REGULAR MEETING OF THE CIT~ COUNCIL OF THE

CALL TO ORDER:
MINUTES:
The meeting was called to order at 8:10 p. m. by Mayor Sani.
The city clerk having fo~¢arded copy of the minutes of the previous meeting of
August 28, 1950 to all councilmen, ~yor Smni asked if there were any errors or
omissions. There being none, the minutes were approved as submitted.
SPECI~ OFFIC~
~I~T~:
Communication was received from Chief of Police Belloni requesting cancellation
of the appointment of Matt E. Knighton as special officer. It was regularly
moved, seconded and carried, that the recommendation of the Chief of Police be
accepted and Mr. Knighton's appointment be cancelled.
POLICE OFFICERS
INCREASES:
Communication was received from Chief of Police Belloni advising that Officers
Richard Canziani and Lawrence Olivotti completed their two years service as
police officers September 1st and were entitled to salary increase from $275 per
month to $290 per month. Also, that Officer Silvio Stagnaro completed five years
service as police officer September 1st and was entitled to increase in salary
from $290 per month to $300 per month. Councilman k~der moved, seconded by
Councilman Boido that the increases as specified by the Chief of Police be approved.
This motion was regularly carried.
LU~IINI--CALL FORCES:
Communication was received from Fire Chief Welte recommending the appointment of
Mr. Chester guchini to the Call Forces of the Fire Department. It w~s regularly
moved, seconded, and carried, that the recommendation of the Fire Chief be
accepted.
STRA~&fHER FINAL ~'~P:
Communication was received from the Planning Commission approving the final map
of the Strawther Subdivision. As the final map was not completed, this matter
was laid over.
SOUTHERN PACIFIC CO~ANY Communication was received from the Southern Pacific Company applying for a per-
SPUR TRACK--LINDEN AVENUE: mit to construct a spur track across Linden Avenue to provide service to the
International Paint Company. Councilman E~der moved, seconded by Councilman
Boido, that this matter be referred to the Dforks Engineer for checking. This
motion was regularly carried.
SOUND SYSTEM
GOOD N~fS CHAPEL:
Communication was received from D. P. ~fertz, Pastor of Good News Chapel, request-
ing a permit to operate a sound system on an automobile. It was regularly moved,
seconded, and carried, that this matter be referred to the Chief of Police.
AUDITORIUM:
Communication was received from Robert N. Boswell, Pastor of St. Paul's Methodist
Church, approving the suggestion of the Improved OrUer of Redmen for a public
auditorium for the city. This communication was ordered filed, until such time
as other requests may be received.
DANCE-SANTO CHRISTO
SOCIETY:
Communication was received from the Santo Christo Society applying for a permit
to hold a dance Saturday, October 21, 1950 at the American Legion Hall. On
motion of Councilman Cortesi, seconded by Councilman Elder, and regularly carried,
this permit was granted.
BR~IT~¥OOD BOb~ BUILDING:
Communication was received from tke Brentwood Bowl advising they proposed to
erect a building, housing a bowling alley, billiard tables, restaurant, and cock-
t~il lounge, next to the Snide Shoe Company in the Brentwood Subdivision and re-
quested the necessary city license be issued. The question was raised as to
parking space to accomodate such a building, therefore, Councilman Bracco moved,
seconded by Councilman Elder, theft this matter be refer~ed to the Planning Com-
mission. A representative from the Brunswick-Balke-Collender Co. was present
and stated there was parking space in the Brentwood area and it was anticipated
that this space would be used. He also stated he would like thecouncil to give
due consideration to a license for the cocktail lounge. The foregoing motion
was regularly carried.
LIQUOR LICENSES:
Notifications were received from the State Board of Equalization advising of
alcoholic beverage license a~plications from Angelo Colombo and Archie and
Attilio Fregosi. These notifications were ordered filed.
WATFR TANK
CALIFOR2~IA ~TATER SERVICE:
CLAIMS:
Communication was received from the California ~ter Service Company requesting
approval to erect a 50,000 gallon water tank on Lot i Block 19 Sterling Terrace
Subdivision No. 5. Motion was duly made, seconded, and carried, that permission
be granted to erect this water tank.
Claims in the amount of $16,775.12 were submitted by the Finance Committee. On
motion duly m~de, seconded, and carried, claims as submitted were ordered ~oaid.

