1.ADMINISTRATIVE BUSINESS
1)Study Session 2 - Free Bikes for Kids Program
Second study session for the free bikes for kids program. Chris Espiritu stated that we would be going over items that
were already discussed below and finding a starting point for the program, while staying with the core of the program
which is providing bikes for kids. Looking into how to ensure that kids do not resell the bikes. The average cost of a bike
and helmet is around $370, and for 20-30 students, we should seek funding for around $12,000.
1.There is nowhere for kids to ride bikes.
2.Build a bike park that is easily accessible to the youth.
3.A bike park that has more features such as wavy roads and tunnels.
4.Centennial Trail is near BART, and may be a good place to start with a straight bike path.
5.A six-week reward program for kids that do well in class, or finish an assignment.
6.Partner with a free bikes for kids program that provide refurbished bikes.
7.Drop in community service program where the Community, whether they're young or adults could come over
and help refurbish the bikes, to give back to the Community.
8.Community bike events where it allows people to come back the Community to come together as a whole, and
they could bike around the city and people in the Community may donate the money or any old bikes that they
may not use anymore.
9.Safety classes and bike riding lessons
10.Bike rodeos for young students to practice their safety bike skills.
11.Programs have been implemented in other states and often led by non-profit programs (Bikes for Kids
Foundation, Free Bikes 4 Kidz, Bike Works’ Bikes-for-All)
COMMITTEE COMMENTS
•Committee member mentioned a bike park along Centennial Trail, and inquired if that was something that
would be included in the Capital Improvement Program, or something this Committee should look into.
•Loaning out the bikes while they are at the bike parks, which would include staffing the parks.
•Monthly bike repair pop-ups at various locations throughout the City.
•Getting feedback from the Mother’s group on their thoughts around this program, as well as our Parks and Rec
Dept.
•The Committee would like more information from the Boys and Girls club, and their services, and what they
could possibly help with.
•Reaching out to the High School and inquiring if the Seniors could use this as their Senior project.
•Looking into making it a low-income or income based program.
•An education based program, the students with better grades would benefit from the program in the schools,
giving them more incentive to do better in school.
