Mini-Maker Faire Presentation (Rob Wood, Maker-Faire Enthusiast and Pradeep
Gupta, Councilmernber),
Rob Wood, Maker Faire Enthusiast, gave a brief presentation detailing the Maker's Faire concept
and its creation of a space for innovation, education, and creativity in communities. Mr, Wood
and Councilman Gupta discussed the logistics and potential benefits of having a small Maker's
Faire in South San Francisco.
5. Sunshine Gardens Park Project (Mike Futrell, City Manager),
City Manager Futrell introduced the item and invited South San Francisco Parks and Recreation
Director Ranals to address the Committee. Director Ranals detailed the benefits of the proposed
multi-use play area in sunshine Gardens Park. Parks Manager Haimovitch detailed the estimated
cost differences between building a "Tot Lot" ($175,000) and a more expansive, age-inclusive
facility ($650,000+). Trustees Bush and Ochsenhirt agreed that the City should move forward
with this project and investigate funding sources, perhaps placing this project on a Wish List for
future endeavors. City Manager Futrell reinforced the caveat that funding restrictions would
deem this project exceedingly ambitious. Councilwoman Normandy suggested that pursuit of the
"Tot Lot" might be most feasible.
6. Review Draft of Multi-Year Agreement to Provide Childcare (Mike Futrell, City
Manager).
This item necessitated review by the School Board and would be discussed at the next meeting.
7. Possible Development of School Surplus Property — Foxridge Site Only (Judy
Bush, Board President and Mike Futrell, City Manager).
City Manager Futrell advised that the Foxridge Site is best suited for a potential workforce
housing development with the intention of improving employee recruitment and retention. He
advised of the possibility of funding such a project by pursuing grants related to affordable
housing for public employees such as teachers and firefighters. Trustee Ochsenshirt noted that
staff should consider requirements such as density regulations that come along with developing
such housing sites. Councilman Gupta replied that this could be an opportunity to use the
Foxridge Site more efficiently. Councilwoman Normandy noted this type of housing is geared
towards short term benefits enabling renters to save money to apply towards future home
ownership.
8. Maintenance of the Orange Park Field (Judy Bush, Board President and Mike
Futrell, City Manager).
Trustee Bush reported that students have requested renovations to the baseball field at Orange
Memorial Park. Parks and Recreation Director Ranals expressed interest in hearing students'
opinions and recommendations.
9. Renovation of the Callero Baseball Field at Baden School (Mike Futrell, City
Manager).
Director Ranals stated that the Baden High School Baseball Field has been evaluated for
improvement and renovations are estimated to cost approximately $720,000. Councilwoman
Normandy requested that a crosswalk and speed reduction measures be taken near the school.
