Public Comment: For those wishing to address the Board of Trustees on any Agenda or non-Agendized item,
please complete a Speaker Card available from the Main Library and submit it to the Library's Administrative
Assistant. Please be sure to indicate the Agenda Item # you wish to address or the topic of your public
comment. California law prevents the Board of Trustees from taking action on any item noton the Agenda
(except in emergency circumstances). Your question or problem may be referred to staff for investigation or
action (or both) where appropriate or the matter may be placed on a future Agenda for more comprehensive
action or a report. When your name is called, please state your name and address (optional) for the Minutes.

The meeting was called to order at 6:00P.M. in the Main Library.

Library Openings and RecruitmentUpdates
Part –time Literacy Services Coordinator, Paul Buckley will be presented at the next Library
Board of Trustees meeting. The recruitment for the full -time Literacy Services Coordinator is
still in process; a second roundof interviews will be made fromthe list of qualifying candidates.
A decision is expected to be made by the nextLibrary Boardmeeting in May.
Community Civic Campus Project Update
The City, along with the master architects, SmithGroupJJR,held a neighborhood informational

community meeting on Monday, April 23,to present the statuson the Civic Campus project,
and to alsolook forfeedbackfrom the public.There will be a Special City Council Meeting on

Wednesday, April 25beginning at 6:00 PM to update Council memberson the project.A list of
comments and responses from the Community Civic Campus Survey was passed out to the board
members.

The list of proposed budget requests for FY 2018 –2019 was read off to the Library Board.The
list of requests will not be finalized by the City Council until June.
National Library Week Recap
An estimated 500patrons(not includingregularly scheduled programs)attended the special
Library eventsheld for National Library Week, at both Main and Grand Avenue Library. Events
included two author talks, a puppet show, two Open House events and a community program

The Friends of the Library will be holding their Spring Book Sale on Saturday, May 12from

LIBRARY DIRECTOR
Citizens Academy @ the Library took place on May 8, 2018.We were happyto have
Library Board members join us. Staff did a great job in providing hands-on
demonstrations of ‘tech’,such as the Virtual Reality equipment, a 3D printer, Meccanoid
the robot, and digital resources including e-magazines, Kanopy streaming video and
more. Several staff participated in a group PowerPoint presentation that highlighted our
great programs and services. The CA participants were positive and supportive. All in all,
an informative and fun evening.
The Early Voting Center for the June 5 election opened at the Main Library on Monday,
May 7. It will operate every day through Election Day, including the full Memorial Day
weekend. Registered voters can vote here or dropoffmail-in ballots. Grand Library will
be a Voting Center for the fivedays up to andincluding Election Day.
Saturday, May 5 was a great day in the parkfor the Parks Alive/Streets Alive Event, with
the opening of the Farmer’s Market, a visit from Learning Wheels, a very interactive
Library services table in the Fernekes Building courtyard, and an interactive Town Hall
program in the FernekesBuilding. This last event was coordinated by our New Main
Library and Recreation Community Center architect, Smithgroup, with participation from
Library and Parks and Recreation. It was similar to recent focus group activities hosted
by Smithgroup. We received very positive feedback and good suggestions regarding our
new joint facility.
We are happy to partner with the San Mateo County Home for All Initiative on an
upcoming program atthe Main Library-Tuesday, June 12, 6:00 p.m. -Living in San
Mateo County: Community Discussion with Home for All.
Representatives from the Home for All Initiative will lead an informative presentation on
the current housing environment in San Mateo County, followed by a facilitated group
discussion. The library will provide an inviting space to meet with fellow community
members to share and discuss ideas related to housing and living in the area. This
program will provide opportunities for open dialogue and engaging conversation.
Home for All SMC is a collaborative initiative comprised of the County of San Mateo,
various cities/towns, school districts, community-based organizations, advocacy groups,
and businesses. The mission of Home for All is to establish a climate in San Mateo
County where a diversity of housing is produced and preserved so that San Mateo County
will be a culturally, generationally, and economically diverse community with housing for
all.

