CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 6:00P.M. via Teleconference meeting (Zoom).
ATTENDANCE
Library Trustees present:Diane Huddleston, Mary Giusti,Liru Chin, Hector Camacho, and Claire
Ramsey.Library staff present: Valerie Sommer, Library Director; Adam Elsholz, Library
Assistant Director; Karla Bourdon, Literacy Services Program Manager; Han-Ching Wong,
Library Program Manager; Silvia Beas, Literacy Services Coordinator; andElia Moreno,
Administrative AssistantII.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion to approve the minutes fromtheNovember 23,2021meeting was made, seconded and
approved as presented.

OLD BUSINESS
New Main Library and Parks & Recreation Community Center Project Update
Contractors have completed the concrete floor slabs, with the completion of structural steel and
floor slabs, the team is now starting to ship toward the initial installation of the mechanical and
plumbing systems. Library and Parks & Recreation staff are finalizing FF&E selections. Closure
of the sidewalk and parking along Antoinette Lane to accommodate utility work is scheduled for
February. Pedestrians walking on theCentennial Trail will temporarily be rerouted to the other
side ofAntoinette Lane, the sidewalktowards the Police Station. From April to July, contractors
will be working on the installation of exterior glass. A site visit is scheduled for Friday, February

11, 2022 at 3:30 PM; a second site visit may bescheduled for Thursday, February 10.The list of
names for the donor wall needto be finalized by the month of May; staff will be promoting one
last chance of donating towards the new building and becominga part of the donor wall.

NEW BUSINESS
2022 Election of Officers
A motion was made to elect the slate of officers as nominated at the November 2021 meeting:
Diane Huddleston as President; Mary Giusti as Vice President; Liru Chin as Secretary. The motion
was seconded and the slate of officers was approved by acclamation.Board member Camacho
asked about scheduling nominations and election of officers at the same meeting next year.
Director Sommer responded that splitting the two between November and January meetings has
been past practice; however, it is not required and we can combine them both in January 2023 for
the 2023 election of officers.
Library Board Meetings Through 2022
Boards and Commissions of the City of South San Francisco, including the Library Board of
Trustees, will continue to meet virtually through Spring.
Trivia Challenge Recap

The annual Trivia Challenge eventwas held on Friday,November 19at the South San Francisco
Conference Center. A total of 267 people attended the event in-
virtually, via livestream; a total of 19 teams participated and competed. After expenses, Project
Read was ableraise a total of $23,875.The breakdown of money raised is as follows: sponsorship
funding totaled to $17,500,silent auctionitems were nearly $2,000,team fees neared $4,400,
the 2021 Trivia Challenge. All safety protocols were followed, including proof of vaccination or
a negative COVID test from each attendee when entering the Conference Center. Staff has
received nothing but positive comments regarding the event,including feelingsafe, regardless of
COVID-19.
Library Strategic Directions Overview
As work continues for the New Library, staff is beginning to take into consideration needs and
emphasizing the core valuesfor the new areas, especially technology programs and services inthe
Discovery Center. We are hoping to be able to deploy staff to be able to provide the best service
and programming throughout the whole Library Department.
Introduction of New Library Program Manager Youth Services
The Library Board of Trustees welcomes new Youth Services Library Program Manager, Han-
Ching Wong. She comes from the San Bruno Public Library after 17 years of service. Han-Ching
previously worked for SSFPL as a part-time hourly Librarianand is very excited and honored to
be given the opportunity to return asa Library Program Manager for Youth Services. Han-Ching
lives in SSF.
Introduction of two new Literacy Program Coordinators Community Learning Center and
Project Read
The Library Board of Trustees welcomes Xochitl Cervantes as Literacy Program Coordinator for
adult programs located in the Community Learning Center. Karla Bourdon provided a brief
Xochitl has
a lot of experience working with community and will be given a chance for a more in-depth
introduction at a future meeting.

The Library Board of Trustees welcomes Silvia Beas. Silvia is filling the position of Literacy
Program Coordinatorfor adult programslocated atProject Read, previously filled by, now retired,
Fernando Cordova. Silvia is a South San Francisco native and has been involved in the San Bruno
and South San Francisco communities. Silvia grew up volunteering for both Project Read and the
Community Learning Center as a tutorsince she was in middle school. Silvia has experience in
High School education and decided to leave Capuchino High School after 7 and a half years of
service to join the Library team.

NewCommunity Civic Center Campus Update;FY 2022-23 Operating Budget Requests;Local
Schools Connections and Outreach; Introduction of New Literacy Program Coordinator
Community Learning Center.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
The South San Francisco Public Library Book Club meets virtually via Zoom on the third
Tuesday of each month at 6:00 P.M. The February book club selection is Clark and Division by
Naomi Hirahara. Please email [email protected] the Zoom link.
Beginning in February, Redwood City, San Bruno and South San Francisco Public Libraries, will
host a series of programs to remember the World War II incarceration of Japanese Americans.
Upcoming holidays:
Both Main and Grand Avenue Libraries will be closed on Sunday,

February 20and Monday, February 21.
