You are invited to offer your suggestions. In order that you may know our method of conducting Library
business, we proceed as follows:
The regular meetings of the Library Board of Trustees are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at
6:00 PMin the Main Library, Auditorium, 840 West Orange Avenue
,South San Francisco, California.
Public Comment: For those wishing to address the Board of Trustees on any Agenda or non-Agendized item,
please complete a Speaker Card available from the Main Library and submit it to the Library's
Administrative Assistant. Please be sure to indicate the Agenda Item # you wish to address or the topic of
your public comment. California law prevents the Board of Trustees from taking action on any item noton
the Agenda (except in emergency circumstances). Your question or problem may be referred to staff for
investigation or action (or both) where appropriate or the matter may be placed on a future Agenda for more
comprehensive action or a report. When your name is called, please state your name and address (optional)
for the Minutes. COMMENTS ARE LIMITED TO THREE (3) MINUTES PER SPEAKER. Thank you for
your cooperation.
The Library Board President will read successively the items of business appearing on the Agenda. As she
completes reading an item, it will be ready for Board discussion or action.

CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 6:00P.M. in the Main Library
ATTENDANCE
Library Trustees present:Diane Huddleston,Valerie Lambertson, Pat FitzPatrickandRobert

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
A motion to approve the minutes of the regular February 28, 2017meeting was made and
seconded. A vote was taken and the minutes were approvedas presented.
PUBLIC COMMENTS

On Saturday, March 25, Kumkum Gupta attended “When I Grow Up,” an event presented to
elementary and middle school girls, sponsored by Congresswoman Jackie Speier.A panel of
women speakers was invited and spoke oftheir professionsand how they reached their goal.
Kumkum suggests the Library hostsimilar programs and invite various speakers to draw in
South San Francisco residents.Director Sommer noted that last year’s “When I Grow Up”
program was held in the Main Library.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT
The Boardreviewed the Director’s Report.The Tomb Treasures presented by the Asian Art

Museum on Saturday, March 4was funded by the Friends of the Library.Correctionsand typos
on the programming spreadsheetwere noted and will be corrected.

OLD BUSINESS
Library Openings and Recruitments
Marta Bookbinder’s position has now been filled;Vanessa Torres has accepted the position of
LiteracyServices Coordinator for the Community Learning Center.

The two positions for the Library Program Managers are still in process to be filled. The oral
board interviewed 6 candidates, a total of 5 proceeded to the next round of interviews with
Valerie and Adam. Announcements of the two selected candidates is pending.
New Main Library / Community Center Planning Update
Since the passage of Measure W in November 2015, much work has been completed.
Preliminary planning has been done including site analysis, engineering and survey work,
feasibility studies and cost estimates. City Council has identifiedthe PUC property as the best
site for the new Main Library/ Community Center. A Measure W Citizen’s Oversight Committee
has been appointed to monitor expenditures. Kitchell Construction Management Group has been
selected as program manager to manage design and construction of the new facilitiesincluding
Library/ Community Center,Fire Department, andPolice Department. Councilmembers Addiego
and Garbarino are on the Council’s Measure W subcommittee.The Notice of Preparation of an
Environmental Impact Report for the Community Civic Campus Project has been distributed.
Kitchell coordinated project team meetings to evaluate and select the best Project Delivery
Method. Design-Bid-Build method was selected for the newMainLibrary/ Community Center.
An RFP/RFQ for a design team is scheduled to be issued in June/July. The design processis
estimatedto begin in December.
NEW BUSINESS
Monthly Literacy Program Statistics Chart
The Library Board of Trustees reviewed the monthly literacy program statistics chart. The
attachment will now be included in the monthly board packets totheLibraryBoard Members.
Proposed Budget Narrative 2017 –2019
The Library Board of Trustees reviewed the proposed budget narrative for 2017 –2019.
