Respectfully Submitted: Liru Chin, LibraryBoard of Trustees Secretary Valerie Sommer, Library Director Library Director’s Report January 2022 LIBRARY DIRECTOR Preliminary results in the 2021 Community Telephone Survey shows the Library, once again, ranked #2, after the Fire Department, in “satisfaction with City services, programs and facilities.” A summary of the findings will be presented to City Council at the February 12, 2022 retreat. City Manager Mike Futrell highlighted departmental successes in 2021, calling out the Library with: o Library Rocked it in 2021!Over 300,000 library materials were circulated, plus over 38,000 eBooks and eAudiobookschecked out, plus over 14,000 digital library cards issued, plus 225 virtual library programs, o The Summer Learning Challenge reaching 4,664 local youth through free book distributions, weekly take-home family activity kits, and 49 special virtual programs. Library provided tax assistance for 218 households, yielding tax refunds of $264,391. And Council eliminated overdue library fines in 2021! o In addition, we were acknowledged alone or as part of a team in other areas: Library secured over $365,000in grants The City fundraising team raised over $5,000,000to support the Civic Campus! We went back to work, expanding in-person events in P&R, Library, and more. Work commenced in earnest on the new Library and Parks & Recreation (LPR) building and park–we are on time and on budget for a 2023 opening of the full Civic Campus! IT expanded free public Wi-Fi at Grand Library, Boys and Girls Club, Linden Avenue, and in Westborough. The Library operated an in-person Vote Center which was the busiest in SanMateo County State Librarian Greg Lucas has provided a preview of library funding items in the proposed FY 2022-23 budget: o The budget presented by Gov. Newsom contains two significant investments in community libraries. The first is a $5 million increase to the Lunch at the Library program. The intent of this funding is to add more library meal sites and also help create connections and collaborations with other summer meal providers to make sure even more hungry kids get fed during those months when school cafeterias are closed. These funds will also allow the State Library to hire personnel that who can focus exclusively on this program’s success and create and support some of these collaborations. o First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom was a strong advocate for this increased commitment by the state, as her quote in the release indicates: https://us13.campaign- archive.com/?e=__test_email__&u=dacfa367c242711b7d6f73ca7&id=c6e 2d85426 o The governor also includes more than $8 million to continue paying the subscriptions needed to keep the Career Pathways platform for an additional two years after one-time federal funds run out. This three year commitment provides libraries, including the State Library, an opportunity to create stronger partnerships with workforce and economic development agencies. The State Library is investing funds to help spread the word about these terrific online resources. o As you know, this is the opening of budget season in Sacramento. The Governor will revise this spending plan in May based on updated revenue and spending information. Part of our Main Library holiday decorations included a New Year’s Wish Tree. Patrons of all ages wrote their wish on construction-paper ornaments in various shapes (animals, leaves, books and more) and hungthem on the holiday tree branches. Many of the thoughts wished an end to COVID and good health for all. I’ve listed a sampling below: o I’m excited to see family this year. Family we haven’t seen since 2020! o I wish for my puppy back and make sure nobody is allergic to it! o I wish all children and adults get to use, learn & enjoy public libraries. Thank you libraries. o I wish for someone to love me like Owen Wilson loves JLo in their new movie “Marry Me” coming out in theatres this Valentine’s Day. o I wish to bring CHEER to my school and community this week! o I wish COVID will end and people to meet others without having to worry. 2 o I wish for in-person programs coming back to the library very soon. I miss seeing everyone. I wish everyone stay safe while we wait for COVID to end! o I wish to all Masters of Universe –New toy. o I wish for World Peace. o I wish to pass my finals. o I wish that creatures could live on this world in peace and with a clean environment. o To never have to wear a mask again. o I wish in 2022 that COVID is done and I wish that we have a good year. o A safe and fun wedding. o I wish for a kitty cat. o I wish that there were snow o For my little sister to be healthy & my family o I wish for it to be Christmas every day! PROJECT READ & COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTER Community Learning Center-Homework Club (HWC): In November and December CLC continued its regular HWC program including