CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO
PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION
Thursday, June 20, 2017
I. CALL TO ORDER: 7:12 p.m.
A regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission of the City of South San
Francisco was held on Thursday, June 20, 2017 at the Municipal Services Building, 33
Arroyo Drive, South San Francisco, California.
II. ROLL CALL:
Present: Commissioners Battaglia, Camacho, Garrone, Holt, Flores, Lock
and Uy

Director Ranals apologized for the late start of the meeting and due to that requested that
items IX. New Business A. 2017/18 Annual Co-Sponsorship Renewals be moved right
after VII. Presentation Middle School Sports Awards
V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Commissioner Battaglia made a motion to approve the minutes of the April 18, 2017 and
May 22, 2017 Parks and Recreation Commission meetings. It was seconded by
Commissioner Flores and unanimously approved.
VI. CITIZEN PARTICIPATION: None
VII. PRESENTATION: Middle School Sports Awards
Director Ranals introduced Recreation Coordinator Bill Stridbeck who presented the
awards to the athletes. Chair Woo also asked her fellow Commissioners to assist with the
presentation of the awards. Commissioners thanked the students for participating in the
program and the parents for supporting their children and the program. The “Coach of the
Year” award was presented to the late Coach Allan Cantiller’s family. A “Coach of
Honor Award” was also presented to Chuck Taniguchi

VIII. NEW BUSINESS:
A. 2017/18 Annual Co-Sponsorship Renewals
Acting Manager Cullinan reviewed the reports for the co-sponsored groups.
Representatives were then invited to address the Commission. Sylvia Payne from the
Historical Society; Linda Grassy from Italian American Citizens Club; Cathy Burton-
Meza and Woody Rael from the Shetland/Pinto/Mustang Youth Baseball League and
Youth Baseball Association; Juan Bustos, Mario Ayar, Patty Gomez and Edwin
Arrola from the United Youth Soccer League; Jean Feliciano from AARP #3156, and
Manuel Solano from the SSF Aquatics Club. No representative was present from
either the SSF Mother’s Club or from the Ballet Folklorico Infantil de South San
Francisco. The co-sponsored groups reported on the activities of their respective
organizations. Commissioner Flores stated that the Ballet Folklorico’s Cinco de Mayo
performance was very well attended. He also asked if the Commission could be kept
updated on all Co-sponsored group events. Chair Camacho stated that the
Shetland/Pinto/Mustang and Youth Baseball League and Youth Soccer League’s
voice their challenges of not having adequate fields to the City Council. The
Commission was invited to attend the attend the AARP luncheon at the Elks Lodge on
July 7th at 11:00 a.m.
Commissioner Flores made a motion to approve co-sponsorship for 2017/18 for the
following groups: Historical Society, Ballet Folklorico Infantil of South San
Francisco, Italian American Citizen’s Club, Shetland/Pinto/Mustang Youth League,
Youth Baseball Association, Aquatics Club, United Youth Soccer League, and
Mother’s Club. It was seconded by Commissioner Uy and unanimously approved.
B. City-wide Reforestation Program and Urban Forest Master Plan
Acting Parks Manager Mediati reviewed the information provided in the staff report.
He stated the City maintains about 20,000 trees and that in the coming year they will
be planting 117 more. Also staff is currently working on identifying hazardous ones
that need to be removed. Chair Camacho stated her concerns about the trees that are
coming through the sidewalks along Juniper Serra Boulevard. Director Ranals stated
these were old trees. Chair Lock stated if native trees and drought tolerant trees could
be included in the Master Plan. A suggestion by Chair Camacho was to have a co-
sponsorship group sponsor a tree.
C. Proclamation - July is Parks and Recreation Month
Director Ranals reviewed the information provided in the staff report. She stated that
a request was made to the City Manager’s office that Jeri Ward be honored for all her
great service over the years at Orange Park Pool. Director Ranals stated that since
July is Parks and Recreation month it would be fitting to have Jeri Ward presented
with her Certificate of Appreciation at the July 12th City Council meeting.

D. Cancellation of July or August Meeting
Following a discussion, Commissioner Flores made a motion to cancel the July 18th
Parks and Recreation Meeting. It was seconded by Vice Chair Garrone and
unanimously approved.
IX. OLD BUSINESS:
A. Parks Capital Improvement Program Update
Acting Parks Manager Mediati reviewed the information provided in the staff report.
He informed the Commission that there is $8.2 million allocated for the next several
years for park projects contingent on the OPD housing approval, which will be
proposed to the City Council on June 28. Vice Chair Garrone had a question about the
fire break at Sign Hill where would it be strategically placed. Director Ranals stated it
would be placed along the trail.
B. 2017/18/2018-19 Budget Update – New Items
Management Analyst Duldulao reviewed the information provided in the staff report.
She went into detail on the two new items. The first one was the afterschool
expansions at Buri Buri School and Monte Verde School. Buri Buri would increase
their enrollment by 40 students and Monte Verde School would increase their
enrollment by 50 students; these expansions represent a budget increase of
approximately $300K, which hopefully will be covered by revenue. The second item
was to upgrade the Administrative Assistant I position in the Parks and Facilities
Division to Administrative Assistant II.
X. BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE:
Vice Chair Garrone was out of town and did not attend the last meeting. He did state
there was a current vacancy and if anyone knew of someone that might be interested.
Acting Parks Manager Mediati also stated they have a call for entries for the
Beautification Awards.
XI. FRIENDS OF PARKS AND RECREATION:
Commissioner Holt reported that Movie Night went very well and thanked
Commissioners Battaglia and Flores for all their help. He also stated that Commissioner
Lock was stepping down and Commissioner Flores was joining the Friends of Parks and
Recreation. Their next meeting is July 26, 2017
XII. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION:
- Commissioner Holt attended Movie Night and Molloy’s Chili Cook-Off, the Senior
Police Association Breakfast and the Memorial Day Service.
- Commissioner Battaglia attended Movie Night, the State of the City, Molloy’s Chili
Cook-Off, the San Mateo County Fair and the Memorial Day Service. She was very
impressed with how the Memorial Day Service was done and all the hard work done
by staff.

- Commissioner Uy commented how well the Summer Camp was run and the toddler
aquatics program.
- Commissioner Flores attended Movie Night, Earth Day, Senior Police Association
Breakfast, Senior Volunteer Lunch, Streets Alive, State of the City Lunch, Library
Book Sale and the Station 61 Open House. He commented on what a good job Joe
Hunziker did on the Senior Police Association Breakfast.
- Vice Chair Garrone attended Commission Retreat, Movie Night, and the State of the
City Luncheon.
- Chair Camacho attended the State of the City Luncheon, Streets Alive and Earth Day.
She stated staff did a great job on Earth Day. She also stated the turn-out for Streets
Alive was not as well attended as last year; however, programs at the Streets Alive
Event were great. She was also very happy on how well the Commission Retreat
went and how everything is moving forward.
- Commissioner Flores asked how the recruitment was going for the Parks Manager
position. Director Ranals stated they would be making a decision soon.
XIII. ITEMS FROM STAFF:
A. Calendar of Events
Director Ranals noted the General Art Show will be happening on July 14, 15, and the
next Movie Night will be July 21. The movie will be, “Moana”.
B. Administrative Update
Director Ranals reviewed the information provided in the update. She also stated that
Janice Hill will be retiring at the end of June, after 39 years of service to the City.
She also informed the Commission they have named the Dragon. The name chosen is
Yomu.
XIV. ADJOURNMENT:
Chair Camacho adjourned the meeting at 9:45 pm.
