CALL TO ORDER: 6:30 p.m. II. ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners: Boldenweck, Bond, Campagna, Cansino, DeNatale, Foley, Hobson-Coard, Maharaj, Mardahay, Ramos Absent: Commissioners: Bowen Staff Present: Greg Mediati, Director of Parks & Recreation Angela Duldulao, Acting Deputy Director of Parks & Recreation Ercie Santos, Cultural Arts Specialist Erin O’Brien, Business Manager Gabriella Firpo, Administrative Assistant III. AGENDA REVIEW: N/A IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES of February 17, 2022: Minutes for February 17, 2022 stand as sent. V. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION: N/A VI. PRESENTATION 1. Award Finalists “Momentum-Moving Forward” Virtual Photography Exhibit (Cultural Arts Specialist, Ercie Santos) ▪ Specialist Santos introduced the four finalists from the “Momentum-Moving Forward” Virtual Photography Exhibit. ▪ Jay Bergman, Belinda Carr, Simon Wan, and Nadine Levin all shared insight on their artwork and the Commission expressed their admiration and gratitude for these submissions. VII. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: N/A VIII. NEW BUSINESS: 1. Skyline College Mural Project (Business Manager, Erin O’Brien) Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of March 17, 2022 Page 2 ▪ Business Mgr. O’Brien introduced an opportunity to work with Professor Amir Esfahani and his Skyline College mural class that will be designing and executing a mural on the Alta Loma baseball field bathroom structure. ▪ The mural class and project are grant-funded, so this mural is being offered at no cost to the City. ▪ The goal is to start the mural in the next two weeks with a tentative finish date in May. ▪ Professor Amir Esfahani presented the design and discussed the concepts that he and his class have developed for the mural project. ▪ Commissioners expressed their gratitude for this opportunity. ▪ Suggestions from Commissioners about the mural design include reaching out to a representative from the Ohlone Tribe to get feedback on the Ohlone references in the design, and adding signage that could include a QR code that leads to more information on the meaning of the art and gives credit to the class. Action ▪ Commissioner Cansino to put Professor Esfahani in touch with the San Mateo County Native and Indigenous Peoples Initiative. IX. SUBCOMMITTEES: 1. Strategic Vision ▪ Commissioner DeNatale announced that the Public Art Master Plan RFP evaluation team has selected the project consultants and they have been notified by the City. ▪ The City is currently working on completing the contracting process with the consultant. 2. Sculpture: No update. 3. Urban Art ▪ Commissioner Bond shared a comic storyboard that the restoration artist for the Prometheus mural had created to update the Commission on the status of repairs to the mural. 4. Youth Art Programs ▪ Chair Campagna announced that the in-person youth art show will take place on April 29 and 30. The deadline to submit artwork online will be April 15, 2022 and participants can deliver their artwork on April 22, 2022. ▪ The South San Francisco Childcare Program, which serves roughly 500 students, will contribute art to the art show. ▪ This year’s Youth Art Show will include the poet-in-residence presentation, which is offered in collaboration with the Library; Commissioner Bowen will represent the Commission as a judge to select the poet-in-residence. ▪ Commissioner Bowen and Specialist Santos are working on addressing details for the Cultural Arts BBQ Fundraiser and will have an update at the next meeting. Community Engagement ▪ Commissioner Mardahay shared that the subcommittee is building a database of nonprofits, academic institutions, and anyone connected to art in the South San Francisco area. X. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION Announcement ▪ Commissioner Hobson-Coard is participating in Women’s View 2022, the San Mateo County Women’s Art Show, taking place from March 1 to April 29, 2022 at 400 County Center, Redwood City. XI. ITEMS FROM STAFF 1. Update to Goals & Committees Listing ▪ Specialist Santos explained that the Goals & Committees Listing has been updated to reflect all the upcoming projects and art shows. 2. Upcoming Events ▪ SSF Parks and Recreation Department Easter Bunny Photo Hop on April 9, 2022 at Orange Memorial Park from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. ▪ SSF General Plan Community Open House on March 22, 2022 at the Joseph Fernekes Building from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. ▪ Ruth Waters exhibit will take place on April 1, 2022 at 5:30 p.m. in Redwood City.
