ROLL CALL: Present: Commissioners: Boldenweck, Bond (6:40 p.m.) *, DeNatale, Foley, Huerta, Luster, Pomposo, Sanchez Absent: Commissioners: Maharaj Staff Present: Greg Mediati, Director of Parks and Recreation Angela Duldulao, Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation Erin O’Brien, Business Manager Ercie Santos, Cultural Arts Specialist Keren Solano, Administrative Assistant II III. AGENDA REVIEW: N/A IV. PUBLIC COMMENT: N/A V. PRESENTATIONS 1. Cultural Arts Program Changes for 2024 ▪ Greg Mediati, Director of Parks and Recreation, presented the Cultural Arts Commission program changes for 2024 to the Commission. 2. Subcommittee Reorganization 2024 Cultural Arts Goals and Committees Questionnaire Results ▪ Specialist Santos informed the Commission there were eight surveys submitted and gave a brief overview of the results. ▪ The Commission discussed options for their subcommittees and agreed to the new 2024 goals and committees presented. 3. Subcommittee Reports ▪ February Art Show: “By the Light of the Moon, Celebration of Lunar New Year, Year of the Dragon” ▪ Vice Chair DeNatale informed the Commission the art show will take place from Friday, February 9 through Saturday, February 10. He announced JoJo Liu, a local calligraphy artist, will be judging the art show. Dates for the extended art exhibit will be shared with the Commission once they are finalized by City staff. The docent sign up list was provided for Commissioners to provide their availability for the art show. ▪ Specialist Santos informed the Commission they can submit an online art entry, if interested, by using the link she emailed them. Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of January 24, 2024 Page 2 ▪ Public Art ▪ Commissioner Boldenweck informed the Commission that the Shane Looper Memorial Bench has been installed at the Library | Parks and Recreation Center (LPR) on the third floor. ▪ Commissioner Boldenweck also suggested that future consideration be made for potential purchase of a second bench by Michael Gustavson to accompany the existing Shane Looper Memorial Bench at the Library| Parks and Recreation Center third floor lobby. ▪ Strategic Vision ▪ Chair Bond thanked staff for providing the Commission with a printed copy of the final Public Art Master Plan (PAMP). ▪ Youth Art Programs ▪ Specialist Santos informed the Commission that the first South San Francisco Unified School District Visual Arts Committee meeting to begin planning for the Youth Art Show occurred last month. The Youth Art Show will take place at the Library | Parks and Recreation Center this year. The subcommittee will be provided with the link for the upcoming February zoom meeting. ▪ Other ▪ None. VI. MATTERS FOR CONSIDERATION 4. Motion to approve the minutes of November 16, 2023 ▪ Minutes for November 16, 2023 stand as sent. Passed by majority vote. 5. Election of Officers ▪ Commissioner Foley motioned to nominate Commissioner Pomposo as the Commission’s new Chair. The nomination was accepted by Commissioner Pomposo. Followed by a second by Chair Bond. ▪ Roll Call Vote Results | The Commission accepted Commissioner Pomposo as the new Chair of the Commission. (AYES: Boldenweck, Bond, DeNatale, Foley, Huerta, Luster, and Sanchez. ABSENT: Maharaj). ▪ Commissioner Boldenweck nominated Commissioner Luster as the new Vice Chair. Commissioner Luster accepted the nomination. Followed by a second by Commissioner Bond. ▪ Roll Call Vote Results | The Commission accepted Commissioner Luster as the new Vice Chair of the Commission. (AYES: Boldenweck, Bond, DeNatale, Foley, Huerta, Pomposo, and Sanchez. ABSENT: Maharaj). ▪ Deputy Director Duldulao thanked Commissioners Bond and DeNatale for their service in 2023. 6. Report regarding a resolution modifying the Cultural Arts Commission meeting date to take place on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. ▪ Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation Duldulao presented the resolution to modify the meeting date. ▪ Commissioner DeNatale motioned to adopt the new meeting date to take place on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Followed by a second from Commissioner Boldenweck. Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of January 24, 2024 Page 3 ▪ Roll Call Vote Results | The Commission adopted the resolution for the modification of the new meeting date. (AYES: Boldenweck, Bond, DeNatale, Foley, Huerta, Luster Pomposo, and Sanchez. ABSENT: Maharaj). 7. 2024 Cultural Arts Program Annual Work Plan ▪ Business Manager O’Brien gave a brief overview of the 2024 Cultural Arts Program Annual Work Plan. ▪ Commissioner Sanchez identified corrections to the “Anticipated Completion Calendar Year” for the Quarterly Art Shows. ▪ Commissioner Boldenweck motioned to approve the proposed 2024 Cultural Arts Program Annual Work Plan with the identified corrections. Followed by a second from Vice Chair Luster. ▪ Roll Call Vote Results | The Commission approved the 2024 Cultural Arts Program Annual Work Plan. (AYES: Boldenweck, Bond, DeNatale, Foley, Huerta, Luster, Pomposo, and Sanchez. ABSENT: Maharaj). 8. Opportunity for Awarding Stipends to Judges or other Contributors of the Art Shows ▪ Business Manager O’Brien presented the recommendation on whether to pursue options for financial compensation for art show judges or contributors to an art show. ▪ The Commission discussed and concluded staff should research potential rates for financial compensation options to award art show judges and contributors to review for future programs. ▪ Commissioner Huerta motioned to research options for financial compensation of art show judges and contributors. ▪ Followed by a second by Vice Chair Luster ▪ Roll Call Vote Results: (AYES: Boldenweck, Bond, DeNatale, Foley, Huerta, Luster, Pomposo, and Sanchez. ABSENT: Maharaj) VII. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION: 1. Commissioner DeNatale inquired about when the two vacancies on the Commission will be filled. Per Business Manager O’Brien, staff did not have specific dates, but noted that the vacant seats have been included in the City Clerk’s general call for commissioner applicants. VIII. ITEMS FROM STAFF 1. Upcoming events: Specialist Santos announced the Centennial Way Park South Groundbreaking event that will take place on Saturday, February 3 from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. 2. Specialist Santos informed the Commission that the recruitment for several City boards and commissions vacancies, including the Cultural Arts Commission, was announced by the City Clerk’s Office. The deadline for applications is February 12 at 5:00 p.m. She also announced that the solo art exhibit from Charles McDevitt ended on January 21 and his artwork will be removed on January 28. 3. Correspondence: Specialist Santos provided the correspondence at the meeting and announced it would also be emailed to Commissioners. IX.
