Absent: Mayor Leo Ferko
Motion was made.by Councilma~ Sani, seconded by Councilman Cortesi~~ that Councilman
Eld&r act as Mayor due to the absence of Mayor Ferko. This motion was re~:larly
carried.
The City Clerk having forwarded copy of the minutes of the meetings of September 7th,
15th and 16th, to all members of the City Council, Acting Mayor Elder asked if any
errors or omissions were noted. There being none the minutes were approved as
submitted.
CAUTION SIGNAL -
SOUTHWOOD:
Communication ~as received from the Divisioo of HighwAys answering City's letter ~th
reference to installation of a caution signal on E1 Camino Real near Orange Avenue.
The Division of Highways advised they were unwilling to make this installation. Motion
was duly made, seconded and carried that copy of the Division of Highways' letter be
sent to the Southwood Women's Cl~ and that the Chief of Police check into this matter.
CHESTNUT AVENUE~.PLANS: Works Engineer Randlett submitted plans and specifications for the paving of Chestnut
Avenue. Same were referred to the City Attorney for necessary resolution.
~CTRIC DAMAGE
STATION NO. 2:
The matter of responsibility for damage to radio and electric service at Station No. 2,
laid over from previous meeting, was brought up. This matter was referred to the Fire
Chief and City Attorney.
SCHOOL PROPERTY -
!;~RTIN~ SCHOOL:
The matter of granting the school permission to make fill on property in Martin ~chool
area was brought up. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that the school be
allowed to make this fill and that the 'Vorks Engineer arrange details with all concerned
without cost to the City.
NOISE ON A STREET:
Petition complaining of noise and speed on A Street, which was referred to the Chief
of Police, was brought up. This matter was laid over for further consideration.
FIRE SITE - BI~I BURI:
Subject of Fire Station location in Buri Burl S~division and purchase of site for same
was brought up. As offer of the Buri Burl Homes, Inc. expired September 1st, motion
was duly made, seconded and carried that the City offer Burl Burl Homes, Inc. $38~6.80
for lots I and 2 in Block l, Burl Buri; this price being the original ~,ount asked by
the Burl Buri Homes, Inc.
CENTENNIAL CELebRATION: Communication was received from the San ~Eateo County Centennial Committee requesting
that a representative from the City attend parade on October 15, 19AS at 6:00 p.m.
Acting Mayor Elder appointed Mayor Ferko as a rep~esgntativeand stated he would attend
in the event Mayor Ferko was unable to attend.
GUERIN BUILDING:
Request was received from Grace F. O~uerin for a permit to erect a building on her
.prgperty on East Grand Avenue at an estimated cost of $15,000. Notion was duly made,
seconded and carried that permission be granted provided all building regu~tions were
complied with.
DRAINAGE -
ORANGE AV~UE:
Communication was received from Bamberger and'Reid requesting that the City install a
12" drainage pipe on the Primary School site at C Street and Orange Avenue. This matter
was referred to CounciLman Cortesi and Uorks Engineer Randlett to ascertain who would
be responsible for the installation of the drainage pipe.

S. F. & SAN MATEO:
Communication 'was received from Frederick Paterson, ~ounty Executive, enclosing copy
of letter which he had addressed to Mayor ~obinson of San Francisco referring to the
modernizing of street car facilities operating between San Francisco and San Mateo.
Same was ordered filed.
STOP SIGNS - BUMI BURI: Communication was received from Chief of Police Belloni requesting the installation of
stop arterials at certain intersections in the Buri Burl Subdivision. This matter was
referred to the City AttOrney for the necessary resolution.
FIRE CHIEFS
CONVENTION:
Communication was received from the Pacific Coast Inter-Mountain Assn. of Fire Chiefs
advising that annual conference would be held in Sacramentm October 31st to November
3rd inclusive, and urged the City to send Fire Chief ~elte to this convention. Motion
was duly made, seconded and carried that Fire Chief Welte be designated as representative
of the City at the Fire Chiefs Conference to be held in ~acramento, October 31st to
November 3rd, inclusdve.
AIELLO APAR~{~{TS:
Communication was received from Louis Aiello requesting permission to convert building
at 1052-5~ Grand Avenue into a four apartment building. As this request conflicted
with the Zoning Ordinance and had been denied by the Planning Commission and City
Council on a previous occasion, this co~mmicati~n was ordered filed.
COLUMBUS DAY PARADE:
Comm~micatL°n was received from the Business Men's Association extending an invitation
to the City Council to participate in Col~mbus Day Parade to be held October 2~th, 19dS
at l:O0 P.m. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that same be accepted and that
the City ddsplay flags on the streets frora October 1Lth to October 2~th, inclusive, for
the Columbus Day celebration.
RECREATION COMMISSION
APPLICATION:
Application for the position of Superintendent of. Recreation was received from '~lliam
J. Procter. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that this application be
referred to the Recreation Commission.
BUSINESS LICENSES:
Application for amusement devices license was received fro~ the South San Francisco
Novelty Co. at 6~5 Pine Terrace, South San Franc~.sco. Motion was duly made, seconded
and carried that same be granted subject to the finger printing of the applicant Ernest
Mirati.

