CALLTOORDER
The meeting was called to order at 6:00 P.M. via Teleconference meeting (Zoom).
ATTENDANCE
Library Trustees present:Diane Huddleston, Mary Giusti,Liru Chin, Hector Camacho, and
Claire Ramsey.Library staff present: Valerie Sommer, Library Director; Adam Elsholz,
Assistant Library Director; Karla Bourdon,LiteracyServices Program Manager;andElia
Moreno, Administrative Assistant II.
APPROVAL OFMINUTES
Motion to approve the minutes from the August 24, 2021meeting was made, seconded and
approved as presented.

The Board reviewed the Director’s Report.

OLDBUSINESS
New Main Library and Parks & Recreation Community Center Project Update
Steel structure foundation of the new community center project is in process and should be
thcompletedbyOctober7.Subcontractors, including concrete, electrical and rebar, will begin
work onsite after the crane work is completed by the end of October.
Library Reopening Update
Both Main and Grand Avenue Libraries have returned to full operating hours. Face masks
continue to be required inside Library facilities, as well as all other City facilities. In-person
programs will still not be scheduled at the Library until further notice.
NEWBUSINESS
Project Read Trivia Challenge Update – Karla Bourdon, Literacy Program Manager
Literacy Services Program Manager,Karla Bourdon,presented an update on the upcoming
ththTriviaChallenge. The 28Annual Trivia Challenge will be held on Friday, November 19at the
ApprovedattheOctober 26, 2021VirtualMeetingoftheLibraryBoardofTrustees
South San Francisco Conference Center. The planning committee has grown, including members
from the Town of Colma, City of Daly City and the City of San Bruno. So far, Project Read has
received $10,000 in sponsorship donations. With safety and social distancing in mind, the
planning committee anticipatesatotal of 20 teams to compete. CDC recommendations are being
closely monitored in order to ensure the safety of everyone attending the event. Participants and
attendees are required to show proof of vaccination, or a negative COVID-19 test result within
the previous48 hoursbefore the event. Masks will be required at all times, except during eating
and drinking.The IT Department and Library staff islooking into the option of livestreaming the
Trivia Challenge to be able to enjoy the event, virtually.
Citizen’s Academy 2021 Preview – Assistant Library Director Adam Elsholz
The 2021 Fall Citizen’s Academy series has begun. The Main Library will present along with the
thITDepartment, on Monday, October 4beginning at 6:00PM. Proof of vaccination and face
masks are required to participatein person.Assistant Library Director, Adam Elsholz, gave a
preview of the PowerPoint Library staff will present to Citizen’s Academy participants. The
PowerPoint includes photos of Library staff, Library Board and Friends of the Library, Library
statistics, and descriptions of services and programs from each division.
AGENDA BUILDING
NewCommunity Civic Center Campus Update; COVID-19 Response and Recovery Plans;
Citizen’s Academy Recap.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
All Library facilities, including the Main and Grand Avenue Libraries and the Community
ththLearningCenter, will be closed on Sunday, October 10 and Monday, October 11in
observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
The South San Francisco Public Library Book Club meets virtually via Zoom on the third
Tuesday of each month at 6:00 PM. The November book clubselection is My Brilliant Friendby
