The re~lar meeting of the city council ef the City of South San Francisco was ~held in t'~
City Hall, ~¥~onday evening, February 5th,1940.
The meeting was called to order at 8 o'clock P.]~!. by ~ryor A.J.Eschelbach.
ROLL ~ ALL.
Roll call found the following councilmen present, as follows;-
Councilmen, A.J.Eschelbach, ~¥~.Yinucciant ,D.W.Ratto,~ Rod Tibbetts.
Absent, Councilman V.Boido~
The minutes of the three p revious meetings~were~read.
Councilman hatto stated the minutes did not include mention made at.a previous me
of a request to City attorney Coleberd to give an opinion as to the legality of a game run
at Oliver's restaurant sometimes known as pin ball, l0 strike, etc. The city attorney state
he would investigate the game and report at a l~ter meeting. The minutes were corrected to in
t~e notation and adopted as corrected.
An application was made by the Ram01er's Club to hold a dance on Saturday, ~ay 11,1940,
from 9 p.m. to 1 A.M. Permission granted.
?anager Henry (Dutch) Stelling of the ~ethleham Steel Ekaployes maseball Club applied fo
permission to use the South~ San Francisco ~.~'~'seball~ grounds, and reoueste~ Permission to erect
a large sign on Orange /'.venue at the highway, t~e was allowed the use of the baseoall grounds
but as to the erection of a large si~'n at the place designate¢~ he will have to confer with
Councilman Tibbetts as to tt:e locstion~ and also ~as to the time of the games.
Arthur C.Johnson filed an application for the position of fire truck driver. 2'he applicat
was ordered .placed on file.
Fire Chief ~'~elte submitted the names of Henry Schweining and George Carey for appointme
to the call forces of tioe fire department. On motion by councilman Ratto re~:,ularly carried t
apPointments were made.
Notice was received from Geo.~v;.Stout,State Liquor Achministrator that the case against
Antonette (~ambero,Dii[~A,Rex Club,751 BaYshore Righway, had.been continued to Friday, February
9th,11940,at the hour of 10 o'clock A.$. Accepted and filed.
A communication was received from California ~?.ission Trails Association, Ltd, requesting
the city to adopt an attached resolution proclaiming January 8th,week, as "I¥1ission Trails wee
in recognition of the work of the association,etc. Communication ordered filed.
A co~munication was received from Foster g Kleiserenclosing a lenfthy list of cities gnd
the amount of-licenses t~:ey charge the company for doing business. South San Francisco is
shown' as paying the ~i~hest of any of the cities mentioned. Twenty-four cities are named.
Councilman I~inucciani remarked that none but small cities were named~ and no action '.'~as ~aken
EngJ. neer i,~iarshall submitted a statement of the progress of the work of constructing the
Hillside sewer by R.G.Clifford, indicating tk~at the work was completed except for cleaning up
the ground in the trenches and replacing of rock macadam in certain parts, t~ie stated that e
in the sum of~48.43 were necessary for additional pipe and y's, and advised the payment of
· !~P, 09V on account, retaining .;~;53.0~, 10~,~ of the amount of the work. I',~otion was re~'ularly ma
i ~:'__, · ~nd carried~to pay the amount advised by the en~ineer.
Pacific ~as g~ Electric Company ssked for permission to extend their ~" gas main in the
norther-ly sidewalk area of Circle Court westerly from Orange Avenue. Referred to Councilman
Tibbetts and permission granted.
A co,mznunication was received from Eugene i¥~ilani,615 Baden Avenue, stating that a billbo
sign is located close to his new buildin~~, 935 ~.ayshore }iiuhway,on the north side, partially
ting the,,,view of all so~th bound traffic, and requested that the city orOer the board removed.
The City Clerk was instructed to request the company to remove the sign. Another billboard
was revorted to be too close to Blandini's F~soline station, V00 Bayshore Yighway. O'he cleric w
instructed to write Foster ~.~ ieiser and request that the sign be removeS.
~ The monthly reports of t~e healtt0 officer, building inspector,po~ndkeeper, fire chief,ci
city.~udge and chief of volice for the month ending ~anuary 31,1940 were submitted and accepted.

cisco authorizing the execution of a ouitclaim deed by t~e City of South San Francisco to Scut
San Francisco Land and Improvement Company, in the~matter of abandonfn?._ a portion-of Olive
Clive Avenue in this city . The resolution was adopted by the votes, of all the members of the
city council present,as follows;-

The claims having been audited by the finance cOmmittee councilman I'./Jindcciani moved

Councilman ~finucciani. requested., that one lire'bt be olaced in the o~,o~ block on Grand Ave~
complaints bavin come in on ~cco~n.t of darkne,~'s there. Councilman Ti ~betts reported that
one had been put in during!' the week.
Councilman Ratto requested that all ?~rchsses, whenever possible , be bought i.n South
San Francisco., including recreation supplies. Ail councilmen agreed this would be right and
to the _~,est interest~ of t~e city.
),r !~,'!~','-~]_ls was re~uested to use f~urt~er efforts to have vacant lots removed of all
refuse and w~ ~te matter.
