Elder, Leo Ferko, Adolph Sani, Emilio Cortesi. The meeting was called to order at 8:10 p.m. by Mayor Ferko. The City Clerk having forwarded copy of the minutes of the previous meeting to all Councilmen, Mayor Ferko asked if there were any errors or omissions. There being none the minutes were approved as submitted. Mayor Ferko called Peter Mairani before the Council and asked Fire Commissioner, Councilman Elder to present Peter Mairani with a twenty year retirement badge. Councilman Elder passed this honor to Mayor Ferko as the Mayor was retiring from office. Mayor Ferko then presented a retirement badge to Peter Mairani for twenty years of service in the Fire Department. Mr. Mairani responded, expressing appreciation for the honor bestowed upon him. Mayor Ferko asked if the~e were any verbal protests against the improvement of Hillside Boulevard. There were none. Written protest was submitted by Mr. L. D. McLeod. Councilman Cortesi suggested that this matter be laid over and moved that the matter be submitted to the City Manager, Works Engineer, and City Attorney. Councilman Sani seconded this motion and same was regularly carried. Commnnication was received from the Works Engineer advising tha~ the Board of Supervisors had agreed to participate in the improvement of Hillside Boulevard between Paradise Valley and the westerly limits of Sterling Terrace No. 5. However, as one half of the street in this area was in the city and one half in the county the Board of Supervisors recommended that the city incorporate that portion that is in the county. Councilman Cortesi stated he ~as not in favor of spending money on Hillside Boulevard at this time as he felt that money should be spent on Spruce Avenue instead. After some discussion this matter was laid OVer. Communication was received from the Works Engineer recommending that the sub- divider of Sterling Terrace No. A be released from the $5000.00 bond guaranteeing connecting street between the ends of Larch Avenue, Hemlock Avenue and Hillside Boulevard, as the final map of Sterling Terrace No. 5 had been accepted. It was regularly moved, seconded, and carried that the recommendation of the ~rks Engineer be accepted and the specified bond released. C~%munication was received from Chief of Police Belloni advising that Officer Kenneth Ekstrom had comoleted his probationery period of one year commencing April 16 and recommending that his wage be increased to $275.00 per month. Motion was duly made, seconded and carried, that the recommendation of the Chief of Police be accepted. Communication was received from the Recreation Co~mnission advising that after a careful study of the Brentwood playground area there was not sufficient space to accommodate a building as proposed by the Brentwood Club. This communication was ordered filed. Communication was received from the Planning Commission approving the tentative map of Parkway Terrace No, 2. Motion was duly made, seconded, and carried that the recommendation of the Planning Commission be accepted and the tentative map of Parkway Terrace No. 2 be approved. Communication was received from the Planning Commission approving the tentative map of Rancho Burl Burl No. 3 subject to certain conditions. Motion was duly made, seconded, and carried that the recommendation of the Planning Commission be accepted and that the tentative map of Buri Burl No. 3 be approved. Communication was received from the Civil Service Employees' Association of South San Francisco requesting a meeting with the City Council to discuss various matters. Councilman Sani state~ it was his understanding that this meeting was to be called at a later date. Fireman John Marchi was present and asked that this meeting be postponed to a later date. Therefore, the communication was ordered filed. Communication was received from the Junipero Serra Post No. 7216, V.F.W. request- ing permission te sell poppies on the city streets for four days during the month of May. Motion was duly made, seconded, and carried that permission be granted. Communication was received from R. F. Maxwell of the Pan American ~orld Airways System commending Pound Master A1 Silva for his cooperation in locating a dog which had been lost from its cage from an aircraft ~hich had just arrived from Honolulu. City Clerk was instructed to send copy of this letter to Mr. Silva and then file the communication. Communication was received from the American Legion, Redwood City Post 105, invi- ting the Mayor and members of the City Council to dedication ceremonies of the new American Legion home at Redwood City to be held Sunday, April 30 at 1:30 p.m. This communication was ordered filed. Peter A. Selaya and Francis T. McDonnell submitted an application to engage in the business of ~istribution of pickled eggs tO bars and cafes. As the distri- bution point was located outside of the business district, this application was ordered filed. As the distri- bution point was located outside of the business district, this application was ordered filed. 454 FORD PICK-UP FIRE DEPARTMENT Communication was received from Fred Lautze advising that he had obtained a new pi~k-up to replace the one purchased by the Fire Department a few months ago. This communication was ordered filed. MONTHLY REPORTS: Reports for the Month of March were submitted by the Police Department, City Judge, Fire Department, Building Inspector, Public Library, Poundkeeper, and Health Department. Motion was duly made, seconded, and carried that same be accepted and filed. CLAIMS: Claims in the amount of $1A,950.O5 were approved by the Finance Committee. On motion duly made, seconded, and carried, claims as submitted were ordered paid. HEALTH PROCLAMATION: Communication was received from the Mental ~ealth Society of San Mateo County asking the Mayor to issue a proclamation designating the week of April 23-29 as Mental Health Week. Mayor Ferko submitted proclamation designating the week of April 23 through April 29 as Mental Health ~¥eek. P.G. & E. FRANCHISE: ORDINANCE NO. 296 PARKING SOUT~[.';OOD AND BHENTWOOD: Checks were received from the Pacific Gas & Electric Company in the amounts of $7905.03 and $A503.38 covering gas and electric franchises for the year 19A9. These checks were placed in the General Fund. An ordinance providing for angle parking of automobiles in the Southwood and Brentwood business districts was read by title and approved as the second reading. This ordinance was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Councilmen Boido, Elder, Ferko, Sani, and Cortesi. Noes, Councilmen none. Absent, Councihaen none. R~OLUTION NO. 1530 BURI BURI SIGNALS: SIGNALS BRENT!'DOD: ANDERSON DEATH: 'ADJOURN~ENT: Councilman Sani presented a resolution declaring the construction and in- stallation of the signal system at the intersection of E1 Camino Real and Arroyo Drive completed. This resolution was adopted by the unanimous vote of all members of the City Council. Councilman Cortesi asked what could be done toward arranging for a road at Francisco Terrace which w~ld connect with the highway in order that the state might install traffic signals in this area. He was advised that Mr. ~Dns was not willing to allocate the connecting piece of land. It was suggested that the City Manager arrange for a meeting between Mr. Wilms, the City Council and a representative from the Division of Highways. Councilman Cortesi suggested that the City Clerk write a letter of condolence to Mrs. Anderson on the recent death of her husbsnd. The City Attorney stated he would gladly prepare a resolution on this matter. ~ouncilman Cortesi moved, seconded by Councilman Elder that the City Attorney draw up a resolution of condolence to Mrs. Ahderson. This motion was regularly carried. Mayor Ferko stated that the meeting would adjourn out of respect to the late Mr. Anderson. On motion of Councilman Elder, seconded by Councilman Boido and regularly carried, the meeting was adjourned to Tuesday, April 18th at 8:00 p.m. Time of adjournment - 9:00 p.m. Respectfully submitted, City Clerk APPROVED: Mayor
