The meeting w~s called to order by Mayor Ferko at 8:00 p.m.
.The City Clerk having forwarded copy of the minutes of the previous meeting to all
members of the City Council, Hayor Ferko asked if any errors or omissions were noted.
There being none the minutes were approved as submitted.
FIRE SITE - ~URI BURl:
Communication was received from the Buri Buri Homes, Inc. accepting the City's offer
pf $3,8A6.80 for lots i and 2 in block i Buri Burl. Motion was duly made, seconded
and carried that the City purchase lots i and 2 in block 1 Buri Burl for the sum of
$3,8A6.80 and building to be erected thereon to confor~ with existin2 architectural
design.
~'~'STREET - CO~PLAINTS: .Chief of Police Belloni'reported that the traffic conddtion complained of On the 100
block of "A" Street had been corrected. This report from the ~ief of Police was
ordered filed.
MUSINESS LICENSE -
SIDh~]Y NILLER:
Chief of Police Belloni and Health Inspector Schlamm reported having investigated the
application of Sidney S. Miller for business located at 511 Bayshore Highway and
recommended the granting of this license. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried
that business license be granted to Sidney S. Miller for Pet Supplies Delivery~ Service
at 511 Bayshore Highway.
DRAINAGE PIPE - "C" ST.:The matter of request from the South San Francisco Unified School District to install
a 12" drainage pipe on the school site at "C" Street and Orange Avenue was taken up.
Councilman Cortesi stated he had checked into this matter with school Superintendent
Cherry and they had reached an agreement that the school and the city would each pay
half the expense of installation of this pipe which would total $425.00. Eotion was
duly made, seconded and carried that the city pay half of the expense of this install-
ation, or approximately $212.
USED CAR SALES
LICENSE:
Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that the request for used car sales license
from E. Ballard and ~. O. Cummings be denied.
STAHLITE THEATRE ROAD:
Communication was received from the San Francisco Drive-In Theatre Corp. in answer to
the City's letter regarding traffic conditions on road between "?est Orange Avenue and
the Starlite Theatre. They advised that a special policeman would regulate traffic
~during the peak hours and road signs had been placed on this road. Th~.s communication
was ordered filed.
SOU~'~OOD CO~gRCIAL
'TRACT - I~PROV~,~NTS:
Co~nunication was received from the Superintendent of Streets advising that the street
improvement in Southwood Commercial Tract had been completed according to plans and
specifications and recommended the acceptance of same. Communications were received
from the Pacific Gas & Electric Co., with reference to the street lighting system, and
G. ~. ?~illiams Co. enclosing deed conveying the street lighting system to the City.
Motion was ~ly made, seconded and carried that the recommendation of the Superintendent
of Streets be accepted and that the deed from G. W. Williams Co. be referred to the
City Attorney.
CITY PARK ~INP. CLUB -
DANCE:
Request was received from the City Park Improvement Club for permission to hold a dance
at the American Legion Hall, Saturday November .27, 19~8. Motion was duly made, seconded
and carried that permission be granted.

Communication was received from the Labor Herald asking the city to place ad in their

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS -
OBJECTIONABLE COMICS:
Communication was received from the Knights of Columbus enclosing petition signed by
various organizations on the topic objectionable comics and requesting that the City do
all possible to f~rther this cause. This ~mtter was referred to the Recreation Commissi~
for its recommendation.
NAVY. DAY PROCI~I,[ATION:
Communication was received from the Twelfth N~val District asking that the Mayor issue a
proclamation for the observance of Navy Day, October 27th, 19A8. ~ayor Ferko asked the
various newspaper representatives present to publish this proclamation.
STATE COMPENSATION:
Com~unicaticn was received from the State Compensation Insurance Fund advisin5 that the
City would not be entitled to any dividend on their policy due to n~merous injuries durir
the past year. This com~unication was ordered filed.
~ATIONAL TRAFFIC
SAFETY CONTEST:
Communication was received from the National Safety Council advising of National Trsffic
Safety Contest and asking that s representative be appointed by the City. Mayor Ferko
appointed t~e Chief of Police as Contest ~.:smager and referred the co~mnunicstion to the
Chief of Police.

M~T!~C:
A notice was received from the Peninsula Division of the League of California Cities
advisin? of meeting to be held in San Jose, October 21st. City Clerk was ~nstructed to
contact heads of the departments to ascertain who wished to attend this meeting.
AI{ERIC~Y RED CROSS -
DISASTER:
Com~aunication was received from the Disaster Relief Committee of the American Red Cross
advising of meeting to be held in San ~{ateo October 19th. The Liayor sta~ed he ~0uld
contact Mr. Vcnturi, Chairman of the Disaster Committee, regarding attending this meetin~
and appointed the Fire Chief to also attend.
The City Clerk was instructed to contact the League of California Cities with reference
to disaster material.

Communication was received frOm the Edward R. ~acon Co. submitting offer of $1,500.00 for
the old Austin-~stern Patrol Sweeper. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that
the City advertise for offers for the sale of this sweeper.