Thanks to JeffFong, our Veterans Connect @the Library volunteer, who hosted a table
and cooked burgers at the free monthly BBQ at the Veterans Offices in San Bruno.This
event takes place on the second Tuesday of the month, at 11:30am.
ASSISTANT LIBRARY DIRECTOR
Staffing at the Grand Library has been bolstered with Library Assistant and Clerk shifts
added from the Main Library.
Staff training continues with vision and values workshops. Managers are also being
trained in revised scheduling procedures.
A new page on the website features “Library News”, the goal of which is to keep
community and stakeholders informed of the progress of our strategic plan goals and
other initiatives.
Managers are recruiting summer interns to help with the history room, makerspace,
summer learning, and social media.
PATRON, CIRCULATION AND TECHNICAL SERVICES
Our annual Volunteer Appreciation event took place on April 17. Volunteers enjoyed an
afternoon tea provided by James Stanfield Catering.Donna-Lee Powers waspresented
with our Volunteer of the Year awardin recognition of her service with Project Read,
especially financial coaching assistance. Teen volunteers Asheli and Kaileiani Louie were
also recognized for their hard work and service to the library.
The Technical Services team led by Supervising Library Specialist Diana Castro and
Library Assistant II Kay Yoong has been working to prepare our new Quick Picks
collection, a selection of the newest and hottest books and movies that are non-
reservable and non-renewable so they will be availableandon the shelf to patrons in the
library. The selection will change frequently, so be sure to check the new release area
often.
Library Assistants Brian Malibiran, Jovi Bondoc, Steven Wong, and Reuben Margolis,
along with Librarian Melisa Mendoza have finished planning their third Escape Room
program, this time with a space theme.The two sessions filled up within two days!
SSFPL has completed its one year term as chair of the PLS Cataloging Standards
Committee.
Shawnte Santos and Martin Piñolhave been invited to represent the library and present
on the innovative literacy programs created for Peninsula Libraries Comic Arts Fest at
both the Comics Conference for Educators and Librarians in July and the California
LibraryAssociation Annual Conference in November.In addition, they have been selected
by the Peninsula Libraries Comic Arts Fest committee to create and compile program
ideas for use by other PLS libraries.
Shawnte and Martin were also recognized by the Young Adult Library Services
Association (YALSA), a division of the ALA, for the Pixel Art Selfies program they created
for Teen Tech Week in March. They were awarded a mini-library of YALSA teen service
publications for their commitment to young adult services.

INFORMATION AND READER’S SERVICES
Digital Literacy & Computer Basics Skills
Computer classestaughtby librarians were attended by59patrons duringApril.
Programs focused onevaluatingfake news, searching the internet, and accessing e-
books and e-audiobooks. Staff alsorevamped theExcel class to teach basic budgeting
skills to coincide with Money Smart Week (MSW).
Premiere Programs
National Library Weekwas celebratedin April with author talks from Vanessa Garcia and
Lee Bruno. The library hosted Open Houses with refreshments, crafts, and e-resource
drop in stations that brought in over 100 patrons.Cassandra Bankson, a popular You
Tube personality,discussed bullyingin the digital age.
Online Resources
We launched the video streaming service, Kanopy, in April. In our first month, we had
over 700 unique sessions totaling 152 plays.https://ssf.kanopy.com/welcome/frontpage
The new SSF Library–Peninsula Library Systemapp also debuted in April. Patrons can
now download the free app via Google Play and App Store to access their library
accounts, search for books, and find out about events.http://www.plsinfo.org/communico
YOUTH SERVICES
The library hosted Emily Puppetryas aspecial guest at FamilyStorytime.She worea
revolving skirt that doubled asthe scenery for her puppets. A very unique storytimewas
enjoyed by 92 attendees.
Tommy’s Space Adventure Puppet Showhad 101 attendees. After the show, the children
learned about types of puppets and how they are made.
The two Kidz in Motionprograms in April had a total of 127. Children learn their ABCs,
shapes, counting and more using curriculum-based movement activities.
The kite-making program had 64 attendees. Families were very creative at drawing,
designing and decorating their kites.
We reached a total of 236 youth and families through outreach and library visits for the
month of April, and issued library cards at each visit.
Martin Pinol conducted our first Intro to Music and Podcast Recordingprogram, including
editing content,for teens!
18 teens came to the library to do their SAT Practice Test onaSunday.
Melisa Mendoza led patrons in making designs on t-shirts using the OsmoCreative Kit.
The children projected their designs onto the t-shirt and traced the image.
Staffing update: Joseph Ferrer has accepted a newly created position at SFPL (San
Francisco Public Library) as their Tech Mobile Librarian. He will be delivering technology
learning experiences to disadvantaged neighborhoods in San Francisco. It is with mixed
emotions that we wish him good luck! He will remain an hourly librarian for weekends with
South San Francisco Public Library.