Communication was received from Gordon Rowe requesting increase in salary compensation
to $~00. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that this request be denied.
Communication was received from the Superintendent of Streets recommending the follow,lng

Also recommending the temporary appointment of two employees. Motion was duly made,
zeconded and carried that the recommendation of the Superintendent of Streets be
accepted and the Personnel Board so notified.
Communication addressed to Councilman Cortesi was received from Ed~vard J. ~,Veckerle
asking that the street in front of his place be repaired and that a light be installed
on this street. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that the improvement of this
street be taken care of~and a light installed.
G. L. Rozzi, Building Inspector, requested permission to attend the Pacific Coast
B~ilding Officials Conference to be held in Sacramento October llth to 15th. ~otion
was duly made, seconded and carried that Mr. Ro~zi be granted permission to attend
this convention with expense allowance.
Edward R. Bacon Co. submitted an offer to purchase the old Austin-'~stern Patrol ~weeper
for the s~m of ~1250. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that this offer be
rejected.
Communication was received fro~ the City Park Improvement Club complaining of dogs
running wild dn Mayfair Village and requested that the Pound M~ster be pr6vided with
necessary facilAties to enforce the city ordinance. This comm~mication was ordered
filed.

Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that Steve T. Bildhauer be appointed to the

Comm~ication was received from the Peck's Subdivision Improvement Club calling attention!
to the fact that cars travel at an excessive speed on Randolph and Cha~nan Avenues; also
suggesting that a speed limit sign be installed at t~e intersection of Randolph and
Chapman Avenues and RandolPh and Bayshore ~ighway. This letter was referred to the
Chief of Police for his recommendation.
Communication was received from the Librarian setting forth increase in volumes during
the fiscal year 19~7-A8. This communication was ordered filed.

Atlas Realty Co. for an entrance to their tract provided the service road be at least
~0 feet wide. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that the recommendation of
the Planning Commission be accepted.

of the North Side of Baden Avenue. This matter was referred to the City Attorney.
Communication was received from the Planning Commission recommending the granting of
use hermit to William R. Martin for the cmustruction of block fence at 203 Carmelo Lane.
Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that the recommendation of the Planning
Commission be accepted.
Communication was received from the Planning Commission recommending the granting of

Communication was/from the Planning Commission recommending the granting of variance
permit to J. O. Lyle allowing for a 3 foot set-back instead of the required A foot
set-back at 533 Palm Avenue. Motion ~as duly made, seconded and carried that
recommendation of the Planning Commission be accepted.
Communication.was received from the Works Engineer recommending that the proposed
cleaning of ditch between E1 Camino Real and the railroad tracks be postponed until
the extension of Spruce Avenue is decided. Notion was duly made, seconded and
carried that the recommendation of the ~rks Engineer be accepted.
Reoorts for the.month of August were received from the Chief of Police and City Judge;
reports for the month of September were received from the Fire Department and Building
Inspector. Motion was duly mmde, seconded and carried that same be approved as
submitted.
Report was submitted by F~nil Stein, Inspector for the Department of Public Health,
with reference to condition of dwelling at 233 Aspen Avenue, Mr. ~lter Steward. This
report was referred to the City Attorney for his opinion.
Claims in the amount of $~0,~09.95 were submitted to the Finance Committee for approval.
On motion duly made, seconded and carried all claims as s~mitted were ordered paid.
Communication was received from Buri Buri Homes, Inc. with reference to the vacating
of easement in Buri Burl Subdivision. This matter was referred to the City Attorney.
Councilman Sani introduced a resolution providing that the city enter into an agreement
with the State of California for the relocation, rearrangement or removal of facilities
as the improvement.or construction of state highways in the city be required. This
resolution was adopted by the unanimous vote of all members of the City Council present.
Councilman Cortesi introduced a resolution amending Section 1 of i~ule VI of the
Personnel Rules and Regulations. This resolution was adopted by the unanimous vote of
all members of th~ City Council present.
Councilman Cortesi brought up the matter of age limit for Strset Department employees.
He sugEested that the age limit be set at from 21 to A5 years. Th& City Attorney was
instructed to prepare the necessary resolution providin~ for this age limit.
Councilman Sani brought up the matter of refund of taxes collected on liquor licenses.
City Clerk was asked to prepare list of those entitled.to refund.
A number of residents of Hayfair Village were present st the meeting and complained of
the traffic on the street leading from '~st Orange Avenue past Mayfair Village to the
Starlite Theatre. This matter was referred to the Chief of Police. The City Clerk
was instructed to write to the Starlite Theatre asking if something could not be done
toward the regulating of traffic on this street.
On motion of Councilman Sani, seconded by Councilman Boid~ and regularly carried, the
meeting was adjourned to Monday, October 18, 19A8 at 8:00 p.m.
