CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO,HELD
MONDAY, APRIL ?TH,1941.
The regular meeting of the c~t2 council of the City of South San Francisco was held in the
City Hall,Monday evening, April ~,1941.
The meeting was called to order at 8;10 o'clock P.M. by Mayor ~eorge W.Holston.
ROLL CALL.
Roll call found all city councilmen present,as follows,-
Councilmen, V.Boido,George W.Holston,Reese Lloyd, D.W.Ratto,Rod Tibbetts~
~he minutes of the previous meeting were read. There being no errors or omissions they wet
approved as read.
A communication was received from South San Francisco Chamber of Commerce stating that at
their last meeting motion was made and passed to petition the City Council to construct a brid
for pedestrians across the creek abutting the Martin School on city property for the accommoda
of ashool children from Peck's Lots and others having business in the city hall district. Also
to petition'the~Nater Department of San Francisco to construct a barrie~ ober their pipe ma~n~
for the protection of children who are now using the main to cross over. Engineer
instructed to submit .the cost of a bridge and the city clerk was instructed to request the San
Francisco Water Department to-cover their pipe main.
Mi~s ~anner~mn, ~0V Grand Avenue was granted a permit on request of Fire Chief Welts
to replace a floor at her place. Permit granted on motion by Councilman Ratto,seconded by
Councilman Lloyd and regularly carried. The estimated cost was stated to be $1~0.
A communication was received from Emil Person,libPmz~j contractor, se~ting forth that
the amount of $251.08 is due him for additions and alterations,approved by the architect,
~. ~utterson. The communication was ordered filed.
Mayor Hol'ston received a communication from Geo.W.Stedman, a newcomerto South San Frs
ciso, who received an invitation from the Ma~or to Join the cityC' festivities and become
acquainted with our citizenS. Mr.Stedgan thanked Mr. HoUston for the cordial invitation,said he
had never received such attention in any other town in the world, particularly from a Mayor, and
said when he gets better located in the city he would be glad to participate. Communication file
City Engineer Marshall submitted a statement showing that Mr. Kay,~80'Commercial Avenue,
claimed recompense from the city for a stoppage of a sewer in front of his place,which had been
cleaned out by plumber Silvio Minetti. He said the amount was for the sum of $22.~1, half of
which the city should pay. ~ayor Holston requested the engineer to notify plumbers not to dig
in the city streets without notice. The communication was ordered filed.
The Hedwwod City Fourth Of July Committee wrote, thanking the City Council for its $20
appropriation'to purchase a trpphy for their celebration on the Nation's Holiday.
In a communication to the city council Gordon Rowe ~ompany announced that they would includ
April tax collections at the end of April report. Accepted.
In a communication E.I.du PONT de NEMOURS & C0~/~ANY, INC., announced that, beginning May l,
their terms will be changed to NET ~0 DAYS, and any orders placed prior to May 1,19*l, for
immediate shipment, will be billed under the present cash discount terms of 1% l0 days, net ~0 d
Communication accepted and ordered placed on file.
Applications for bpsiness licenses were received from'Frank J.Wilson for a welding school
establishment at V0~ Bayshore Highway, Tony Lazzari Son, for a florist store at ?1~ Linden Ave
and W.A.Welllngham for a used car business on Lots 19 and 20, in Block B.Peck's Subdivision. A1
permits granted.
Chief ofPolice Belloni submitted the names of Clyde H.Denning, Lionel R. Moriarty and Hart
~ .Renton as special police-watchmen at the Western PIPe & Steel Works. Councilman Boido moved t
sppointments be confirmed. The motion was seconded by Councilman Tibbetts and regularly'-~carried.
The monthly reports of the Building Inspector,Fire Chief,City Treasurer, Chief of Police,
City Judge,Poundkeeper and City Clerk for the month ending March ~l,l~41, were submitted, and on
motion by councilman Lloyd,seconded by councilman Ratto and regularly carried,accepted.
In a communication to t~:e city council Chief of Police Belloni advised that officer Bildhau
l:ad returned to work on the First of ~April,l~41, a letter from his physician,Dr. Welfield ,
indicating his release. Communication accepted.
A communication was received from th Californi'a Committee For Public Ownership of Bridges,
urged the City of South San Francisco to join in sponsoring Assembly Bill 8~1, which is adVocati
the public ownership of the bridges. Ooun~ilmano_Ra~to ~nt~od~ced a ~ee~Ution~fa.~hei~c£t~ coun
of the City of South San Francisco resolving that the City Council of this city..~rges the enactm
cf this legislation and the inclusion of San~ateo and Dumbarton Bridges within the State Highwa
System. The resolution, NO .802, was adopted by the votes of all the members of the city counci
as follows;-
