LIBRARY DIRECTOR

chairs and computer stations available for patrons. We also added back
additional hours, getting us just four hours off of our regular, pre-pandemic

Main, and 7-8pm on Wednesday at Grand, arescheduled to return on August 2,
2021, along with the reopening of all City buildings.
The Main Library is a Vote Center for the September 14 Gubernatorial Recall
Election. In addition, there will be 24/7 outdoor ballot boxes in both the City Hall
parking lot and the Main Library Parking lot. The in-person Vote Center at the
SSF Main Library, 840 West Orange Avenue, will open starting on August 16,

At the June 28meeting of the South San Francisco Public Library Foundation,
Pat FitzPatrick, Foundation Secretary (and SSF Friends of the Library Secretary),
announced a very generous $1,000,000 donation from the Friends to support the
New Main Library and Community Centerproject. This is part of a bequest from
the Kokezas familywho were longtime Friends members and library users.
During very hot days, I’m sorry to say the Main Library cannot operate as a
cooling center because there is no air conditioning on the public level. The
Library opened in 1966 when it was thought air conditioning was not needed in
South San Francisco! Although Grand Library has air conditioning, the floor
space is not large enough to operate as a cooling center -especially if social
distancing is still observed. The Main Library has provided service during local
PG&E outages.
We received a $300 donation to purchase e-books for the collection. Our
appreciative and generous donor writes:

o In June, staff taught weekly classes on various digital literacy skills
including learning languages online,Architecture of the Internet, device
security, understanding common device cables and creating resumes with
Brainfuse. In addition to learning new skills and getting the chance to
socialize with library staff, these classes are also a great way to get the
word out on reopening plans, updates to the collection, and more. Staff
have also been able to share information related to San Mateo County’s
vaccination efforts.
o We now have a YouTube Playlistfor all our Tech Tuesday
classes:https://bit.ly/3jNhMXV

YOUTH SERVICES
Our summer interns Cindy and Nadine joined us at the end of June and have
been delightful to work with!
This year’s Summer Learning Challenge got off to a great start and is well
underway! With outreach efforts and in-library displays, we’ve been able to get
thousands of books into the hands of the city’s youth.
Since June 7th, we’ve posted more than 25programs, activities, and reading lists
to our Summer Learning Challenge page.
o In addition, our weekly take and make kits have been a huge success at
both libraries. We make 150 of these kits each week for distribution and
they “sell out” very quickly! The first week’s kit was a DIY journal, the
second weekwas wildflower seed bombs, and the third week was a cork
shark craft.Upcoming kits include paper circuits and friendship bracelets.
July marks the return of a patron favorite performer: Python Ron is back with us
(virtually!) on Saturday, July 17th. Thisprogram will be recorded and made
available for a week after the live show.
Jennifer is continuing the success of her Choose Your Own Adventure book
clubs with two author talks in the coming months! Katherine Factor and Deborah
LermeGoodman have both written Choose Your Own Adventure titles and will
be reading with the book club group in July and October.
Melisa has been workingon virtual programming and assembling circulating
STEAM kitsas part of the Virtual Youth Programming grant from the State
Library. She and Frances from Project Read/CLC have been able to bring a
variety ofSTEAMlearning programs and experiences to South City.

Cassinettoto bring poetry workshops to kids and teens. Next month, they
welcome Meera Dasgupta, 2020 Youth Poet Laureate of the United States.
Looking ahead: September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and we are working
on avirtualprogram with Ian Lendler, author ofNia and the New Free Library,a
book about the power of community and the important role libraries play in
communities. Mr. Lendleris a wonderful library advocate, and we look forward to
welcoming him back to South City-we hosted him for an incredibly compelling
and engaging author talk at Spruce Elementary in 2018.

Room’s map collections. We also welcome back on-site librarian, Eva Martinez,
and volunteer, Shelby Wright.Shelby is continuing work on our photo inventory,
and staff areplanning projects related to our maps, biographical, and vertical