homework assistance and enrichment activities. Enrollment was 63 students but attendance decreased at the beginning of December due to 3 reported close contacts at school. During this time SMC’s Public Health department instructed CLC to have close contact students quarantine for ten days based on their guidelines for our type of out-of-school program. When there is consistent progress made against the pandemic, staff will continue to increase enrollment to the program’s capacity of 72 students. In addition to homework support, students participate in enrichment activities such as Readers Theater, Crazy 8 (Math program), STEM challenges and the Mileage Club. In working with students, staff demonstrate that their resiliency and resourcefulness continues to be strengthened by the Social Emotional Learning and Mental Healthtrainings provided with the support of the California State Library. 7 5th grade enjoying HWC recess/mileage Staff Mario implemented STEM Egg Drop with staff Leslie Challenge. Students testing their creation. 4th grade SEL lesson (learn to connect 4th grade STEM learning about magnets with each other by getting to know them) led by teen intern, Guadalupe. During the second round of Youth Internships, 10 teens from local high schools completed their internship. During their time at CLC, youth participate in trainings focused on career exploration and professional development. When completing the internship at CLC, one of our teens shared the following: “Experiencing setbacks will allow you to grow and overcome them after some time. It is inevitable to learn and gain a lot of knowledge over time as an intern. The experience, as a teen intern, overall is great for strengthening your leadership, social skills, and patience. The teen internship program is perfect for teens that love and want to be around children, while also learning about college and career options. Doing the workshops and journals throughout the internship has helped further develop my metacognitive skills. –Alyssa” 8 3,339 31,79635,135 Dec-21 3,686 33,09036,776 Nov-21 3,837 32,88536,722 Oct-21 4,332 34,38238,714 Sep-21 Main LibraryGrand AvenueCombined Total 4,207 36,41240,619 Aug-21 4,558 Jul-21 35,13739,695 3,991 32,62436,615 Jun-21 3,065 26,87729,942 May-21 1,901 17,13119,032 Apr-21 2,116 15,85517,971 Mar-21 9,3803,477 12,857 Feb-21 752 4,7205,472 Jan-21 Notes: March 2020 - April 2021 Regular Library services minimized; Library facilities closed due to COVID-19. 8,8851,202 10,087 Dec-20 1,792 14,92816,720 Nov-20 LocationMain LibraryGrand AvenueCombined Total 6 12.518.5 1043 ervices # hours S y 912 848426351215 Literac # hours # Attended Age 12-18 November Community Learning Center 93176 1214 959959 # Attended # programs Age 5-11 Youth Totals Collaboration Total CLC Programs Total CLC Adult Programs Youth - CLC Programs Attendance Collaborations Homework ClubTeen Work Exp ProgramUnemployment LabAdult ClassesParent workshopsReferalsFamilias FuertesSSFAE Digital Literacy Support 0 4224 203105183 557 # of Attendees 0 2 18 >5 20 # C hildren 24 553094 115 22 0-5 318 Learners # C hildren 6 18 86504489 # 22 293 Adults Tutors 24 18 4742 117282 000000 # of 530 TOTAL Materials Tutoring TOTAL 76 ervices 0 # # 76 appt S Online 42 242430 118 168105183 Literacy #0 522172 PROJECT READ Hours # Calls in person Volunteer 4 22 6423 3415 November 0 # 2151 # of# of Programs Programs Volunteers TotalTotal Total Adult Programs Family Programs Volunteer Statistics Detail Learning Wheels - SSFLearning Wheels - San BrunoLearning Wheels - ColmaLearning Wheels - Daly CityFamilies for Literacy SSFFamilies for Literacy VirtualBooks and FamiliesTutoringTutorsTrivia VolunteersTC previous months unaccounted 66 598 # hours 77246 22 576598 # hours Literacy Services # Attended Age 12-18 03374 11 Community Learning Center December # Attended # programs Age 5-11 Youth Totals Collaboration Total CLC Programs Total CLC Adult Programs Youth - CLC Programs Attendance Homework ClubTeen Work Exp ProgramUnemployment LabAdult ClassesParent workshops Collaborations ReferalsFamilias FuertesSSFAE/ Digital Literacy Support 000000 0 # of Attendees 0 >5 # C hildren 00 0-5 Learners # C hildren # 00 Adults Tutors 0000000 # of TOTAL Materials Tutoring TOTAL # 0#0 appt Online #000 Literacy Services Hours # Calls in person PROJECT READ Volunteer December 00#0 # of# of Programs Programs Volunteers TotalTotal Total Adult Programs Family Programs Volunteer Statistics Detail Learning Wheels - SSFLearning Wheels - San BrunoLearning Wheels - ColmaLearning Wheels - Daly CityFamilies for Literacy SSFFamilies for Literacy VirtualBooks and FamiliesTutoringTutorsTrivia VolunteersTC previous months unaccounted Attachment #2 Featured Announcements- Confronting History: Stories of Internment Remembering the World War II Incarceration of Japanese Americans February 19, 2022 marks the 80th anniversary of the signing of Executive Order 9066 by President Franklin D.
