The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of the City of South San Francisco was held in the City Hall Monday evening, May 19th,19~4. The meeting was called to order at ?;Z0 o'clock p.m. by Trustee H.F.McNe~lis, President the board. ROLL CALL. Roll call found all trustees present, to-wit;- Trustees, Carl Blank, F.A.Cunningham, A.J.Eechelbach, H.EcCaffrey, and H.F~McNel~is. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and there being no objection were approved~ as read. Edward P.Eauffmann made application to the Board for permission to move a small cottage from Grand Avenue between Linden and Maple to the south side of Grand Avenue between LLaple and Spru( Permission granted. A co~munication was received from the Pacific Gas & Electric Company asking permission to set new poles and replace po~es on ~Laple Avenue near Grand Avenue. Referred to the street committee, An application was received from the Fraternal Order of Eagles asking permission to hold dance in Fraternal Hall Saturday evening ~ay Zlst next, the same to continue until 2 a.m. Granted. An application for a free soft drink license was received from Edgar C.Ray, an ex-servic~ man, for the location 2Z1 Gran~ Avenue. The license was granted by the following vote;- Ayes, Trustees, Carl Blank, F.A.Cunningham, A.J.Eschelbach, H.~cCaffrey, H.F.MoNe~lis. Noes, Trustees, None, Absent, Trustees, none. Silvo Guad~gni,~Z09 Magnolia Avenue,petitioned the board for permission to remove two gum trees and one Pine ~re~ from in front of his premises, claiming the roots are damaging the sidewal~ Referr, d' to the street co:~ittee. A-communication was received £rom the President of the Portuguese Society, A.N.Soares, csking permission for hi~ lodge to hold a parade on Sunday morning May 2~th next, and to hold a dan( in Fraternal Hall from 6 o'clock to 12p.m. The communication ~,lso requested permission to use lighl fireworks during the parade and the Board of Trustees and the City Marshal were invited to he in attendance. Permission was granted to hold the parade and dance. Permission was also granted to dis~ light fireworks provided that precaution be taken to prevent fires. A notice was received £rom the South Sang_Francisco and Improvement Company stating that t~ were clearing weeds from in front of their property and would continue to do so with the approval, · the Superintendent of Streets. It w~s the sense of the board that the city weed clearing crew would up all the land company lots uncleared ~hen all other weed clearing is finished. Notice ordered fil~ Charles Rossi wrote the board ~stating that many of the city trees were badly in need of w~ and advising that the water wagon be put into use. It was stated that the watering of the trees had already begun. A communication was received from ~rs. Carrie E.Winterhalter asking that the Board turn $7~.01, b~lance in the Anti-tubercular fund, to the Secretary-Treasurer of the South San Francisco Committee, of the California Tuberculosis Association. On motion carried by ~he vote of all members bo~rd the clerk was instructed to draw a check on the Anti-tuberculosis Fun~ for the balance in the The laid over petition of Peter Cavanaugh, 728-9th Avenue, for t~e re~ov&l of certain tre~ the vicinity of his property was taken up, and refers'ed to the street co~m~ittee. A co~Eunicmtion was received from Lorenzo ~amoriano, Juniper Avenue Grocery ~tore, askin~ the board if it is permissible,to move his grocery store from its present location on Juniper Avenue to a proposed new brick or Concrete building on lots 18,19 anf 20, block 1Z3, on Linden Avenue High~ On account of thi~ location being in the restricted district formed by the Zone Ordinance the matte~ was laid over for investigation before replying to the communication. The written opinion of City Attorney Davis in the ~atter of a suggested Sunday closing ordinance was nent re~d. The City Attorney advised against the passage of an ordinance of this char~ for the re~son that it might be classe~ as discrimonatory in a test case, as the sale of necessitie~ of life is involved. He believes that the business men's association could best control matters of this kind. 0pimion accepted and ordered placed on file. An application for a fireman's position was received from Clyde Emerson. Pound. aster. As there are no vacancies at the present time the application was placed on file. Nine application were received for the position of CiLy Policeman, Joseph Bildhauer,Lawre~ Nieri, Robert Dicckel, Harvey Hurst,Neal J.Taylor, Paul Purrissina, Joe.V.Bernardo, and Joseph Fisch There being no vacancies in the office of City Policeman the applications were ordered placed on fi Contractor Scampini a~peared before the board an~ stated that a contract would be let to h by N.Blandini, Linden Avenue, for the construction of a building alongside his present grocery store for the enlargement of the same, provided the sanction of the Board of Trustees be secured. After di ion the President of the Board appointed Trustees Eschelbach, Blank and ~cCaffrey a committee to investigate and'report back at the next meeting. The laid over application for a pool room license of Frank ~all~ce was next taken up and 1 over until a future meeting. Joe Ferrari, Conmercial Avenue, reported a sewer broken in the vicinity of his residence. City Engineer was instructed to hav~ the same repaired. President NcNellis reported a sinking of the sewer at Linden & Pine Avenues. The City Engi was instructed to give the matter his attention. The City Engineer at this point reported that the Fontana Feed Products Company had ~esZro several hundred feet of the city's outfa~l sewer in the city's right of way throug~ the Fontan~com~ property, and that waste sewege was accumul&~ing rapidly in the neighborhood of the factory. He was instructed to repair the city's z, ection of the sewer east of the factory and the clerk was instructe to notify the the Fontana Company to repair the destroyed section as soon as the city's portion sha~ have been repaired. Alex Welte, Commander of Bernard ~cCaffrey Pest ~8~, American Legion, addre~,sed ~he board on Americanization Day, stating that Captain Dancey, lecturer on Americanization would be in South San Francisco Friday, May 2Zrd and would lecture in several places in the city.'He asked that the ~ the city issue a proclamation desJignating Friday ~y 2Zrd, as Americmmization Day calling upon tizens and residents to observe the day in a fitting manner. The President of the Board stated the proclamation would be issued according to request. RESOLUTION VACATING RESOL~TION AWARDING BONDS. A resolutiom was introduced by Trustee Cunningham vacating a resolution of award to the Cit~zen'S~Bank of South San Francisco the $~8.000 Municipal Improvement Bonds ~uthorized at a s~ Trustees, Carl Blank, F.A.Cunningham, A.J.Eschelbach, H.McCaffrey, and H.F;McNellis. The motion was seconded by Trustee Cunningham and regularly carried.
