does ordain as follows:
SECTION 1. It shall be ~lawful for any person,
firm, or corporation to s~fer or permit any live chickens,
geese, ducks, turkeys, pigeons (except homing pigeons), doves,
sguabs, or similar fowl, or any hares, rabbits, mo~eys, cows,
horses, or goats, or to allow such birds, fowl, or ~i~ls to
be kept or ~intained in or upon any of the areas of land situate
in the City of South ~an Francisco, except as herein othe~ise
provided.
SECTION 2. All such birds, fowl, or ani~ls herein-
above mentioned shall ~der no circ~stances be permitted
r~ at large, but shall at all times be confined within a
suitable enclosure or a house or coop with enclosed runway.
SECTION 3. Such enclos~es, houses, or coops and
r~ways shall at all times be ~intained in a clean and sani-
tary condition, shall be cleaned once a week, or oftener if
necessary, and shall at all times be kept free from offensive
odors ~
SECTION ~. Such enclos~es,houses, or coops ~d
r~ways shall at all times be ~intained in such condition as to
comply with all sanitary rules and regUlations of the City of
South San Francisco and the Health Department of said City.
SECTION 5. No part of any such enclosures, houses,
co~ps, or r~ays shall be less ~than forty (40) feet from any
street, nor less than ten (lO) feet from the side lines of any
adjacent lot, and no such enclosures, houses, coops, or runways

from the effective date of this ordinance file with the ~d,
~i~~ef this City of South San Francisco an application
in accordance with Section 6 of this ordinance. A permit may
be issued to such applicant pursuant to the provisions of said
Section 6. Such permit shall expire one (1) year'after its
date, but may be renewed annually if application for renewal
is made before expiration and if upon inspection by the Health
Department said premises are found to be kept and maintained
in a clean and sanitary condition.
SECTION 8. None of the foregoing poultry, fowl,
or animals shall be hatched, raised, bred, or used for commer-
cial purposes, provided, however, that the City Council of the
City of South San Francisco may, by a special permit, allow
the ralsir~ of chickens for commercial purposes upon any prem-
ises in the City of South San Francisco where the same are now
being used for raisin~ chickens for commercial purposes. Any
person making application for a pe~mlt under this section
shall speci£y~
(a) The location of his premises;
(b) How long said premises have been
occupied by the applicant;
(c) Whether he owns said premises
or not;
(d) How long he has been engaged in
said business upon said premises;
(e)The kind of business he is engaged
in; and
(f) The number of chickens or other fowl
he now has.
SECTION 9. No rooster .over fou~ (4) months old
shall be permitted within the City of South San Francisco,
provided, however, that if the City Council shall grant any

permit to raise chickens upon property now being used for
commercial purposes, it may grant the right to keep roosters
thereon. No permit to maintain roosters over four (4) months
old shall be given if said chickens are being raised and used
commercially for egg purposes only.
SECTION 10. No more than twenty (20) chickens
shall be permitted upon any property when said chickens are
to be used for eating or for providing eggs exclusively for
the family occupying the premises.
SECTION 11. It is hereby declared unlawful to keep
within the limits of the City o~ South San Francisco any
stallion, swine, bull, ram, or billy goat.
SECTION 12. It is hereby declared unlawful and
to be a nuisance for any person to keep more than two (2)
female goats, the milk to be used em~lusively by the family
keeping said goats.
SECTION 13. It shall be unlawful for any person
other than a duly licensed veterinarian to keep or maintain
more than two (2) dogs over the age of six (6) months at any
one place within the corporate limits of the City of South
San Francisco.
All persons owning, keeping, or harboring any dogs
within the confines of the City of South San Francisco shall,
within twenty (20) days from the effective date of this t.~?i~ i.~ ~
ordinance, register the same with the license collector of said City
and procure from him upon payment of the prescribed fees, the
licenses required by the terms~f Section i of Ordinance No, 2S7 of
said City, which ordinance was adopted on the 22nd day of
October, 1946, and is entitled: "AN ORDINANCE IMPOSING A LICENSE
TAX ON DOGS OWNED OR HARBORED WITHIN THE CITY OF SOUTH SAN
FRANCISCO, PROHIBITING THE RUNNING AT LARGE OF ANIMALS WITHIN

THE LIMITS OF SAID CITY AND PROVIDING FOR THE IMPOUNDING
AND SALE OF ANIMALS FOUND RUNNING AT LARGE IN SAID CITY.~'
The owners or keepers of all puppies shall register them
with said license collector within three (3) weeks of their
birth or of the date of their acquisition, as the case may
be. As of the introductory date of this ordinance, persons
owning more than two (2) dogs, including "show" dogs, may
keep and maintain the excess number of "show" dogs for a
period of two (2) years from said date. The owners and
keepers of more than two (2) "non-show" dogs may keep and
maintain the excess number thereof for a period of six (6)
months from said introductory date.
It shall be unlawful to conduct a dog fancier's
business within the corporate limits of said city without
first procuring a permit therefor from the City Council

DOLLARS ($.~-~ ~ ),payable in advance on the 2nd day
of January ~of each year, except that on and after the 1st
day of July of each year, the license fee shall be one-half
.(1/2) of the license fee herein specified.
SECTION 14. Any horse, cow, or goat within the
City of South San Francisco, when not in use, must be kept
inside an enclosure at night. No person shall stake or tie
or leave staked or tied within one hundred (100) feet of any
inhabited residence, any horse, cow, or goat in a vacant lot
without the written consent of the occupant of said residence.
All enclosures, barns and sheds in which there is kept any
horse, cow, or goat, shall be kept in a sanitary condition
and shall comply in all respects with the sanitary rules and
regulations of the Health Department of said city. All manure
shall be removed daily.
SECTION 15. Any violation of the foregoing ordinance.
is hereby declared to be a nulsance and may be abated as such
by the municipal authorities and, in addition, any person
violating any of the provisi~ of this ordinance shall be
dee~ed guilty of a misdeameanor and upon conviction thereof:~',:"'"'~!~
shall be punished by a fine of not less than Twenty-five
Dollars ($25.00) nor more than Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00),
or by imprisonment exceeding six (6) months, or by both
uch fine and imprisonment.! Each day's continuance of
,~violation o£ this ordinance shall be deemed a separate offense
' and shall be punishable accordingly.
SECTION 16. All other ordinances or parts of ordi-
nances in conflict herewith are hereby repealed.
?: SECTION 17. If any section, sub-section, sentence,
.. clause, or phrase of this ordinance is for any reason held
~ to be inapplicable, unconstitutional, or otherwise invalid,
such decision shall not affect the validity of the remaining
portions thereof. The City Council of the City of South San
Francisco hereby declares that it would have passed this
ordinance, and each section, sub-section, sentence, clause,
and phrase thereof, irrespective of the fact that any one
or more other sections, sub-sections, sentences, c~uses,
or phrases be declared inapplicable, unconstitutional or
otherwise invalid.
SECTION 18. This ordinance shall be published by
one insertion in the SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO ENTERPRISE-JOURNAL,
a newspaper of general circulation of said City of South
San Francisco, and shall take effect and be in force upon
the expiration of thirty (30) days after its adoption.
