CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION MEETING
CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO
Thursday October 20, 2022
Teleconference Meeting
I. CALL TO ORDER: 6:30 p.m.
II. ROLL CALL:
Present: Commissioners: Boldenweck, Bond, DeNatale,

III. WELCOME NEW COMMISSIONERS
Commissioners Luster, Pomposo, and Zelaya gave the Commission a brief introduction about themselves.
IV. AGENDA REVIEW: N/A
V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES of September 15, 2022:
Minutes for September 15, 2022 stand as sent.
Motion to approve by Commissioner Luster
Followed by a second from Commissioner Pomposo
Passed by majority vote VI. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION: N/A VII. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: 1. 2023 Art Shows: May & October
Commissioner Bond suggested that the Commission consider doing a one-time cancellation of the May 2023 art show in favor of focusing the Commission's efforts
on fundraising.
The Commission discussed the possibility of adding an art exhibit/performing arts
component to the August fundraising event; further consideration to be discussed in the Fundraising subcommittee.

Deputy Director Duldulao informed the Commission the San Francisco Opera
inquired about doing a pop-up event at Orange Memorial Park in March 2023.
The Commission will bring back the Day of the Dead art exhibit as the October 2023 art show. Commissioner Boldenweck and DeNatale suggested extending it through the first week of November 2023. 2. Cancellation of December 15 meeting
Motion to cancel the December meeting by Chair Mardahay
Followed by a second from Commissioner Maharaj
Roll Call Vote Results | The Commission will cancel the December meeting. (AYES:
Bond, Boldenweck, DeNatale, Foley, Luster, Maharaj, Mardahay, Pomposo and Zelaya. ABSENT: Bowen and Ramos) 3. Subcommittee Reorganization
Commissioner DeNatale suggested breaking up the Youth Art Programs subcommittee back into two subcommittees: 1.) Youth Art Programs 2.) Fundraising.
Chair Mardahay suggested eliminating the Community Engagement subcommittee.
Commissioner DeNatale suggested moving Commissioner Maharaj from an alternate to a member of the Strategic Vision Subcommittee.
Chair Mardahay volunteered to join the Performing Arts subcommittee, as well as the
Fundraising subcommittee.
The Commission will discuss the restructuring of the subcommittees in the November meeting and elections will take place in January’s meeting. VIII. NEW BUSINESS: 1. Capital Projects Update
Deputy Director of Capital Projects, Philip Vitale, updated the Commission on the
Caltrain Plaza Public Art, Orange Memorial Park Aquatic Center, Centennial Trail
Improvements, and Linden Avenue Park. General updates were given and discussions were had on incorporating art to each project.
Updates were given on the Caltrain Plaza sculpture, and limitations regarding potential future art in the Caltrain tunnel due to water issues was introduced.
Commissioner Bond requested that the Urban Art Subcommittee be updated on
possible options for potential installations within the tunnel given the new parameters.
An assessment will be made to determine if the existing art piece at Orange Pool can be reused for the new swimming pool.
Deputy Director of Capital Projects, Philip Vitale, shared with the Commission
feedback from the public regarding public art.
IX. SUBCOMMITTEES: 1. Strategic Vision
Commissioner DeNatale informed the Commission their subcommittee has requested to be notified of the Public Art Master Plan focus group meetings. 2. Sculpture
Commissioner Boldenweck informed the Commission they are working out the details
for the Bat Country sculpture.

Commissioner DeNatale informed the Commission they are working on a proposal to present during the November meeting regarding the modern industrial art piece
presented in 2019.
3. Urban Art
Per Vice Chair Bond, the Request for Qualifications for muralists has been drafted and is in the process of being finalized. 4. Youth Art Programs
No update. 5. Day of the Dead Art Show (October 14-15)
Commissioner Boldenweck informed the Commission there were 26 art entries submitted and 17 artists. She also added the activities incorporated into the art show were well attended.
The virtual art exhibit will be available by the end of the month.
6. 2D Art Show (Jan 27 & 28, 2023)
Vice Chair Bond informed the Commission the theme for the January art show is
“Abundance.”
The art show is open to people over the age of 16.
Cultural Arts Specialist, Ercie Santos, will be sending out a volunteer-sign up sheet. 7. Performing Arts
The Commission confirmed they would like to incorporate a musical aspect in the January art show, per Commissioner Maharaj’s inquiry. 8. Community Engagement
Chairperson Mardahay reminded the Commission this will be the last Community
Engagement Subcommittee update since it was decided to not have a dedicated
subcommittee unless city staff determines it is necessary to have a dedicated subcommittee. X. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION: 1. Commissioner DeNatale informed the Commission The Society of West Coast Artists is hosting a gallery exhibition featuring Skyline College students. The exhibition will
continue through November 4, 2022, every Wednesday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. The gallery is located at 527 San Mateo Avenue, San Bruno. XI. ITEMS FROM STAFF: 1. Halloween Extravaganza (October 22, 2022)
This event will take place at the Orange Memorial Park from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. 2. Holiday Boutique (November 5, 2022)
This event will feature a variety of vendors and will take place in the Municipal Services Building from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
3. Thanksgiving Fun Run (November 19, 2022)
The starting point for the 5k run or walk is 340 Point San Bruno in South San
Francisco and will begin at 9:00 a.m.
4. Wreath Holiday Workshop (December 3, 2022)
This event features two sessions. The first session is family friendly and is from 9:30
a.m. – 12: 00 p.m. The second session is from 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. and is only for
adults.
