HomeMy WebLinkAbout06.15.2023 Youth Commission MinutesCity of South San Francisco Youth Commission Meeting Minutes: Thursday, June 15, 2023 City Manager’s Conference Room, City Hall, South San Francisco, CA 94080 11:00am Commission Members: Present: Ethan Mizzi, Melissa Hua, Aaron Adriano, Sophia Cyris, Nika Mariano, Jian Carlo Ray, Claudia Miller, Danielle Leong, Sara Vides, Julia Tsuei, Jasmine Ho Absent: Nataly Quinteros, Daniela Aceves, Sophia Cyris Staff Members: Present: Tamiko Huey, Management Analyst II Maryjo Nuñez, Management Fellow Devin Stenhouse, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Officer _____________________________________________________________________________________ Call to Order: Meeting called to order at 11:00am. Agenda Review: No changes to the agenda. Items from Staff -The City will be hosting its Cultures United Pride Flag Raising on June 17, 2023. There will be free t-shirts while supplies last. -Devin Stenhouse introduced himself as the new DEI officer. -Sydnie and Mariela are our CMO summer interns -Maryjo shared about YSIP, echoed by Danielle Leong -Tamiko shared that there will be t-shirts for those first come, first serve -Maryjo shared about Our Family, Our Future -Tamiko shared that there will be a Health Fair, and Devin clarified that the 23rd Health Fair will be on the 30th -Marty Piñol from Library confirmed that there will be books available from the Youth Poet in Residence -There is a study for youth available to participate in and receive $500 from the City of Olympia. Chair Mizzi shared that Olympia is the capital of Washington. Approval of Minutes: The minutes from May 1, 2023, were approved. Public Comments: There were students from the City’s Summer Camp as well as interns from the Youth Summer Internship Program in attendance and introduced themselves to the Commission. Matters for Consideration 1. Approval of Minutes Commissioner Ho motioned, seconded by Commissioner Leong and all voted aye the minutes were approved. 3. Discussion of Youth Bonding Event Agenda Item #3 was moved up as the guest speaker from Agenda Item #2 was not yet present. Tamiko will send dates Chair Mizzi: do we want the tour of the LPR? Commissioners confirmed that they want the tour; Commissioner Yoshida shared they would like boba again. The Commissioners do not wish to tour the police station. The Commissioners concluded they would like to eat at Orange Park. Transportation will be determined at a later date. 2. Presentation from Planned Parenthood, Mar Monte Elizabeth Molina works in advocacy for Planned Parenthood. She will discuss services, but the emphasis will be on public affairs. 3 main prongs: healthcare, education, and advocacy SMC has 3 Planned Parenthoods in RWC, San Mateo, and SSF Advocacy Health centers are the “3” side; Advocacy is the “4” side -unlimited advocacy + lobbying: promote the work of PPMM and advocate on issues important to the PPMM patients -endorse candidates: research and rate candidates, promote endorsements via PPAMM online voter guide -contribute to candidates: fundraise and donate to targeted endorsed candidates -Lots of mobilization: patient organizing, maintain relationships with elected officials -media: liaison with media and press requests Questions from the Commissioners -Chair Mizzi: you mentioned Adam Lorrain’s race; he thinks PPMM was the deciding factor for them -Vice Chair Hua: how did you get involved in your role with PPMM for those interested in similar work; also, you talked about Roe v. Wade, how has this impacted you? -Elizabeth: since we did see a drastic influx of patients and that a lot of them are planted near transportation hotspots, they were able to continue providing services, but Roe v. Wade did impact need but luckily, they were able to fund their health centers completely operationally. She took a public health course, joined the Asian American affinity group in San Jose State, and also joined the public health department at SJSU. She recommends that volunteering is the way to go. -Commissioner Mariano thanked Elizabeth Molina for coming to talk about PPMM; they learned new services about PPMM. Recess called at 11:54am and ended at 12:09pm. 4. Debrief on Boards and Commissions -Chair Mizzi attend the SamsTrans Measure W meeting and will send the slides/notes he took to staff to send to the Commission. -Commissioner Adriano shared that there was a Pride Parade in San Mateo last weekend, and for SSF, there will be a flag raising and a documentary showing. They thought that SMC Pride wouldn’t be as fun, but it was still fun, just more family-friendly. -Chair Mizzi shared that David Canepa is looking for volunteers to march with him at SF Pride. -Chair Mizzi shared that the Planning Commission will be meeting tonight. ITEMS FROM COMMISSION -The Chair will be elected during the new school year, so they will be elected in August. -Chair Mizzi will brainstorm outreach tactics -Vice Chair shared information about her nonprofit where high schoolers teach middle schools about civics, so if folks have middle schoolers, send them her way so the nonprofit: Youth Policy Initiative Meeting adjourned at 12:31pm.
