CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
A RESOLUTION AMENDING THE SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO
EMPLOYEE CLASSIFICATION PLAN BY THE MODIFICATION
OF A CLASS SPECIFICATION.
BE IT RESOLVED By the City Council of the City of South San Francisco that
the Employee Classification Plan, as amended, is further amended as follows:
1. The Class Specification for the classification of
Code Enforcement Officer; as set forth in exhibit "A"
attached hereto is hereby modified.

CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER
DEFINITION
Under supervision to be responsible for the field enforcement of the
Building and Zoning Ordinance and other assigned ordinances and codes
of the City of South San Francisco, and to do related work as
required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This'classification is distinguished from specialized inspector
classes in that it is responsible for field investigation and enfor-
cement of a wider variety of municipal codes and ordinances; as
opposed to specialized inspection and enforcement of codes and ordi-
nances performed by incumbents in the classifications of Public Works
Inspector, Building Inspector and Industrial Waste Inspector.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Makes field investigations and reports findings to supervisor;
receives and investigates complaints of nuisances and alleged viola-
tions of zoning ordinances and building regulations; obtains evidence
of violations, prepares reports with recommendations and assists in
the preparation of cases for Planning Commission, City Council, and
court action; makes periodic site inspections for conformity to
approved plans and for landscape maintenance; inspects projects under
construction for compliance with conditions imposed by the Planning
Commission and/or City Council; works in cooperation with other City
departments/divisions; makes business license inspections; coor-
dinates the occupancy permit procedure; meets with citizens, business
owners, and special interest groups to explain ordinances and codes;
operates a variety of machines and equipment, such as automobile,
camera, measuring tape, measuring wheel, calculator, and drafting
equipment; makes public presentations of research and findings and
helps maintain records; may issue noti'ces of violation and/or cita-
tions in the course of the enforcement of Building, Zoning and other
assigned ordinances and codes of the City; may exercise powers of
'arrest in aCcordance with the Municipal Code and Penal Code Section
836.5; performs other related duties.
QUAL I F I CATIONS
Knowledge of:
Principles, practices, and;purposes of city planning; and/or
land use;
Social, economic and environmental concerns as related to
planning and building;
Nomenclature, symbols, and techniques;
Code enforcement procedures to include issuance'of notices
of violation, citations and arrest powers.

Ability to:
Comprehend applicable ordinances, codes and policies;
Work cooperatively with other departments, agencies and citizens
in obtaining data or information as necessary;
Establish and maintain effective and good public relations;
Prepare and present clear, concise and comprehensive verbal and
written reports.
LICENSE
Possession of a valid California Driver's License as issued by
the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
EDUCAT I ON
Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade, supplemented with two
years of college work in related field. Related experience may be
substituted for years of college on a year-for-year basis.
EXPERIENCE
One year of code enforcement work, building inspection, engi-
neering, city planning experience, or related field.
