The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of the City of South San ~rancisco was hel~ in the City Hall Wonday evening, May 18th,~925. The meeting was called to order by Trustee ii.F.Mcl~elli£, i~resident of the board, at ?;~( o'clock p.m. ROLL CALL. Roll call found all trustees present, to-wit:- Trustees, C.Blank,F.A.Oun~ingham, A.J.Eschelbsch,H.McCaffrey,H.F.MclIeliis. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and th:re being no errors or omissions were approved as read. A petition was received from busines~ men in the vicinity of ~rand and Linden Avenues requesting the board to prohibit the continuous blowing of peanut whistles in that section off th~ city. "eferred to the City ~arshal for regulation. Application £or permis~lion to hold a dance in Fraterhal Hall Saturday evening June 2?th, was received from the Society 0[eraie Di Mutuo Soccorso. Permit granted. A communication was receive~ from The Daily Oommercial l~ews asking £or a contribution oJ ~250 to help publish its Fiftieth Anniveraary Ldition on the Seventy-fi~th Anniversary o£ ~alifo~ Statehooh, with two page devoted to South San Francisco. The clerk was instructed zo reply statin~ the city is not in a position to contribute at the present time. A petition was received, signe~ by a large number of residents, asking the board to ins1 additional fire alarm boxes where needed. President t,c~ellis statea the matter ~ou]~d be taken under a proposed new bond issue. Petition filed. A reply ~as received from the Crate Adjutant ~eneral's o££ice, acknowledging receipt of the city's list.off'trophies desired. Communication filed. The Market Street Railway Company submitted a statement showing the gross receipts off South San Francisco Railroad and Power Company £or the.year ending April 21st, 1925, to be ~29.00[ and the amount due the city under franchises to be ~580.10. The clerk was instructed to reply acknowledging the receipt and acceptance of the statement A report was received from M.A.Borba, street ~'weeping contractor, showing that at numer~ places in the city refuse dirt, sand,etc, iz~ left by contractors on the sidewalks and street gutt~ this being washed into the manholes by the r~ins. Chief Bellon was instructed to ta~e tab o£ pers¢ quilty of this violation of city ordinances and ~eport at the next meeting. Request was made by the South San Francisco Land and improvement~£or the refund of QjS.?~ weed tax charged .against portions of lots 1 and 2, block 127, J.f such can be granted. -'.equest den~ Applicationsfor building permits were r..~ceived from Sterling Foster, Lot ~2,block 123, lot 15,block 8~, E.Cortesi Lot 20, blocl C, Peck's subdivision, Permits g~anted. This being the date set £or receiving bids for the construction of a sewer in a portion of the alley in block 126~, trustee Eschelbach moved the bids be opened. The reports o£ the firechief, City Electrician and City Treasurer for the month of Apri~ · were next read. On mo'tion by Trustee McCafi'rey, seconded by Trustee Esche'lbach the reports were ~ A hole was re?orted in the pavement on San !~runo Head at Chapman Avenue.Deferred to the ~ ~ committee. ~- .~ Joseph ~Valker appeared before the board with reference to the widening and l~ghting of ~ Linden Avenue. After consideration of ~he subject a committee consisting o£ Trust~es idc~affrey an~ Gee Xneeseand City Attorney Davis and Jose':h ',ialker was appointed to make a study of the mat~,er and report ~ the Board o£ ~rustees. The matter of additional firemen's compenaationi~s brought up by City Attorney Davis, ~ after aeliberation action was postponea until the expiration of the present policy. The improvement o£ the fire alarm system by exten'~ion,&the improvement of the parks an~ civic center sites were next given the attention o£ the board. President i~cl~ellis a~p~ointed the B~ o~ Trustees and City Attorney Davis a committee to study the situation and devise ways and means i'undsby which to make the improvements. On recommendation of health Officer Doctor t.b.Doak at a previous meeting, that a Board of iiealth ~h, uid be appointed to wor~ in conjunction with the Health Officer, President appointed the following board, DR.T.C.Doak, Dr.J.C.Mc~overn,Dr. M.~.Lessard,±ra H.Potter, Mrs Silvio Eieri. City ~ecorder Nolan was requestea by the Sre~ident to make a few remarks regarding his office. The Recorder stated he is not imposing the extreme limit of punishment on offenders for traffic or liquor law violations, holding that the o~fenders in mo~t cases are of the working classes, and not in a sense wilful criminals, ne also stated~too strict enforcement of statutes covering such cases tended to discredit a community, which places the same at a business disadvantage. His remark~' were. well received by the audience, City Attorney Davis reported a conference with the Railroad Conmission on water rates for the City of South San ~rancisco. He stated that after a study of the queDtion he believed the rates asked for by the water company are too high and suggest%d an offer of approximately one half, namely ~15 for double hydrants insteaa of ~0, and ~l~ for single ones instead of ~24. Accordingly Trustee Cunningham introduced a resolution naming the rates suggested by the attorney. The resolution was adopted by the unanimous vote of the board. ~{esolution recorded in Book of Resolutions, volume #2, at page ~48. The motion was seconded by Trustee McCafffrey ana regularly carried..
