AN ORDINANCE AMENDING TITLE 20 OF THE
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO MUNICIPAL CODE TO
CLARIFY PROVISIONS PERTAINING TO
PARKING, DRIVEWAYS & LOT DIMENSIONS
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO DOES ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1.

Subsections (b) and (c) of Sections 20.06.110 are hereby

(b) Garage or Carport, One-Car.
An accessible and usable covered space designed and constructed for
the parking or storage of one motor vehicle. A carport is not
considered an enclosed space.
(c) Garage or Carport, Two-Car.
An accessible and usable covered space designed and constructed for
the parking or storage of two motor vehicles. A carport is not
considered an enclosed space.

(f) Automotive and Equipment:
Automotive Repairs and Equipment Repair/Sales.
Four spaces for each hoist, rack or area primarily designed for
servicing or minor repair of one motor vehicle, or one space for
every three hundred square feet of repair area (excluding fuel
pump service areas) if individual vehicle repair areas are not
identified. In addition, one space is required for every two
hundred fifty gross square feet of floor area devoted to retail
sales or office use. In no case shall fewer than five off-street
parking spaces be provided. Tandem spaces shall be permitted~
provided that in no case shall the off-street parking requirement
be satisfied by space provided in any area normally used for
servicing, repair, ingress and egress of vehicles.
SECTION 3.
Section 20.74.110 is hereby amended to read:
Section 20.74.110 Size
(a)
Each uncovered off-street parking space shall be at least eight and
one-half feet by eighteen feet, exclusive of driveway and aisles
except that, in the case of a space located parallel to a curbj the
length of the space shall be twenty feet.
(b)
Concrete bumper guards or wheel stops shall be provided for all
unenclosed parking spaces. A six inch high concrete curb
surrounding a landscape area at least six feet wide may be used
as a wheel stop, provided that the overhang will not damage or
interfere with plant growth or its irrigation. A concrete
sidewalk may be used as a wheel stop provided the overhang will
not interfere with pedestrian movement. A maximum of two feet
of the required length of a parking space may overhang a
landscape area or a sidewalk.
(c) The minimum dimensions of each new covered or enclosed parking space
shall be ten feet in width by twenty feet in length.
(d) For the purpose of determining the existing number of enclosed spaces
for an existing dwelling unit the following dimensions shall apply:
(1)
An existing garage with minimum interior dimensions of eight
and one-half feet in width and eighteen feet in length shall
qualify as one existing enclosed parking space.
(2)
An existing garage with minimum interior dimensions of seventeen
feet in width and eighteen feet in length shall qualify as two
existing enclosed parking spaces.
If the minimum interior dimensions of an existing enclosed parking
space exceeds the minimum dimensions permitted in this subsection,
the existing enclosed space dimensions shall be maintained.
(e) The vertical clearance for covered or enclosed parking spaces shall
not be less than seven feet six inches.

(a)
Residential parking spaces shall be located on the same lot or
building as the dwellings to be served. At least one space per
unit shall be a totally enclosed garage space. Each garage space
shall be equipped with an automatic door opener and a roll-up
sectional or similar garage door which does not extend onto the
apron. On a multi-family dwelling, a security gate on a
multi-space garage is permitted.

(d)
In all residential districts, driveway approaches (curb cuts) shall
be permitted only to provide access to approved garages, carports and
parking spaces located in other than required setbacks.

{i) Lot size: The minimum size of the lot on which the second unit may
be built shall be five thousand square feet.
SECTION 8. SEVERABILITY
In the event any section or portion of this ordinance shall be determined
invalid or unconstitutional, such section or portion shall be deemed severable
and all other sections or portions hereof shall remain in full force and effect.
SECTION 9. PUBLICATION AND EFFECTIVE DATE
This ordinance shall be published once, with the names of those City Council
members voting for or against it, in the Enterprise-Journal, a newspaper of
general circulation in the City of South San Francisco, as required by law, and
shall become effective thirty {30) days from and after its adoption.

meeting of the City Council of the City of South San Francisco, held the 9th
day of August , 1989, by the following vote:
