You are invited to offer your suggestions. In order that you may know our method of conducting Library
business, we proceed as follows:
The regular meetings of the Library Board of Trustees are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at
6:00 PMin the Main Library, Auditorium, 840 West Orange Avenue
,South San Francisco, California.
Public Comment: For those wishing to address the Board of Trustees on any Agenda or non-Agendized item,
please complete a Speaker Card available from the Main Library and submit it to the Library's Administrative
Assistant. Please be sure to indicate the Agenda Item # you wish to address or the topic of your public
comment. California law prevents the Board of Trustees from taking action on any item noton the Agenda
(except in emergency circumstances). Your question or problem may be referred to staff for investigation or
action (or both) where appropriate or the matter may be placed on a future Agenda for more comprehensive
action or a report. When your name is called, please state your name and address(optional) for the Minutes.
COMMENTS ARE LIMITED TO THREE (3) MINUTES PER SPEAKER. Thank you for your cooperation.
The Library Board President will read successively the items of business appearing on the Agenda. As she
completes reading an item, it willbe ready for Board discussion or action.

CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 4:30P.M. in the Main Library.
ATTENDANCE
Library Trustees present: Diane Huddleston, Cisca Hansen,Valerie Lambertson,Pat FitzPatrick,
and Robert Turnberg.Library staff present: Valerie Sommer,Library Director;Adam Elsholz,
Assistant Library Director;and Elia Moreno,Administrative AssistantII.Guest: Steven Yee.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes of the regular April24,2018meeting were approved as presented.
PUBLIC COMMENTS
None.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT
The Board reviewed the Director’s Report.Theearly voting center/ ballot drop off will be open
through Memorial Day. The Citizen’s Academy Library/ I.T. session was a greatsuccess;
citizens enjoyed engaging hands on with the 3D printers, robots, downloadable videos and
audiobooks, etc.

Library Openings and RecruitmentUpdates

Due to the change in time for the May 22Library Board of Trustees meeting, part –time
Literacy Services Coordinator, Paul Buckley will be presented at the next Library Board of

Trustees meetingon June 26. The recruitment for the full -time Literacy Services Coordinator
is soon to be completed;offer to the candidate is expected to be made soon.The Library is in the
queueat the Human Resources Departmentfor two Librarian II positions.
Community Civic Campus Project Update

SmithGroupJJR, will be attendingtheJune 13City Council meeting, where they will be
presentingpreliminary design ideas. The board members revieweda handoutwhich listedallof
the focus groups from the variousCommunity Civic Campus meeting, which also include the

previous Library Board Meeting of March 27and the South San Francisco Friends of the
Library meeting.
NEW BUSINESS
Discussion and Motion to Amend the Community Learning Center Room Use Policy
The Board membersreviewed the Community Learning Center Room Use Policy. The
application for room use now asks if the applicant is from a non-profit organization. A motion to
amend the policy was made, seconded and approved.

The Youth Services Summer Learning Challengewill begin June 1. The first Summer Learning

Molloy’s Chili Cook-off Fundraiser benefitting the Community Learning Center will be Sunday,

June 3from 12:00 –4 :00 PM.

Housing conversation led by San Mateo County Home forAll Initiative will be held on June 12
beginning at6:00 PM.
GOOD AND WELFARE
Valerie Lambertson recommends a new book –Our Towns: A 100,000 Mile Journey into the
Heart of Americaby Deborah and James Fallows.
