CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
A RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE ACTION OF THE CALIFORNIA
LEGISLATURE IN ITS SUPPORT OF A CALIFORNIA BICENTENNIAL
CELEBRATION AND PETITION TO THE POSTMASTER GENERAL
OF THE UNITED STATES TO ISSUE A STAMP COMMEMORATING
SUCH BICENTENNIAL.
BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
South San Francisco that
WHEREAS, in November 1769, Governor Gaspar de
Portola and his Expedition, exploring the Coast of California
discovered San Francisco Bay from Sweeney Ridge in San Marco
County, and
WHEREAS, from the wilderness the Portola Expedition
encountered, this state has grown to a stature and eminence
unparallelled by any other State of the Union, and
WHEREAS, the commemoration of the Bicentennial of
the Portola Expedition is an event in which this City, located
upon the historic E1 Camino Real, can take unique and singular
pride, and
WHEREAS, an event in which the history of this Nation
has had such tremendous outgrowth is worthy of national recog-
nition, and
WHEREAS, the practice of the United States Post Office
Department to issue commemOrative postage stamps is a suitable
means by which all the citizens of the United States mmy join
with Californians in commemorating the Bicentennial of the
Portola Expedition,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED
THAT:
1. This Council endorse the action of the State Legislature
in its support of a California Bicentennial Celebration and
urges all the citizens of South San Francisco to co-operate in
efforts to promote such celebration and make it a success;
2. This council further en~dorses the petition by the.Legis-
lature on ~enate Joint Resolution No. 9 wherein the Postmaster
General of the United States was requested to have issued a
commemorative stamp in honor of California's Bicentennial;
3. The City Clerk be, and he is hereby ordered to cause a
certified copy of this resolution to be sent to the California
Bicentennial Celebration Commission, the Postmaster General
of the United States, and the Portola Expedition Bicentennial
Foundation.
I hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was
regularly introduced and adopted by the City Council of the
City of South San Francisco at a regular
meeting held on the 18th day of December , 19 67
by the following vote:
