You are invited to offer your suggestions. In order that you may know our method of conducting Library
business, we proceed as follows:
The regular meetings of the Library Board of Trustees are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at
6:00 PM in the Main Library, Auditorium, 840 West Orange Avenue, South San Francisco, California.
Public Comment: For those wishing to address the Board of Trustees on any Agenda or non-Agendized item,
please complete a Speaker Card available from the Main Library and submit it to the Library's Administrative
Assistant. Please be sure to indicate the Agenda Item # you wish to address or the topic of your public comment.
California law prevents the Board of Trustees from taking action on any item not on the Agenda (except in
emergency circumstances). Your question or problem may be referred to staff for investigation or action (or
both) where appropriate or the matter may be placed on a future Agenda for more comprehensive action or a
report. When your name is called, please state your name and address (optional) for the Minutes. COMMENTS
ARE LIMITED TO THREE (3) MINUTES PER SPEAKER. Thank you for your cooperation.
The Library Board President will read successively the items of business appearing on the Agenda. As
she completes reading an item, it will be ready for Board discussion or action.

X. FEATURED ANNOUNCEMENTS
a) The SSF Public Library Book Club meets virtually via Zoom on the third Tuesday of each
month at 6:00 PM. The July 2023 Book Club selection is The Revolutionary by Stacy Schiff.

b) Holiday closure: All library facilities will be closed Tuesday, July 4.
c) South San Francisco Main Library will be open on West Orange Avenue for the last time up to
6:00 PM on Friday, July 7, 2023 after nearly 57 years of service to the community. Services

for more information on the move to our new state-of-the-art Library and Parks & Recreation
Center opening Fall 2023. Thanks for the memories and the support, we look forward to seeing
you in the new Main Library!
d) Happy Birds will WOW audiences of all ages! Six beautiful, feathered friends perform over 25
tricks during this fun and educational show on Saturday, July 22 at the Grand Avenue Library.
Visitors to the library will learn important facts about parrots. The show features two talking
and singing Amazon parrots, colorful Macaws, and clever Cockatoos.

CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 6:00 P.M. in the Main Library.
ATTENDANCE
Library Trustees present: Hector Camacho, Liru Chin, Mary Giusti, Diane Huddleston and Claire
Ramsey. Library Staff present: Valerie Sommer, Library Director; Adam Elsholz, Assistant
Library Director; and Anita Palafox, Administrative Assistant II. Guests: Robert Turnberg,
Stephanie Torres, Elliot Warren.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion to approve the minutes as presented from the April 25, 2023, meeting was made by Library
Board Member, Diane Huddleston, and seconded by Claire Ramsey, Secretary. All members were
in favor.

OLD BUSINESS
New Main Library and Parks & Recreation Community Center Update
Assistant Library Director, Adam Elsholz, started attending weekly Punch List meetings. Punch
List meetings are walk-through inspections of areas .
The team is has done an RFP for a moving company; selection will be made soon.
Angela Bernal-Silva, Management Analyst continues working with Information Technology
Department on networking and computer equipment.
NEW BUSINESS
New Staff Introductions
Welcome to Stephanie Torres, Literacy Services Coordinator with Project Read and Elliot Warren,
Program Manager for Grand Ave Library. Both new staff members introduced themselves with a
short bio.

Fiscal Year 23-24 Library Department Budget Requests Status
Full-time positions were not approved to go forward in the pending budget for the upcoming fiscal
year; however, hourly positions have been approved in the pending budget. City departments have
been asked to reduce their budgets by 2.8%. Reductions may be re-visited at mid-year. The final
budget approval request will go to CC at the June 28 meeting.
Discussion and Motion to Approve Friday, July 7, 2023, as the final open date for the current
Main Library in preparation of the move to the New Main Library
The Library Board reviewed and discussed the Motion to approve Friday, July 7, 2023, as the final
open date for the current Main Library. The Motion was made by Library Board Member, Diane
Huddleston, and seconded by Liru Chin, Vice President. All members were in favor.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
The City of South San Francisco will be raising the Progress Pride Flag. Join the City at the steps

of City Hall (400 Grand Avenue) on Saturday, June 17. Free South San Francisco Proud t-shirts
will be given (while supplies last). Following the event, a special screening of Dana Johnson's,
TherActivist: They/Them/Theirs documentary will be held at the Grand Avenue Library (306
Walnut Avenue) at 1:00 p.m.

FAQs for Library Patrons
Main Library on West Orange Avenue will close on Friday, July 7, 2023 in
preparation for its move to a new, modern building at El Camino Real and Chestnut Avenue. The new
Library and Parks & Recreation Center will open Fall 2023.
Where is the library going?
The library will be moving to the new, state-of-the-art Library and Parks & Recreation Center on the
corner of El Camino Real and Chestnut Avenue, across the street from the new Police Station.
When will the library close?
The Main Library on West Orange Avenue will close at the end of the day on Friday, July 7, at 6:00 PM.
During the closure, movers will box up and move it to the New Main Library
while Library staff prepare for programs and services.
When will the library open at the new location?
Due to the nature of the construction process, an exact opening day for the new facility has yet to be
determined. It is the Ciand Parks & Recreation Center in Fall 2023. As we
get closer to a clear opening date, we will share that information with the community.
What will be new about the new Library and Parks & Recreation Center?
The new Library and Parks & Recreation Center
programs and events. The Library will feature several new amenities for the community including a high-
tech Discovery Center, Teen Zone, and study and meeting rooms
and dance studios, classrooms, teaching kitchen, and large banquet and event spaces. The Center also
features a 1.3 acre park and playground. For more information about the project, visit

Where do I get library services while the Main Library is closed?
During the closure period, the Grand Avenue Library will remain open and all services normally available
at the Main Library, including story times and other programs, will be provided from the Grand Avenue
Library.
Where do I get Project Read literacy services while the Main Library is closed?
Project Read will offer services at the Gene Mullin Community Learning Center, located at 520
Tamarack Lane, (650) 829-3871. Staff will meet with tutors and learners weekdays, between 9
AM and 5 PM by appointment. Services will include one-on-one or group tutoring, and the
monthly Book Club.
Learning Wheels and Family Literacy Workshops will continue uninterrupted as shared through
flyers, calls, and word of mouth.
Do I need to return my library materials while the Main Library on West Orange Avenue is closed?

You can keep any materials owned by South San Francisco Public Library until a few weeks after the new
Main Library opens. Due dates for materials owned by South San Francisco Public Library will be
extended until October 2023. Materials owned by other Peninsula Library System libraries must be
returned by their due date.
Will the Grand Avenue Library have expanded hours?
Yes! As of Monday, July 10, Grand Avenue Library will be open Monday through Sunday with the
following hours:
Monday-Thursday 10 AM 8 PM
Friday 10 AM 6-PM
Saturday 10 AM 5 PM
Sunday 2 PM 5 PM
Where is the Grand Avenue Library?
The Grand Avenue Library is located at 306 Walnut Ave, on the corner of Grand Avenue and Walnut Ave,
next to City Hall. Free two-hour parking is available for Library visitors in the City Hall parking lot behind
the library as well as at metered parking in front of the Library on Walnut Avenue. For questions about
library materials, you can call Grand Avenue Library at (650) 877-8530.
Can I check out books while the library is closed? Where can I pick up my holds or return my
materials?
You can visit our Grand Avenue Library or any other public library in San Mateo County to check out
materials in person. You can also put materials on hold, pick them up, or return them at our Grand
Avenue Library or at another library located in San Mateo County.

Will the library have any programs this summer?
While the Main Library is closed, many of our popular programs, storytimes, and exciting Summer
Learning events will be at our Grand Avenue Library. Check our calendar and website for all of the
details.

May I drop off donations for the Friends of the Library book sale during the closure?
Friends of the Library storage space is limited at this time. For all donations, please wait until we reopen
or donate them to another nearby library.
What will happen to the Main Library building when you close?
The City is studying options to convert the existing Main Library into a new licensed preschool facility.
Due diligence and design is expected to begin late 2023. Public outreach opportunities and additional
information will be available with the public once this process commences.
