TELECONFERENCE MEETING Welcome to the Meeting of the Cultural Arts Commission. Please note that the Cultural Arts Commission may meet by teleconference, consistent with the Brown Act as amended by AB 361 (2021). Under the amended rules, the City will not provide a physical location for members of the public to participate in the teleconference meeting. The purpose of conducting the meeting as described in this notice is to provide the safest environment for staff and the public while allowing for public participation. Commissioners Boldenweck, Bond, Bowen, Cansino, DeNatale, Foley, Hobson-Coard, Maharaj, Ramos, Vice Chair Mardahay, and Chair Campagna and essential City staff will participate via Teleconference. Members of the public may submit their comments on any agenda item or public comment via email or Parks & Recreation main line. PURSUANT TO RALPH M. Select Media for July & October 2022 Art Shows (Cultural Arts Specialist, Ercie Santos) ▪ Specialist Santos asked that the Commission select the type of media to be featured at upcoming art shows in July and October to ensure time for event preparation and promotion. ▪ The Commission discussed media types and approved the following decisions via unanimous roll call vote: o July/August art show — handmade 2D arts and crafts, excluding art made digitally or with computers o October art show — General Art, with the theme of Día de Muertos VII. NEW BUSINESS: N/A Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of February 17, 2022 Page 2 VIII.SUBCOMMITTEES: 1.Strategic Vision ▪Commissioner DeNatale announced that the Public Art Master Plan RFP evaluation team completed interviews of two finalists. Staff are in the process of ranking and vetting finalists before the selected proposer is announced. Action: ▪Commissioners to review the Public Art Plan Guidance document that was attached to the packet in preparation for work to begin on the Public Art Master Plan. ▪Commissioners send potential contacts to engage in the Public Art Master Plan to the Community Engagement subcommittee. 2.Sculpture ▪Mgr. Duldulao shared that “Rusty” (officially titled “American Dog”), the sculpture located at Orange Memorial Park, has been vandalized. ▪The Parks Division is in the process of contacting the artist to get advice as to how best to restore the sculpture. 3.Urban Art ▪Commissioner Bond shared information about a mural opportunity from a mural class at Skyline College that is offering to design and complete a mural for the City. ▪There is a short timeline for the mural opportunity; Urban Art subcommittee will move forward with site selection and review of final design. ▪Teacher of mural class will be invited to make a presentation to the full Commission at the next meeting. ▪Mgr. Duldulao announced that restoration of the Prometheus mural at the SSF Caltrain Station parking lot has moved into phase two, involving complete renovation. 4.Youth Art Programs ▪Commissioner Bowen shared that the Youth Art Show will take place on April 29–30, 2022 with the theme being “Celebrating Diversity”. ▪The subcommittee is planning to bring back the Cultural Arts Commission BBQ fundraiser at the Joseph A. Fernekes Recreation Building on August 28, 2022. Action: Commissioner Bond requested that the docent sign-up list be circulated in advance of any upcoming art shows. 5.Photography Exhibit – February 11/12, 2022 ▪Commissioner Hobson-Coard provided a progress update on the virtual photography show, “Momentum-Moving Forward”, set to begin on Monday, February 21, and end on March 21, 2022. ▪The exhibit features 24 pieces of art by 11 different artists; 6 entries were awarded. ▪The atrium window at the Municipal Services Building will display the awarded artwork while a TV monitor will also run a video display of all the submissions. ▪The awardees will be invited to the next meeting to receive recognition for their work. Community Engagement ▪ Commissioner DeNatale noted his Strategic Vision subcommittee update, asking Commissioners to refer potential contacts to engage in the Public Art Master Plan to the Community Engagement subcommittee. IX. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION Announcement ▪ Commissioner DeNatale shared that with the closing of Tanforan mall, the Peninsula Arts Foundation will be displaced. o Director Mediati offered to reach out to the Economic and Community Development Department to see if they have any resources that could help this group find a home. ▪ Commissioner DeNatale invited the Commission to a virtual art show on February 18, 2022 that remembers the 80th anniversary of the executive order which imprisoned people of Japanese descent in the area. X. ITEMS FROM STAFF: 1. LPR Site Tour RSVP ▪ Administrative Assistant Firpo reminded Commissioners to RSVP for a tour of the new Library and Parks & Recreation site on February 23 and February 24, 2022. 2. Upcoming General Plan Events ▪ Mgr. Duldulao referred to the General Plan meeting flyer in the meeting packet and reminded Commissioners about the opportunity to provide feedback on the General Plan. Announcement Mgr. Duldulao shared that the mask mandate has been lifted in San Mateo County meaning while masks are still highly encouraged for all persons, fully vaccinated individuals do not need to wear a mask in most public spaces. Staff Update Director Mediati informed the Commission of the follow staffing updates: • Erin O’Brien has been promoted to Business Manager and will be taking a more active role with the Cultural Arts Commission. • Angela Duldulao will be Acting Deputy Director of Parks & Recreation. • Kelli Jo Cullinan will be Acting Recreation Manager.
