CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO
SPECIAL MEETING
MARCH 31, 1999

CALL TO ORDER: 6:00 p.m.
ROLL CALL: Present:
Councilmembers Femekes, Mullin and Penna,
Mayor Pro Tem Matsumoto and Mayor Datzman
Absent: None.
ORAL COMMUNICATION: None
Interview Applicants for Boards and Commissions
Historic Preservation Commission
Housing Authority
Parking Place Commission
Parks and Recreation Commission
The following applicants were interviewed:
Reverend Gary Smith (Housing Authority and Parking Place Commission)
Judith Brown (reappointment to Parks and Recreation Commission)
Tuan Le (Parks and Recreation Commission)
Richard Garbarino (reappointment to Parks and Recreation Commission)
Dorothy Sorensen (Parks and Recreation Commission)
Janine Greenwald (no preference)
Council agreed to consider requests for appointment from Messrs. Robert Masuda,
Joseph Baldi and Frank Gaunt based upon their previous interviews made at the March
17, 1999 City Council Special Meeting.
Discussion and Appointment of Boardmembers and Commissioners
Parks and Recreation Commission:
Motion-Fernekes/Second Penna: To approve the appointment of Judith Brown, Richard
Garbarino and Janine Greenwald to the Parks and Recreation Commission.
Human Resources Director Bower clarified that Ms. Brown and Mr. Garbarino are
appointed to four year terms expiring December 31, 2002. Ms. Greenwald is appointed
to a two year term (completing Commissioner Remedios' term), expiring December 31,
2000.

Housing Authority:
Motion-Mullin/Second-Penna: To approve the appointment of Gary Smith to the
Housing Authority.
Director Bower clarified that Mr. Smith is appointed to a one year term (completing
Boardmember Maltoni's term) expiring March 31, 2000.
Parking Place Commission: No action taken.
Historic Preservation Commission:
Motion-Fernekes/Second-Matsumoto: To approve the appointment of Robert Masuda
to the Historic Preservation Commission.
Director Bower clarified that Mr. Masuda is appointed to a 18 month term, expiring
December 31, 2000.
Council further discussed the following issues:
Status of Parks and Recreation Commissioner Lura Sellick
Re-recruitment for Parking Place Commission
Appointments to Historic Preservation Commission and contacting current
Commissioners for their input
Contact remaining applicants for possible interest in serving on other Boards or
Commissions
Mayor Datzman stated he will work with Director Bower on the above listed issues and
will report back to Council at the April 14, 1999 City Council meeting, if not before.
ADJOURNMENT:
Motion-Fernekes/Second-Penna: To adjourn the City Council Special meeting at 8:47 p.m.
Unanimously approved by voice vote.