Communication was received from the Recreation Commission recommending that warn-
ing signs be posted near the flood light meter box at Memorial Park and that
various signs be posted around the recreation buildings. Councilmsn Bracco moved,
seconded by Councilman Cortesi, that the recommendations of the Recreation
Commission be accepted, and this matter be referred to the City Manager and Chief
of Police. This motion was regularly carried.
Communication was received from Mr. Earl O. Coop requesting permission to store
cans and containers on the Jessiman property, Parcel ~7 Zone H Acreage. City
Clerk was instructed to ask Mr. Coop for more information.
Communication was received from the United A. F. L. Committee of San Mateo County
requesting the Mayor to proclaim theperiod of September 8th throuFh Septamber l&th
as Registration Week. Mayor Sani stated he would make this proclamation and asked
Mr. McClung of the Enterprise to give same publicity.
An ordinance requiring all persons holding or occupying appointive offices or
positions in the service of the city of South San Francisco to take and subscribe
to a loyalty oath came up for final reading and was read by title. This ordi-
nance was adopted by the following vote: Ayes, Councilmen Victor Boido, Charles
K. Elder, Adolph Sani, ~milio Cortesi, Joseph Bracco; Noes, Councilmen, none;
Absent, Councilmen, none.
Councilman Bracco introduced a resolution fixing the tax rate for the fiscal
year 1950-51 at $1.76 per one hundred dollars. This resolution was adopted by
the following vote: Ayes, Councilmen Victor Boido, Charles K. Elder, Adolph
Sani, Emilio Cortesi, Joseph Bracco; Noes, Councilmen, none; Absent, Councilmen,
none.
Councilman Bracco introduced a resolution authorizing the purchase of lots Nos. 5
and 6 in Block 126, South San Francisco, from J. G. Walker and authorizing the
Mayor and Clerk to draw a warrant in favor of J. G. Walker in the amount of
$10,0OO in payment of these lots. This resolution was adopted by the unanimous
vote of all members of the council.
Councilman Cortesi introduced a resolution directing the Superintendent of Streets
to install traffic stop signs at the intersections of Palm and I~%nolia Avenues.
This resolution was adopted by the unanimous vote of all members of the c~ncil.
The request of Lobel's Home Furnishings, Inc. for a business license at 216
Cypress Avenue, laid over from previous meeting, was taken up. As this location
now housed a business, CounciLman Bracco moved, seconded by Councilman Cortesi,
that this license be denied. This motion was regularly carried.
The City Manager recommended the approval of the final map of the resubdivision
of certain lots in Francisco terrace, subject to the final approval of the Works
Engineer. Councilman Elder moved, seconded by Councilman Boido, that the recom-
mendation of the City Manager be accepted, and that final m~p of Francisco Ter-
race resubdivision be approved, subject to the final approval of the ~'?orks Engin-
eer.
Councilman Cortesi stated he was at the beach on a Sunday and saw mahy speed
boats traveling at high speed near the swimmers at the beach. He suggested
that a sign be installed to prohibit speed boats from traveling near the swimmers.
The City Manager was asked to see that the necessary signs were installed.
Councilman Cortesi st~ted he had received his regular monthly salary from the
City while he was away on vacation for the past two months and he felt he was
not entitled to same. He therefore wished to donate one month's salary each to
the American Gold Star Mothers and the American Red Cross in Korea. He passed
the checks along to the City Clerk for forwarding to these parties'.
Councilman Elder stated he noticed a hazardous condition near the underpass at
the Southern Pacific Railroad crossing. He stated trucks were parked at this
underpass which hindered traffic. The Chief of Police was asked to check into
this matter.
On motion of councilman F~der, seconded by Councilman Boido, and regularly carried,
the meeting was adj>urned to Friday evening, September 8th at 7:30 p. m.

Absent: Councilman Charles K. Elder.
The meeting was called to order at 7:40 p. m. by Mayor Sani.
Mayor Sani stated that the minutes wm]ld be dispe.nsed with until the next reg~lar
meeting.
City Manager Larwood stated the Brentwood School would like to have a letter from the
council, stating that they will take care of the sewer by the time the school is com-
pleted. The school doesn't want to c~ll for bids unless they have the assurance that
the city vrill have the sewer put in there. Motion was made by Councilman Bracco,
seconded by Councilman Boido, that a letter be sent to the School Board telling them
to ~o ahead, that they ~rill have a sewer at the proper tL~e. This motion was regularly
carri ed.
On motion of CounciLmanBracco, seconded by Councilman Boido, and re~larly carried,
the meetin~ was adjourned to Tuesday, September 12, 1950 at 4:00 p. m.
