CITY LIAISON SUB-COMMITTEE MEETING
Minutes of the Meeting on Wednesday, April 26, 2017
South San Francisco Unified School District

CALL TO ORDER – 3:32 p.m. by Board Member Patrick Lucy

1.) Public Comments – None
2.) Communication between City Council and SSFUSD
• Members agreed that communication between two entities is improving.
• The relationship should be the model of City governments working together to build So. City.
• There was a miscommunication concerning a District item on a City Council agenda and the District not
being aware of the timing. The item concerned a possible 2017 STEM summer school day program .
District members want to make sure they are present at City meetings to answer questions and provide
information.
• Agreement was reached on the process of notification and also on communication procedures between
District and City staff on new ideas or proposals.
3.) Staff updates
• Buri Buri Elementary School Bond projects are progressing and the site should be completed by
December.
• El Camino High School Friday Night Lights start in September. Community meetings have been held
to provide opportunity for feedback.
• A Community Forum is taking place this evening concerning South San Francisco High School field
lights and residents in the surrounding Francisco Terrace neighborhood.
• Library Director, Valerie Sommers, said City libraries may be able to help increase the number of
parents completing free and reduced meal applications.
• Superintendent Moore thanked City Manager Futrell and Assistant City Manager Marian Lee for
participating in recent meetings.
4.) Use of Community Benefit Funds
• District told the City the Board agreed the funds would benefit students and the community by
improving three possible fields: Buri Buri Elementary School, Westborough Middle School, and
Parkway Heights Middle School.
• District also informed the City of plans to resurface El Camino High School tennis courts this summer
and refresh those at South San Francisco High School.
• Use of benefit funds will be agendized for approval at an upcoming City Council meeting.

5.) Middle school athletic sports programs
• Parks and Recreation Director Sharon Ranals reported that the program went away before 2009 due to
budget cuts and layoffs.
• Currently have a So. City team for students.
o an individual student can play a sport when there are not enough students at a particular
school
o So. City team competes as part of the North Peninsula Recreation League, (NPRL) against
other cities.
6.) Baseball and soccer field conditions
• City will invest $6M in fields owned by the District and wants public acknowledgment that fields will be
open to the public.
• City wants understanding on long term use, based on money invested.
7.) Update on District’s request for Parks & Rec. to offer an extended 2017 STEM summer school day
program (was discussed in #2)
8.) Waiting lists for Parks & Recreation before and after school programs at Monte Verde and Buri Buri
Elementary schools
• Parks and Recreation provided information on capacity, enrollments, and waitlists for:
o Buri Buri Elementary School: 15 spaces on the waitlist to be decided through a lottery,
o Monte Verde Elementary School: 10 spaces open
o Ponderosa Elementary School: 10 spaces open
o Spruce Elementary Schools: 6 spaces open
• Buri Buri Elementary School will have program expanded with one portable, but will still have a waitlist.
• District will let City know whenever pre-K space becomes available for the program.
9.) Biotech Steering Committee Meeting
• Mayor Pradeep Gupta started the committee a few years ago to create a pathway between high
schools and companies.
• Genentech has adopted SSF as its focus.
• Next committee meeting will take place within six weeks.
• District needs to have another Board member replace Trustee Bush on the committee.
10.) Board/Councilmember requests/comments/events
• Spruce Centennial was a remarkable event with old-timers and new community members participating.
• Biotech companies move to SSF due to eco-system/Biotech cluster and new companies find it easy to
navigate.
• Biomed Realty having a groundbreaking of 1.3M square foot building on May 4.
• Superintendent Moore suggested a joint Board/City Council meeting for dialogue on the Community
Benefit Funds.
11.) Future meeting
The next meeting is scheduled for June 12 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.
