A regularly adjourned meeting of the city council of the City of South San Francisco was held in the city hall, Thursday evening, May The meeting was called to order at 7,30 o' clock p. me by Mayor Geo. W. Holston. Roll call fo,~,~ ~r~_ all members of the council present as follows: Councilmen V. Boido~ Rod Tibbetts, Geo. W, Holston, D, W. Ratto and Re,se Lloyd. The reading of the minutes of the previous meeting was dispensed withe The deputy city clerk reported that Mrs. Lyle, President of the Women's Club, telephoned that the club wished to withdraw their request for permission to sell reft, siren,nfs dur- ing the Fiesta, This was accepted by the council and the original letter o~dered filed. A communication was received from the Maoco Construction Company advising the city it would replace the sidewalk near their G~and Avenue office and restore the channel to it s original size, The matter was laid over to give the council an opportunity to see what repair ~ork had to be done. A communication was received from the South San Francisco Chamber of Commerce enclosing a copy of a letter sent to the State Railroad Commission requesting a reduction of telephone rates for the PeninsU~la Cities. Councilman Ratto~mde a motion that the city go on record as protesting the high ~ates for peninsula cities and that a reduction be asked for. The motion was seconded by Councilman Lloyd and duly carried. George W. Holston tendered his resignation as. a member of the South San Francisco Planning Commission, dated as of May 9, 1940. On motion by Councilman Ratio, second- ed by Councilman Tibbetts the resignation was accepted. Mayor Holston presented the names of Giuseppe DeNardi and A. J. Eschelbaeh to fill the vacancies now existing, City Attorney Colebe~d advised that two of the members terms expired October 3, 1939, that of M,, Capitelli and Dr. E. I. Bartlett. On motion by Councilman Tibbetts seconded by Councilman Boido and regularly carried, Giuseppe DeNardi was appointed to £ill the unexpired texan of Mayor Holston to October 3, 1940, On motion by Council_mm~ Tibbetts, seconded by Councilman Boido and duly carried A. J. Eschelbach was appointed to succeed Mr. Capitelli for the fou~ year term expiring October 3, 1943e The metter of the reappointment of Dr. Bartlett was discussed and Mayor Holston said he would get in touch with the doctor and as certain~ if he would accept a reappointment. Mayor Holston said the matter was laid over to the next regular meeting, but asked for the spokesman to present the a~Or~e Sam Zucco, representing the barbers said that all professional men had been eliminated ~m paying a business license and the berbers felt they should be treated in the same manner as they merely sold their services. Councilman Boido said the business me~ asked for the business ordinance and it was written up to their satisfaction. Councilman Tibbetts said he was in favor of $1.00 a year for barbers and cobblers, but it was his recollection that Mr. Leech appeared before the boax~ and asked that the license fe$ be set at Re Suggested the be~bers and business men thrash the matter out and present their find- ings to the council. Sam Zucco said the barbers did not belong to the Business men's Association, therefore felt it should be a matter between the barbers and city council. Co,mncilman Ratto said the barbers should not have to go back to the businessmen as the o~dinance has been adopted and out of t~e hands of the businessmen. Chief Belloni suggested the city ascertain the amount of license paid in ot~er cities. The clerk was instructed to write to various peninsula cities for this information. The matter was laid over awaiting this information. Counoilmau Ratio brought up the matter of street lighting and police protection for the street dance during the fiesta and also the change of location of the street, dance on Linden from Grand and Miller to Grand and Baden. The matter of street light- lng was referred to Councilmau Tibbetts and police protection referred to the Chief of Police, The council agreed that the Grand and Miller Avenue location for the dance, as p~eviously asked for was the better location, Oouncilman Lloyd discussed the traffic situation at Grand and Maple Avenues, stat- ing he had numerous complaints from pedestrians being unable to cross at this location pax~ic~rly at t~e peek hours. He suggested a traffic signal be installed. All councilmen were in accord tnat this matter should be taken care of. Council Ratto t~ought possibly the ~ gas tax money could be used fo~ this purpose. City Attorney Cole~ex~d was asked to look into this matter. Chief Belloni was asked to get prices on the cost of signals. Thex"~ being no furlfller business before the council.
