 2022.  Commissioner Bond proposed physical exhibit panel to accompany the piece, in addition to QR code plaque planned.  Several commissioners voiced their support, and Deputy Director Vitale agreed to explore the option for any remaining funds to be dedicated to a physical exhibit panel. VIII. NEW BUSINESS 1. San Mateo County Arts Grant (Recreation Manager, Angela Duldulao)  San Mateo County Arts Grant opportunity in amount of $10,000.  Chair DeNatale proposed afterschool program similar to one piloted by Redwood City to provide an outlet for children who would otherwise be in detention.  In response to Commissioner Maharaj’s question about if the grant had to be in the South San Francisco boundaries or geared towards residents, ACM/Dir Ranals noted that the grant project might need Council’s support to match funds, and because of this, the program would have to be focused on SSF. Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of August 19, 2021 Page 3 IX. SUBCOMMITTEES: 1. Strategic Vision  Chair DeNatale noted that Public Art Master Plan RFP is being finalized.  Specialist Santos added that RFP will likely be ready in September. 2. Sculpture  No update from Commissioner Boldenweck at this time. 3. Urban Art  Commissioner Bond noted that the subcommittee had discussed a plan for murals in two areas.  Budget of $50,000 and subcommittee is considering options that would allow a smaller budget.  List of mural artists to be developed. Action: Commissioner Foley to send muralist information to Specialist Santos and Mgr. Duldulao. 4. Fundraiser – Virtual Auction August 27 – 29  Commissioner Bowen noted that the online auction site is now live, bidding opens Friday August 27 and closes Sunday August 29.  Participants required to create account and pre-register to bid. 5. Virtual General Art Exhibit – July 23 – August 31  Commissioner Bond noted that the exhibit judge will not give a presentation on the judging process at the September meeting, but enjoyed the exhibit and was impressed with the community art. 6. Quilt Exhibit 2021 Virtual – Oct/Nov  Commissioner Boldenweck informed commission that formatting for the exhibit entry form has been updated by Specialist Santos, and a mailer will go out soon. 7. Performing Arts  Commissioner Maharaj proposed hybrid live events on behalf of subcommittee.  Artists to perform in their homes, municipal spaces, or in local business.  Streamed event would highlight artists and SSF businesses while still connecting with and providing entertainment to our community.  Financial overhead and staff coordination for hybrid live events discussed. 8. Community Engagement  Commissioner Mardahay reported on slideroom.com platform recommended by Commissioner Foley as option for artist registry.  Subcommittee will be mining data from art survey responses to inform their work, and will be making a list of local nonprofits. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION Announcement Commissioner Hobson-Coard invited all to view her artwork featured at the Philz Coffee in Redwood City until August 24, and at Philz Coffee Sunnyvale (ongoing). XI. ITEMS FROM STAFF: 1. Upcoming Events  Movie Night/Covid-19 Vaccination Clinic at Martin Elementary School on August 20.  Orange Park and Centennial Way Master Plan surveys close on August 22.  ACM/Dir Ranals recommended CAC engage in community outreach and encourage residents to communicate their desire for public art in surveys.  Virtual Jewelry Auction scheduled for August 27 – 29.  Senior Health Fair on August 27 cancelled. Announcement Mgr. Duldulao informed commissioners that increase in commissioner stipend approved by City Council at their July 28 Council meeting. XII. CORRESPONDENCE: Provided by Specialist Santos.