GRAND AVENUE BRANCH LIBRARY
J
uvenile program attendance at Grand Library was nearly 900 visitors for the month of
April; adult program attendance was over 100 visitors.
ALA’s National Library Week was celebratedat Grand through week-long programs, and
culminated in 100+ patrons partaking in our Open House event.
Nathan Dean, a local Eagle Scout in troop 72, partnered with library staff to add a Little
Libraryoutside Grand Avenue Library to expand its service modalities and improve
curbside appeal. He earned a badge for his contribution to the community.
We have replaced tax forms with voter materials in anticipation of the June primary.

Staff helped a community member locate the South San Francisco home of her childhood..
The History Room Librarian continues to assist City staff with research for theNeighborhood
Map project.
Programs
The second session of our genealogy series focused on military service and immigration
using Ancestry.com.
PROJECT READ & COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTER
Children Programs:all grades inHomework Club (HWC)continued to work on their
math skills duringMath Magic. In April,staffalso continued its10-session Hands On
Minds On science component which was designed by California Academy of Sciences for

our 3and 4grade students, 5Graders participated in Science Action Club, also a
program of the Academy, and students continued to be engaged in engineering design
activities through MakerSpace.Everyone is excited and getting ready for the next big

Family Event coming up on May 22at the Community Learning Center and in
collaboration with the Parks and Recreation REAL program.
Learning Wheels:
SSF Weekly visits to Health Center, WIC, Sitike Drug & Alcohol Treatment Center.
San Bruno Weekly visits to Catholic Worker Homeless Shelter. Story time, healthy
snacks, and visit to van for free books and activities.
SSFmonthly visit to continuation high school, Community Day School.
Daly Citymonthly visit to Our Second Home.
Volunteers: In AprilCLC had the support from one robotics expert who continues to meet
with a group of ten students per week and engages them in math and engineering
challenges to promote theirinterest in design and building of robots. Former Reading
Circles volunteers continue to contribute their time to the fourth and fifth graders who are
struggling with their reading. Six high school studentscompletedtheir Capstone projects
while supportingthe CLC as part of the volunteer team.

COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTER
South San Francisco Public Library
ROOM USEPOLICY
Eligibility:Space is available for local non-profit organizations,including neighborhood associations,
schools, or public agencies, targeting a South San Francisco audience,to hold meetings or programs in
the Community Learning Center (CLC)that are open to the public. No fees, dues, or donations may
be charged or solicited by the user, nor may any item or service be sold or advertised. In addition,
commercial use of roomsby private groups for purpose of sales is prohibited.
This policy does not apply to use of the facility for Library, City, or government sponsored programs or
programs provided by educational and health organizations providing programs and support for CLC
participants in collaboration with the CLC or Library.
Reservation Procedure:Designated areas of the Community Learning Center (CLC) are available for
reservation based on staffing availability. Reservations may be madeup to two (2) months and no less
than two (2) weeks in advanceof the event date through the submission of a paperor electronic
application. The electronic application is available at www.ssf.net/libraryunder Reservations.
Applications will be accepted from the same organizationto scheduleup to six (6)programsper
calendar year. Depending on the nature of the program, proof of personal and property liability
insurance may be required.
Scheduling priority will be given to Library and City programs. While every effort will be made to follow
the schedule, there may be times when a reservation may have to be cancelled.
Space use:The use of space is limited to the areas reserved on the application permitand the public
restrooms, all other areas are restricted for staff use. Attendance is limited to the room capacity
indicated next to each room on the application form and should be monitored by reserving party to
ensure room capacity is not exceeded.
Set-up and Clean-up:Each group is responsible for room set-up and for returning the room to the
condition in which it was found, following the instructions in the Clean Up Guide.
Children:Groups that involve children must have adults present in a ratio of 1 to 10 to assure proper
supervision and safety. Staff supervising children must be oriented and trained on the Community
Learning Center’s Creative Center rules, material use and emergency evacuation procedures. Please
monitor children for noise level particularly in the areas adjacent to staff working areas.
Smoking and Alcohol use:Neither smoking nor the consumption of alcohol is allowed in the
Community Learning Center.
Publicity:The use of the Community Learning Center shall not be publicized in such a way as to imply
librarysponsorship of the group’s activities, except when stated in acontract oragreement letter. The
name, address, and phone number of the Community Learning Center may notbe used as the official
address or headquarters of any group using it.
Noise:Please keep noise to a minimum in the hallways as loud talking can disrupt the working staff
environment.
Parking:Not included as part of the application. However, there is some parking available on the
streets.
Granting permission to use the Community Learning Center does not constitute an endorsement of the
programs or organizations by the Library, or City of South San Francisco.
