The meeting was called to order by Mayor Ferko at 8 o'clock p.m.
The City Clerk having forwarded cop~ of the minutes of the meetings of July 19th, 21st,
and 26th, to all members of the City Council, Mayor Ferko asked if any omissions or
errors were noted. There being none the minutes were approved as submitted.
Communication was received from Buri Buri Homes, Inc. confirming offer of Lots 1 and
2 in Block 1 Buri Buri for the sum of $2,000 plus street assessment of $1~6.~0; this
offer to remain in force until September 1st. As this offer was considered out of
line, Mayor Ferko appointed a committee consisting of Councilmen Elder, Cortesi and
Boido to confer with Mr. Simpson of the Buri Buri Homes, Inc.
Communication was received from the Planning Commission recommending the approval
map submitted by the American Homes Development ~ Co. under date of June 18, 19~8.
Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that the recommendation of the Plannim~
Corem1 ssion be accepted.
Comsmmtcation was received from the Planning Commission recommending that request of
Mr. Louis Aeillo for permission to convert his property at 1052-5& Grand Avenue into
apartments be denied. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that the recommenda-
tion of the Planni~ Commission be accepted.
Communication was received from the Planning Commission recommending the rezoning of
the Avalon Tract from R-A to R-1. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that the
recommendation of the Planning Commission be accepted.
Communication was' received from the Planning Commission recommending that Nello Giorgi
be issued a variance permit in accordance with his re~luest. Motion was duly made,
seconded and carried that the recommendation of the Planning Commission be accepted.
Communication was received from the Planning Commission denying two use permits to
Messrs. Foster & Kleiser Co. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that the
recommendation of' the Planning Commission be accepted.
Communication was received from the Planning Commission approving tentative map of
High School Park Terrace, subject to certain changes. Motion was duly made, seconded
and carried that the recommendation of the Planning Commission be accepted.
Communication was received from the South San Francisco Unified School District re-
questing permission to move house on the C Street school site to the High School site.
Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that permission be granted.
Communication was received from the South San Francisco Unified School District re-
questing that the public utilities easement of 10' on the Buri Buri school site be
revoked. This matter was referred to the Works Engineer.
Communication was received from the Recreation C_~mmt_ssion recommending requirements
and salary for the position of Superintendent of Recreation and requesting that Civil
Service examination be held for this position at an early date. This communication
was tabled.
Ccem~cation was received from the Recreation Commission recommending that the plans
for the lighting of the football field at Memorial Park, as indicated in diagram sub-
mitted, be approved at a cost not to exceed $250.00. Motion was 'duly made, seconded
and carried that the recommendation of ~__haRe~rea~m Commission be accepted.
Communication was received from t~e~reati~n Commission recommending the installation
of Alow signs at the intersection of Circle Court and Orange Avenue and between the
street car tracks and the park on Orange Avenue. Motion was duly made, seconded and ~::~
carried that the recommendation of theE~creatim Commission be accepted. The City
Attorney was instructed to draw up the necessary resolution.
Communication was received from the Recreation Commission recommending that bids be
called for the re-surfacing of the tennis courts at Orange Avenue Memorial Park. Motio~
was duly made, seconded and carried that the recommendation of the Recreation Commission
be accepted. The City Attorney was instructed to draw'up the necessary resolution.
Communication was received from the Recreation Commission with reference to Sea;Scout
Troop 76 of the Lions Club request for a site on city owned beach property for a club
building. This communication was referred to the Harbor Committee.
· Communication was received from the Works Engineer requesting authorization to make a
drainage survey from E1 Camino Real near Brentwood to Lindenville. Motion was duly
made, seconded and carried that the request of the Works Engineer to make this survey
be granted.
Communication was received from :the Works Engineer with reference to use of ~an
Francisco Water Department easement for road way purposes. The Works Engineer was
instructed to check' into this matter with the various property owners along this
right-of-way.
Communication was received from Mayor Burgess o~ Menlo Park advising that a meeting of
Mayors and Managers of the Peninsula cities would be held in Menlo Park August 5th, for
the purpose of discussing sales tax, and asked that the Mayor or representative be
present at this meeting. Mayor Ferko stated he would be unable to attend and asked if
any of the Councilmen could attend. Councilmen Sani and Elder stated they would attend

Chief of Police Belloni advised he had appointed John H. Gorwig guard at Armour and
Co. and Reno G. Raffaelli as special officer for .City Park and Playground. Motion
was duly made, seconded and carried that the appointments be confirmed, with no
remuneration from the City.'

Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that these cancellations be approved.
Building Inspector Rozzi recommended that the salsry of Nello Certiberi, Assistant
Building. Inspector, be increased from $265.00 to $285.00 per month. Motion was duly
made, seconded and carried that the Assistant Building Inspector's salary be in-
creased to $285.00 per month.
Application for general business license was received from ~cott-Burr Stores Corp.
Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that this license be granted.
Communication was received from the Atlas Realty Co. making application for permit to
construct single ~amily dwellings in Francisco Terrace. Motion was duly made, seconded
and Carried that same be referred to the Planning Commission.
Communication from the Superintendent of 'Streets addressed to Councilman Cortesi,
with re~erence to various expenditures approved by the City Council w~i~h,were not
budgeted, was read. Same was ordered filed.
Pegmission to erect a neon sign at the corner of Linden Avenue and Canal Street was
requested by the Starlite Theatres Corp. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried
that permit to erect this sign be granted.
Commu~igation was received from H~nson Bros. requesting permit to move a house from
Grand Avenue to a lot on Armour Avenue between Bayshore Boulevard and Linden Ave.
Motion was du~.made, seconded and carried that this request be granted.
Notice w4s received from the State Board of Equalization advising that On ~ale General
Liquor License had been issued to Paul Fleming, Jim Laricchia and Fred Kotoff, 599
Orange Avenue. Same was ordered filed.
Communications were received from the following, requesting advertisements in their
Labor Day Editions: Labor Review, Labor Herald and Organized Labor. Motion was
duly made, seconded and carried that any advertising to be done by the city be confined
to San Mateo County publications and therefore the requests mentioned be denied.
A bill of sale conveying title of the parking meters ko the City was received from
the Duncan Meter Corp. Same was ordered filed.
Communication was received from the Controller of the State of California enclosing
copies of form of report which was required to be made out and submitted to the State
Controller. This communication requested that the City Council designate some official
to prepare and submit this report. City Clerk advised that Messrs. Schweinirig, Peck
and htmeelf had attended meeting at San Mateo at which representatives fr°m the State
Controllers office had explained how this report should be made out. As details in
the makin~ o~ this report had ~o be furnished by the Works Engineer, Superintendent of
Street and City Clerk, resolution was introduced by Councilman Elder designating City
Clerk, Daniel J. Hyland, as the officer whose duty it would be to prepare the annual
report. This resolution was adopted by the unamlmous vote of all members of the City
Council.
Three copies each of change orders covering changes in contract amounts for the Fire
and Recreation Buildings were received from William Henryj~owe asking that same be
signed by the Mayor and one copy of each forwarded to the contractor and architect.
Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that the Mayor be empowered to sign these
papers.
John Mangini, Humane Officer, submitted his resignation effective August 15th. This
matter was laid over for further:consideration.
Reports for the month of July were received from the Fire'.DepaPtment, Building Inspector,
Department of Public Health & Welfare, and Humane Officer. Annual reports w~re re-
ceived from .the Recreation Commission and Auditor Gordon Rowe. Same were ordered filed.
Claims in the amount of $10,006.39 were submitted to the Finance Committee for approval.
On motion duly made, seconded and carried all cla~Ts as submitted were ordered paid.
As the new Planning Commission ordinance went into effect July21st,.Mayor Ferko
submitted the following names for appointment to the Planning Commission effective
AugUst lst: 1 year term; J. Bracco, A. R.. Zanetti, H. Schaur, E. Barrett, F. Lautze.
3 year term; V. Robinson. & year term; H. Yen%uti. Motion was duly made, seconded
and carried that the.appointments as submitted by the Mayor be confirmed. Mayor Ferko
commended Andrew Rocca and Edward Kauffman for the goo~ work they h&d done as members
of the Planning Commission.
Mayor Ferko explained the Disaster Act and stated a committee for South San Francisco
would be formed. He appointed H. Venturi as Chairman to organize such a committee

Councilman Sani introduced a resolution providing that the City enter into
contract with the South San Francisco Scavenger Co. for the exclusive right to
collect garbage in the City and providing certain regulations for the use of the
City dump. This resolution was adopted by the unanimous vote of all members of the
City Council,
Councilman Corteai introduced a resolution confirming Reassessment Resolution of
Intention No. 1220, Railroad Avenue Sewer- This resolution was adopted by the
~animous vote of all members of the City Council.
Councilman Cortesi seated that various trucks passing through the City were getting
the streets very dirty and he suggested that same be washed off with the use of the
Fire Department equipment. Mayor Ferko suggested that the Street and Fire Commission-
ers get together on this matter.
Councilman Cortesi suggested that new streets to be named in the City be named after
home boys who had lost their lives in the recent w~r, After some discussion this
matter was laid'over.
Mr. Eisenbrey, a resident of Brentwoed, addressed the Council suggesting that the
contemplated dwellings inFrancisco Terrace be checked into thoroughly before a
permit is issued for the construction of same. The Mayor suggested that the Brentwood
Club have a representative present at the next Planning Commission meeting.
On motion of Councilman Sani, seconded b~ Councilman Elder, and regularly carried, the
meeting was adjourned to Wednesday, August ~$h, at 7:30 p.m.
