business, we proceed as follows:
The regular meetings of the Library Board of Trustees are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at
6:00 PMin the Main Library, Auditorium, 840 West Orange Avenue,South San Francisco, California.
Public Comment
: For those wishing to address the Board of Trustees on any Agenda or non-Agendized item,
please complete a Speaker Card available from the Main Library and submit it to the Library's Administrative
Assistant. Please be sure to indicate the Agenda Item # you wish to address or the topic of your public comment.
California law prevents the Board of Trustees from taking action on any item noton the Agenda (except in
emergency circumstances). Your question or problem may be referred to staff for investigation or action (or
both) where appropriate or the matter may be placed on a future Agenda for more comprehensive action or a
report. When your name is called, please state your name and address (optional) for the Minutes. COMMENTS
ARE LIMITED TO THREE (3) MINUTES PER SPEAKER. Thank you for your cooperation.
The Library Board President will read successively the items of business appearing on the Agenda. As she
completes reading an item, it will be ready for Board discussion or action.

CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 6:00P.M. in the Main Library.
ATTENDANCE
Library Trustees present: Diane Huddleston, Cisca Hansen,Valerie Lambertson,Pat FitzPatrick,
and Robert Turnberg.Library staff present: Valerie Sommer, Library Director;Elia Moreno,
Administrative AssistantII;Shawnte Santos, Patron Services Program Manager;Karla Bourdon,
Literacy Program Manager; and Katherine Blandon-Escobar,Literacy Services Coordinator.
Guest: Kumkum Gupta.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes of the regular June26,2018meeting were approved as presented.
PUBLIC COMMENTS

Kumkum Gupta attended the Walgreens presentation on Sunday, July 15;thepresentation was
focused on learning about skincare for seniors.Approximately15 to 20 patrons attended.The
Walgreens representative had a lot of useful information and also shared links to other helpful
facts about skincare.

Library Openings and RecruitmentUpdates
There are currently three vacant Librarian positionsopen.Staff is considering recruiting one of
the positionsat a Supervising Library Specialist level.
Community Civic Campus Project Update

At the July 13City Council Study Session, City Council added and approved an additional
5,000 square feet to the NewMain Library footprintto provide space for quiet reading, studying,
working and learning. This brings the new space to approximately39,000 gross square feet. A
th
presentation by the master architect, JJRSmithGroup, will be given at the July 25Regular City
Council meeting as an update on the planningof the Community Civic Campus.There will be a

schematic design kickoff and preliminary planning meeting for City, architect and construction

manager staffon August 2.
NEW BUSINESS
New Employee Introduction: Katherine Blandon-Escobar, Literacy Services Coordinator
Katherine Blandon-Escobarwas introduced as the new Literacy Services Coordinatorat the
Community Learning Center.Katherine is in charge of projectsin the areas of volunteerism,
diversity and inclusion and will provide overall support for CLC programs, services and projects.
Katherine comes with a background of senior care atOn Lok and domestic violence victimsat
Casa de Las Madres. She is currently working on a storytelling project for the Voices of Our
st
Community LSTA grant eventat the CLC, whichwill takeplace on Tuesday, July 31.
Homelessness and Mental Illness Training Presentation
Patron Services Manager, Shawnte Santos presented an overview of homelessnessand mental
illness staff trainings. The purpose of the trainings is to refresh staff members on how to interact
with patrons who are homelessor marginally housed, as well as patrons whomay have mental
illnesses.The trainings have been divided intothree parts, focusingon employee safety, methods
in approaching patrons, and reminders and talking points around sensitivityand empathywhen
interacting with patrons. In addition,techniques on being firm and courteous when relaying
library policies werediscussed.
Current and Pending Grant Opportunities
Library Director, Valerie Sommer, relayedcurrent and pending grant opportunities for the
Library. The list of grant opportunitiesincludes:Microsoft’s Limitless Libraries grant that offers
virtual reality equipment for libraries and schools; San Mateo County grant for STEM
programming at the Community Learning Center; Minecraft grant that focuses on teaching cyber
security for teens and tweens; Sares Regis grant for morechildren’sinteractive learningtools
and STEM supplies; California Revealed History project grant from the State Library to assess
our historical collection; materials grant from the California State Library to purchase bilingual
materials; and anothermaterials grant opportunity that offersa wide range of materials selection
optionsto support the needs ofpatrons over 50, STEM programming, high interest and low
reading level, special needs, workforce development, veterans, immigrants, refugees and cultural
diversity.

The Summer Learning Challenge is coming to an end. Their last program will be the Sterling

Johnson Bubble Show on Saturday, August 4, 12:30 P.M. in the Main Library and 2:30 P.M. at
Grand Avenue Library.

Diane Huddleston is really enjoyingthe Library’s new video streaming service, Kanopy.
Thank you to Valerie Lambertson for her years of service to the Library Board. It has been a
great pleasure andshe will be greatly missed.
