AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 15.20 OF THE SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO
MUNICIPAL CODE TO ADOPT THE NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE, 1984
EDITION, AND TO REPEAL THE NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE, 1975 EDITION
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO DOES ORDAIN AS
FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1.
Chapter 15.20 of the South San Francisco Municipal Code is
hereby amended to read as follows:
Section 15.20.010 National Electrical Code, 1984 Edition,
adopted by reference.
The National Electrical Code, 1984 Edition, published by the National
Fire Protection Association, and including the Uniform Administrative Code Pro-
visions, published by the International Conference of Building Officials, as
modified by the amendments, additions and deletions set forth hereinafter, is
hereby adopted by reference as the Electrical Code of the City of South San
Francisco, and may be cited as such.
Section 15.20.020 Amendments, General.
Set forth below are the amendments, additions and deletions to the
National Electrical Code, 1984 Edition. Article and section numbers used herein
are those of the National Electrical Code.
Section 15.20.030 Violations.
Section 204. Violations. It shall be unlawful for any person, firm or
corporation to erect, construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, improve, remove,
convert or demolish, equip, use or maintain any electrical system or equipment
or cause or permit the same to be done in violation of this code. Each day
during any portion of which any violation of this code is committed or continued
by any person, firm or corporation shall constitute a separate offense and shall
be punishable as herein provided.
Section 15.20.040 Penalties.
Section 205. Penalties. Any person, firm or corporation violating or
causing or permitting the violation of any of the provisions of this code shall
be guilty of an infraction and, upon conviction thereof, shall be subject to
payment of a fine not to exceed the limits set forth in California Government
Code Section 36900.
In addition to the remedies provided above, any violation of this code
shall be and is hereby declared to be a public nuisance and may be abated as
such through appropriate civil proceedings.
The remedies provided for herein shall be cumulative and not exclusive.
Section 15.20~050 Metal-clad Cable,
Section 334-23~ Grounding~ An internal grounding conductor or con-
ductors, either copper or aluminum, shall be provided in each cable and shall
be grounded in accordance with Article 250.
Section 15.20.060. Non-metallic Sheathed Cable.
Section 336-3. Uses Permitted or Not Permitted. Type NM or Type NMC
cables shall be permitted to be used within each individual dwelling unit of
apartment buildings and one or two family dwellings only, provided that such
dwellings or structures do not exceed three floors above grade. For the pur-
pose of this article, the first floor of a building shall be that floor which
is designed for human habitation and which has fifty (50%) percent or more of
its perimeter level with or above finished grade of the exterior wall.

SECTION 2. The National Electrical Code, 1974 Edition (South San Fran-
cisco Municipal Code Sections 15.20.010 through 15.20.280), as enacted by
Ordinance 718-76, and any other ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict
herewith are hereby repealed.
SECTION 3. SEVERABILITY
If any section, subsection, sentence, clause or phrase of this ordinance
is for any reason held by a court of competent jurisdiction to be invalid,
such a decision shall not affect the validity of the remaining portions of
this ordinance. Such section, subsection, sentence, clause or phrase instead
shall be superseded and replaced by the provisions, if any exist, of the
National Electrical Code, 1984 Edition. The City Council hereby declares
that it would have passed this ordinance and each section or subsection,
sentence, clause or phrase thereof irrespective of the fact that any one or
more sections, subsections, sentences, clauses or phrases be declared invalid.
SECTION 4. PUBLICATION & EFFECTIVE DATE
After the introduction of this ordinance, pursuant to Government Code Sec-
tion 50022.3, notice of a public hearing to be held on December 10, 1986 shall
be published once a week for two successive weeks in the Enterprise-Journal, a
newspaper of general circulation in the City of South San Francisco. Upon

adoption, this ordinance shall be published once, as required by law, and shall
become effective thirty (30) days from and after the date of its adoption.
