AGENDA REVIEW: N/A IV. PUBLIC COMMENT: N/A V. PRESENTATIONS 1. February 2024 Art Show Presentation to Award Recipients ▪ Specialist Santos gave a brief presentation on the February 2024 art show and announced the award recipients. Recipients were presented with their awards at the meeting. 2. Skyline College Mural Presentation ▪ Business Manager O’Brien, presented information on the proposed mural project on behalf of Skyline Professor Amir Esfahani, who could not be present at the meeting. She explained that the Commission has worked with Amir Esfahani and his Skyline College Community Mural Project classes in the past, including the mural at the Alta Loma Park structure, and the Centennial Way Trail bridge at Old Mission Rd. ▪ The selected location of the 2024 mural project is on Willow Avenue in the Sunshine Gardens Neighborhood. Business Manager O’Brien walked the Commission through the site mockup created by Professor Esfahani and the students. ▪ The proposed mural project vision of the South San Francisco past, present, and future entwined within the root system of trees was discussed by the Commission and well received. Commissioner Fernandez suggested allowing more space for the future representation of South San Francisco. Commissioner Huerta recommended including a biotech representation for the current section of South San Francisco. Business Manager O’Brien, will report their feedback to Amir Esfahani. Cultural Arts Funding Review, July 2023 – February 2024 ▪ Deputy Director Duldulao, presented the quarterly funding review to the Commission. She added that the Commission’s hoodie sweatshirt continues to sell at the Recreation Office and clarified that the South City logo t-shirt sales do not go towards the Commission’s funds. ▪ On Attachment 1: Cultural Arts Fund Summary – By Fund report, Deputy Director Duldulao identified an error in Table 5 and explained that the Year-To-Date Credits should only show a balance of $500,000, leaving an Ending Balance of $322,601. ▪ On Attachment 2: Cultural Arts Donations/Fundraising Account, Deputy Director Duldulao explained the history and intention behind the Base Program Reserve in Section C – Encumbrances to address a question from Commissioner DeNatale at the February meeting about additional funding available for scholarships. ▪ Commissioner Fernandez suggested exploring other funding sources and offered to assist staff with this process if needed. Deputy Director Duldulao, explained that staff plans to review the Commission’s priorities with the Strategic Vision Subcommittee. 4. California Parks and Recreation Society District 4 Award Nominations ▪ Business Manager O’Brien, announced that Specialist Santos is being recognized for her 20+ years of leadership as a driving force behind the arts in South San Francisco at the upcoming California Parks and Recreation Society (CPRS) District 4 awards dinner. Additionally, Evangelina Portillo, who for several years has volunteered as judge and a featured artist in the Day of the Dead Art Show as well as in several other Commission events, will be recognized at the awards dinner. In addition, Recreation Leader Jim Reidy and the Library | Parks and Recreation Center will be recognized at the Awards dinner. The awards dinner will take place at the Library | Parks and Recreation Center (LPR) on Thursday, May 9 at 6:00 p.m. Commissioners are invited to attend and will be contacted by staff to get their RSVP. 5. Subcommittee Reports ▪ February Art Show ▪ Business Manager O’Brien, advised Commissioners to read through the email debrief provided by Commissioner DeNatale. The debrief was included in the Commission’s packet as an attachment. ▪ June Art Show ▪ Commissioner Huerta announced that the call for entries for the June art show will be available on April 10. She is working on the flyer design. ▪ Performing Arts ▪ Business Manager O’Brien, informed the Commission that this year’s Cultural Activities Grant application was included in the packet. She explained the subcommittee’s role in application review and also recognized Management Analyst Kari Jung for her work on organizing the grant. ▪ Chair Pomposo will fill the current Chair vacancy on the Performing Arts Subcommittee. Commissioner Ramos will be an alternate member. ▪ Public Art ▪ Business Manager O’Brien, informed the Commission that the subcommittee plans to meet in April. She also provided the Commission with some brief updates and reminders on various public art items. She informed the Commission that the Bat Country sculpture logistics are under discussion. The Commission was reminded that the new Aquatic Center Groundbreaking event is Saturday, March 30. After Cultural Arts Commission Minutes of March 26, 2024 Page 3 the groundbreaking, the Eternal Flame sculpture will be safely removed and put away in storage pending assessment from consultants regarding resurfacing next steps. The Evohelix sculpture on the corner of South Spruce and Centennial Way will need to be removed and relocated due to construction plans from the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) who owns the property. ▪ Commissioner Boldenweck suggested an additional meeting with the Veteran’s group to continue discussion about the Eternal Flame sculpture. ▪ Strategic Vision ▪ No update. ▪ Youth Art Programs ▪ Commissioner Sanchez announced the upcoming Youth Art Show which will take place on April 12 and 13 at the LPR. He also announced the South San Francisco Library’s Poet-in-Residence competition where Chair Pomposo will serve on the selection panel. ▪ Specialist Santos added that the Youth Art Show will feature artwork on all three floors at the LPR. Performing arts will also be featured during the show. She also provided a docent list for Commissioners. ▪ Goals Chart ▪ The updated Goals Chart was provided to the Commission for their review. VI. MATTERS FOR CONSIDERATION 1. Motion to approve the minutes of February 27, 2024 ▪ Motion: Commissioner Boldenweck ▪ Seconded: Commissioner Luster ▪ Roll Call Vote Results | Minutes for February 27 stand as sent. (AYES: Boldenweck, , DeNatale, Fernandez, Foley, Huerta, Luster, Maharaj, Pomposo, Ramos, Sanchez). NAYES: None ABSENT: Bond). VII. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION: 1. Commissioner Boldenweck reported on a Historical Society presentation she attended by See’s Candies CEO, Pat Egan. 2. Commissioner Ramos thanked the Parks and Recreation Department for their support in allowing St. Augustine’s Church and the Italian Catholic Federation host an evening of dinner and music for seniors at the Roberta Cerri Teglia Center. Music was provided by the Praise & Glory Choir from St. Augustine’s Church. 3. Chair Pomposo commented on her enjoyable experience at the dinner and expressed appreciation for the flowers the church group gave to participants as well. VIII. ITEMS FROM STAFF 1. Business Manager O’Brien, shared an image of a new sculpture by artist Stan Huncilman installed at the Celeste Apartments, a private development located at Cypress and Miller Avenue. Business Manager O’Brien also noted that the development permits preceded the City’s Public Art Requirement for Private Development. 2. Deputy Director Duldulao invited Commissioners to attend the new Aquatic Center Groundbreaking event on Saturday, March 30, starting at 10:00 a.m. at Orange Memorial Park. 3.