CITY OF SAN BRUNO -
TREAtmENT PLANT:
Co~mmunication was received from the City of San Eruno outlining their understanding
of aewage treatment plant surveying, draftinM and engineering services. Motion was
duly made, seconded ~nd carried that the City of San Bruno be informed that the City
of South San Francisco was in accordance with conditions as outlined in their letter
of October 5th pertaining to sewage treatment plant.

FAIRWAY DRIVE:
Communication was received from the Superintendent of Streets recommending the install-
ation of stop signs at the Southeast corner of S. Fairway Drive and ~Y. Orange Ave~e
and the Northwest' corner of Fairway Dr. and ,test Orange Avenue. Notion was duly made,
seconded and carried that the recommendation of the Superintendent of Streets be
accepte~.
CITY PARK I~fPROVEMENT
CLUB - TRI~INGS PICK
UP:
Communication was received from the City Park Improvement Club expressing ~ppreciation
of the garclen trimmings pick-up service as devised b~ the City. This communication was
ordered filed.
STREET LIGHTS -
2ND STREET:
Communication was received signed by various residents o£ 2nd St. requesting larger
street lights on 2nd Street. This matter was referred to the Superintendent. of Streets.
SALARY INCREASE -
OFFICER. ANDERSON:
Com~nunication was received from the Chief of Police recommenddng increase in salary
of Special Police Officer Lester Anderson from $26~ to $275. per month effective October
1st, 19A8. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that the recommendation of the
Chief of Police be accepted.
RECREATION CO~g~ISSION
PROGRAM:
PETER NAIRANI: INJURY:
Communication was received from the Recreation Commission reco~aending that Councilman
Chas. K. Elder be appointed to serve and act as master of ceremonies at the program
for the dedication of the Recreation Buildings. Councilmen Elder and Sani were appointed
to act on ~is committee. City Clerk was instructed to notify the Recreation Commission
accordingly.
Communication was received from Attorney Thos. L. Bocci advising that he was in a position
to settle claim of Peter Nairani with the insurance carrier provided the City would re-
lease all claims against this carrier. City Attorney Coleberd recommended that nd
action be taken until such time as he was able to contact the insurance carrier of the
interested parties. The City Ettorney was asked to have his report ready for next
meeting so that the case might be cleared up.
PLANNING CO~ISSION
LARRY L'~SE:
Co~aunication was received from the Plannin~ Commission recommending the reappointment
of Hr. Larry ~se as Planninm Advisor for the ensuing year. Motion was duly made,
seconded and carried that the recommendation of the Planning Commission be acce~ted and
that Mr. ~se be appointed Plannin~ Advisor for the ensuing year at the present salary.

STREETS & HIGF~AYS:
Communication was received from the Planning Commissionadvisin~ that hearings on the
master plan of streets and highways amendment.would be held at the regular Planning
Commission meetings in November and December. This communication was ordered filed.

BUSINESS LICENSES:
Commlmication was received from the Planning Co~mission recommending the granting of a
variance permit to G. Gioffre. Hotion was duly made, seconded and carried that the
recommendation of the Planning Co~ission be accepted.
Application for a business license to sell Christmas Trees on the lot next to the 12
.Mile House was submitted by H. E. Shawver. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried
that this license be denied as the location was not in the business district.
Application for a license to engage in automobile repair business at 319-Ath Lane was
submitted by Geo. S. Jackson. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that license
be granted.
Application for license to engage in the florist business at 311 Linden Avenue was sub-
mitted by Poletti & Zapletal. ~otion.was duly made, seconded and carried that this
license be granted.

City Clerk and City Treasurer. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried that same be
approved as submitted.

Councilman Elder introduced a resolution directing the Plannin~ Commission to hold a
public hearing with reference to zoning land on the northside of Baden Avenue. This
resolution was adopted by the una ~nimous vote of all members of the City Council.
I~SOLUTION NO. 138A Councilman Sani introduced a resolution providing £or the installation of stop signs

Councilman Boido introduced a resolution making application to the public Utilities
Commission for permit to constn~ct and maintain a public street over the right-of-way
of the Southern Pacific Co. This resolution was adopted by the unanimous vote of all
members of the City Council.
Counci~aan Cortesi introduced a resoluti~m ~J~'I:tLa~ Uo~mber 15th, 19~8 as time for hear-
ing any objections to the order vacating a portion of SpKuce Avenue in High School Park
Terrace. This resolution was adopted by' the unanimous vote of all members of the City
Council.

ADJCU~,~E~T:
Mayor Leo Ferko brought to the attention of the pesple the necessity of voting yes on
Proposition C - the proposed ~uenc~uent to the Civil 3ervice Ordinance taking the
heads of the departments Jut of Civil Service as heads of the departments; also
Proposition No. 18, constitutional amendment ~roviding for the reimbursement to the
cities from the State for taxes lost through exemptions granted bY the cities. He
stated a "Yes" vote on these two propositions would be a benefit to the City.
L~rs. Scholler of ~ayfair brought up the matter of the owner of South Canal Street.
T~is matter was referred to the City Attorney for a title investigation.
On motion of Councilman Elder, seconded by Councilman Sa~i and re~u!arly carried the
meeting was adjourned to MondaM, November l, 19A$ at 2:00 p.m.
