This is part of a bequest from the Kokezas familywho were longtime Friends members and library users. During very hot days, I’m sorry to say the Main Library cannot operate as a cooling center because there is no air conditioning on the public level. The Library opened in 1966 when it was thought air conditioning was not needed in South San Francisco! Although Grand Library has air conditioning, the floor space is not large enough to operate as a cooling center -especially if social distancing is still observed. The Main Library has provided service during local PG&E outages. We received a $300 donation to purchase e-books for the collection. Our appreciative and generous donor writes: Top 30 Library items on reserve and number of system-wide holds per title: 2 Top 30 e-books and e-audiobooks on reserve: ASSISTANT LIBRARY DIRECTOR COVID-19 outreach continues through a partnership with San Mateo County, with Library staff supportinga wide variety of outreach, including canvassing neighborhoods and local events, phone banking, social media and email newsletters, to connect our community with accurate information about the virus. We welcome back our volunteer, Jeff, who is on-site weekly to answer questions and provide resources to our veterans. o Summer highlights: Staff are brainstorming new ideas and planning programs such as a community journaling project, City Hall Centennial Celebration, history projects, and more. 4 YOUTH SERVICES Our summer interns Cindy and Nadine joined us at the end of June and have been delightful to work with! This year’s Summer Learning Challenge got off to a great start and is well underway! With outreach efforts and in-library displays, we’ve been able to get thousands of books into the hands of the city’s youth. Since June 7th, we’ve posted more than 25programs, activities, and reading lists to our Summer Learning Challenge page. o In addition, our weekly take and make kits have been a huge success at both libraries. We make 150 of these kits each week for distribution and they “sell out” very quickly! The first week’s kit was a DIY journal, the second weekwas wildflower seed bombs, and the third week was a cork shark craft.Upcoming kits include paper circuits and friendship bracelets. July marks the return of a patron favorite performer: Python Ron is back with us (virtually!) on Saturday, July 17th. Thisprogram will be recorded and made available for a week after the live show.
